Vince Carter Plans To Play Next Season, No Retirement In Sight

Apr 29, 2017 7:56 PM

Vince Carter plans on continuing his career next season. Carter has had remarkable longevity, evolving into one of the game's better veteran wing role players.

Carter will be a free agent this summer.

"I said to myself 'I want to play 15 years'. I don't know where I got that from. And the I got to 15 years and I kept going. I never capped it, but at the same time I've had a lot of players remind me of things I've said," said Carter about how he kept telling fellow players he would retire after two more years.

"I'm still saying 'two more years and I'm done.'

"I sit here today and I think of when I was younger, at that 25 and the season was over, I felt awful.

"I could play three more rounds of basketball right now."

David Fizdale Fined $30,000 By NBA For Game 2 Comments

Apr 19, 2017 11:34 AM

David Fizdale has received a $30,000 fine by the NBA for criticizing game officials after Game 2.

"We don't get the respect that these guys deserve because Mike Conley doesn't go crazy. He has class, and he just plays the game," Fizdale said during his press conference. "But I'm not gonna let them treat us that way. I know Pop's got pedigree, and I'm a young rookie. But they're not gonna rook us. That's unacceptable. That was unprofessional. Our guys dug in that game and earned the right to be in that game. And they did not even give us a chance."

Fizdale closed the press conference by yelling "Take that for data."

The Memphis Grizzlies are down 0-2 against the San Antonio Spurs.

David Fizdale Calls Game 2 Referees 'Unacceptable, Unprofessional'

Apr 18, 2017 10:38 AM

David Fizdale was critical of the Game 2 referees after the Memphis Grizzlies were unable to complete a 19-point comeback in the second half.

"It's unfortunate that I've got a guy like [point guard] Mike Conley that in his whole career has got zero technical fouls and just cannot seem to get the proper respect from the officials that he deserves," Fizdale said. "It was a very poorly officiated basketball game."

Kawhi Leonard attempted more free throws than the entire Memphis squad (13-of-15). San Antonio as a team connected on 31 of 32 from the free throw line.

"Zach Randolph, the most rugged guy in the game, had zero free throws," Fizdale said as he stared down at the box score from Monday's game. "But somehow, Kawhi Leonard had 19 free throws. First half, we shot 19 shots in the paint, and we had six free throws. They shot 11 times in the paint, and they had 23 free throws. I'm not a numbers guy, but that doesn't seem to add up. Overall, 35 times we shot the ball in the paint. We had 15 free throws for the game. They shot 18 times in the paint and had 32 free throws. Kawhi shot more free throws than our whole team. Explain it to me."

The Grizzlies were called for 22 fouls compared to 13 for the Spurs.

"We don't get the respect that these guys deserve because Mike Conley doesn't go crazy. He has class, and he just plays the game," Fizdale said. "But I'm not gonna let them treat us that way. I know Pop's got pedigree, and I'm a young rookie. But they're not gonna rook us. That's unacceptable. That was unprofessional. Our guys dug in that game and earned the right to be in that game. And they did not even give us a chance."

As Fizdale finished his thought, he slammed a pen to the table and stood up.

"Take that for data," he said.

Grizzlies Call JaMychal Green 'Fantastic Complement' To Core

Apr 4, 2017 10:43 PM

JaMychal Green will be a restricted free agent this offseason and the Memphis Grizzlies figure to receive significant competition for him.

“JaMychal’s growth and development as a player has been huge for us,” David Fizdale told The Vertical. “I’ve actually held JaMychal back a little bit, because I feel he has some ability to score more. Finding him some touches can be tough because of all the options we have, but he’s been invaluable.

“His ability to make open threes, defend multiple positions, loyal, being tough. He’s diligent about being in shape and working on his game, a fantastic complement to our group.”

Green has complemented Marc Gasol very well in the starting lineup.

“It’s a blessing that Marc supported me and helped my confidence,” Green told The Vertical. “It makes me play harder and believe in myself more to have a vet like that, a possible Hall of Famer, vouch for you. That’s big for me. I just spread out and give Marc room to work in the post. If I see him double-teamed, I pick my spots to cut. I stay around the 3-point line to give Marc the space he needs.

“Defensively, I want to go hard and try to live by our principles: no middle, no getting beat off the dribble, and – if I do know Marc is behind me – to alter the shot. I know I got the big fella behind me.”
