LeBron James Spent Kobe Bryant's Memorial 'In His Own Space'

Feb 26, 2020 11:57 AM

LeBron James was evasive when asked whether he attended the memorial for Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant at Staples Center.

"I respect your question, for sure, but it's very emotional. A very emotional day. A very tough day for myself, for my family, for everyone involved," James said. "One thing I can come out of it saying is how strong and how bold and how powerful Vanessa is. To stand up there the way she did, to give that speech the way she gave that speech. I commend her.

"My heart is with their family still. With his three daughters that are still here. With his wife. With his mom and dad and his sisters. It was just a very difficult day. Obviously a celebration, but it was a difficult day for all of us. So I appreciate it. If we could move on to tonight, that would be great."

James was not seen at the memorial.

James' agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith that it was an emotional day for James and that he spent the memorial "in his own space."

James was asked whether the memorial could provide some closure for himself and the Lakers.

"It's never a closure. It's never going to be a closure," James said. "I mean, we continue to live on his legacy and continue to have our hearts heavy with both sadness and with happiness for his family that are still here. So it's not a closure. But it was a celebration which was well received from not only the Laker faithful, not only the family here, but everybody around the world."

In the aftermath of Bryant's death, James told ESPN it was the "toughest week of my life."

Pistons Won't Buyout Derrick Rose After Rebuffing Trade Inquiries

Feb 24, 2020 11:57 AM

The Detroit Pistons rebuffed interest from the Los Angeles Lakers in trading for Derrick Rose. The Lakers have been seeking a perimeter scorer to round out their roster.

"No, there's no chance," said Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective Podcast in reply to a question on whether the Pistons might negotiate a buyout with Rose. "He's under contract for next year at a good number. From what I understand, when the Lakers called the Pistons and expressed an interest in trading for Derrick Rose, the Pistons said 'hey, we appreciate you calling, but we're not trading him. Dwane Casey likes him. We think he's going to be important for us next year.' He just wasn't available."

Rose signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Pistons this past offseason.

Lakers Evaluating Possibility Of Signing Dion Waiters

Feb 24, 2020 11:49 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers have some level of interest in signing Dion Waiters.

Waiters was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies after his trade from the Miami Heat.

"I don't know if Dion Waiters is an answer," said Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective podcast. "They're going to give Dion a look. They had a meeting with him last week. I expect they will have a workout with him in the short-term and see what kind of condition he's in. They're mulling it over and it's because they need some sort of perimeter player who can score a little bit."

Waiters was previously represented by Rob Pelinka and is now represented by Rich Paul.

"Dion doesn't just have to convince the Lakers. He has to convince LeBron (James)," said Windhorst.

The Lakers also have been linked with J.R. Smith.
