Wallace Had No Role In Trade As Hollinger Takes Bigger Role In Grizzlies' Front Office

Jan 31, 2013 10:38 AM

The Memphis Grizzlies have completed two cost-saving trades over the past few weeks, with their trade of Rudy Gay being the most notable.

Chris Wallace, a holdover from the previous ownership, had nothing to do with the trade.

New Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien is operating largely based on the recommendations of statistician and former media member John Hollinger.

The San Antonio Spurs formerly had Hollinger on their payroll as a consultant and regretfully took his advice to sign Jackie Butler. The Spurs atoned for the mistake by trading away the draft rights to Luis Scola, along with Butler.

Grizzlies' Front Office Didn't Reach Out To Rudy Gay Following Trade

Jan 31, 2013 1:03 AM

Rudy Gay was gracious toward the Memphis Grizzlies following his trade to the Toronto Raptors, but was surprised not to hear directly from anyone within the front office.

"I guess its time to move on," Gay said. "To my teammates and fans, thank you."

Gay didn't receive a phone call from CEO Jason Levien, or any of the new members of the management team.

“I can’t even get a phone call?”

Gay had been with the Grizzlies since his rookie season in 06-07.

“It was good. I can’t really complain about what happened when I was here. I was happy to see the team progress.”

Gay was not described as sounding angry during the conversation.

Colangelo Was Torn Between Bargnani, Gay On Draft Night

Jan 30, 2013 1:11 PM

The Toronto Raptors continue to pursue a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies for Rudy Gay.

The Raptors held the first overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft and selected Andrea Bargnani, passing over Rudy Gay, amongst others.

"Bryan Colangelo has loved Gay since his college days," writes Chad Ford. "He was seriously torn between Gay and Bargnani on draft night. I think he feels like if he unites them, the Raptors instantly get better."

Chris Johnson Used D-League Showcase To Earn Spot With Grizzlies

Jan 30, 2013 10:29 AM

Chris Johnson's 10-day contract with the Memphis Grizzlies expires on Friday.

The Grizzlies can sign him to a second 10-day contract or for the remainder of the season.

"I root for these between-the-crack guys," general manager Chris Wallace said. "He's a confident guy without being overbearing about it. He's been a seamless fit. Hopefully, he can keep it up."

Wallace and vice president of basketball operations John Hollinger were impressed by Johnson last month at the D-League showcase. Wallace subsequently saw Johnson again during a D-League trip to Reno where the intention was to watch Tony Wroten.

"I figured why not go to the D-League and play for a chance to get a call-up?" said Johnson, a four-year college player at Dayton. "Once you sign that contract overseas, you're over there for a year. In the D-League, NBA scouts come check you out and look to potentially call you up. I'm grateful that the Griz did and just threw me out there. I'm trying to make the best of this opportunity."

Raptors Discussing Trade For Rudy Gay With Grizzlies

Jan 28, 2013 8:18 PM

The Toronto Raptors are active in trade talks with the Memphis Grizzlies for Rudy Gay, according to sources.

The Raptors are believed to be the team most serious for Gay.

The framework of a workable trade has not been established.

Sources say the Raptors have made Jose Calderon and Ed Davis as the core of a trade offer for Gay.

Sources also believe that a trade involving the Raptors and Grizzlies could expand to other teams.

The Grizzlies are motivated to trade Gay due financial concerns even though they made a cap-friendly trade last week with the CAvaliers.
