Abdul-Rauf's House Burned

Jul 31, 2001 1:11 AM

The Associated Press reports that the unoccupied Gulfport, Mississippi, home of former NBA player Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was destroyed by fire Monday.  Arson is suspected.  "I (once) said before I moved in, it would be burned down," Abdul-Rauf said. "This is just an indication, I think, of how far we've got to go in terms of human relations in this country." Abdul-Rauf came out of retirement to play with the Grizzlies last season.  Earlier in his career he was surrounded by controversy for refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem.

Erick Strickland on Hold

Jul 29, 2001 12:00 AM

Erick Strickland opted out of his 6-year contract this summer in hopes for getting himself into a better opportunity. He's still waiting for that opportunity to present itself.

The Grizzlies, who have relocated to Memphis, are among a handful of teams Strickland has been talking to this summer. He also worked out for Miami and has talked with Phoenix and Cleveland.

``I'm looking for a situation that fits the way I play the game,'' said Strickland, who averaged just 4.3 points in 28 games with the Grizzlies last season after being traded from the Knicks.

Grizzlies: Trouble at the Two Position

Jul 24, 2001 2:55 AM

Ron Higgins reviews the options the Grizzlies have at the shooting guard position.  "All this position lacks is the host of 'The Weakest Link' pointing at projected starter Michael Dickerson and saying, 'You are the weakest link. Goodbye.' "  He suggests Shane Battier and (gulp) Jason Williams are more likely to pick up the slack behind Dickerson than Nick Anderson.

Grizzlies Not Interested in Penny

Jul 21, 2001 2:31 AM

Memphis GM Billy Knight said there is no truth to the rumor that the Grizzlies are discussing a deal that would send Michael Dickerson and Bryant Reeves to Phoenix in exchange for Penny Hardaway.  "We are not involved in any conversations with the Suns and we haven't talked to them since before the draft," Knight said. "And that conversation was about draft choices."

Grizzlies Waiting for Gasol

Jul 19, 2001 3:41 AM

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that #3 pick Pau Gasol has not negotiated a buyout with his Barcelona team yet.  "He's talking with his European team about his contract," Grizzlies general manager Billy Knight said Wednesday. "I know they talked Monday, Tuesday and (Wednesday).  We hope we can get him in Utah, but I understand that it's a big buyout, a lot of money."

The trade that brought Gasol to Memphis along with Lorenzen Wright and Brevin Knight for Shareef Abdur-Rahim was finalized Wednesday.  Wright and Knight were introduced at a press conference, where Wright expressed his delight at returning home.
