Steve Mills: I Don't Know I Would Have Signed Joakim Noah If It Were Just My Decision

Dec 21, 2018 5:50 PM

Steve Mills suggested signing Joakim Noah to a four-year, $72 million contract during the 2016 offseason wasn't something he was not in favor of as general manager under Phil Jackson.

Noah recently gave an interview in which he blamed partying too much in New York for one of the reasons his tenure with the team lasted one and a half seasons.

“Obviously I’m disappointed it worked out the way it worked out," said Mills. "I don’t know that. Had it been just my decision I don’t know that I would have signed him. There was a reason why we thought that this was the best thing for the culture and the environment of our team. When the speculation was why don’t we handle Joakim one way and we decided to handle it a different way, there was a reason why we handled it the way we decided to handle it.”

Chris Wallace: Grizzlies Were 'Very Clear' About Who Was In Failed Trade

Dec 16, 2018 2:14 AM

In the fallout from the failed three-team trade involving the Phoenix Suns and Washington Wizards, Memphis Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace reiterated that he was "very clear" about which player with the last name Brooks he was willing to deal.

The Suns thought they would receive the 22-year-old Dillon Brooks from Memphis. Wallace wanted to trade the 29-year-od MarShon Brooks instead.

The confusion lead to the deal getting called off, although the Wizards and the Suns would complete a similar deal centered around Trevor Ariza and Kelly Oubre without a third team.

Wallace said "what happened last night was unfathomable. I've never experienced this before...[the failed agreement] forced me to do something I've never done in 30-plus years working in this league with seven teams, is to drag two players out of a locker room and tell them they've been traded and then eventually have to come back and tell them, 'Oh, no, you haven't been traded".

Suns officials said they talked directly to the Grizzlies about Dillon Brooks, while Grizzlies officials said the deal was negotiated through Wizards general manager Ernie Grunfeld.

Suns Trade Trevor Ariza To Wizards For Kelly Oubre, Austin Rivers

Dec 15, 2018 12:30 PM

The Phoenix Suns have agreed to trade Trevor Ariza to the Washington Wizards for Kelly Oubre and Austin Rivers.

The deal was reworked after the Suns and Memphis Grizzlies disagreed on the inclusion of either MarShon Brooks or Dillon Brooks.

Ariza signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Suns during the offseason and became trade-eligible on Saturday.

Ariza and his agent, Aaron Mintz of CAA, had hoped that the Los Angeles Lakers could complete a deal with the Suns. Robert Sarver became more sensitive about trading Ariza to the Lakers following the criticism the Suns received after buying out Chandler to allow him to join the Lakers.

The Wizards weren't expecting to have enough flexibility to re-sign Oubre in restricted free agency.

Joakim Noah Admits He Partied Too Much In New York

Dec 14, 2018 11:18 AM

Joakim Noah spent two seasons with the New York Knicks after signing a four-year, $72 million deal.

Noah now admits that he wasn't quite mature enough to handle living in New York.

"I'm too lit to play in New York City," Noah said on The Chris Vernon Show. "I was too lit. Memphis is perfect for me. Chicago was lit, too, but I was younger. You can recover faster."

Noah signed with the Memphis Grizzlies several weeks after his buyout with the Knicks.

Noah's tenure with the Knicks ended following an altercation with Jeff Hornacek.

"It happened so fast," Noah said. "One year I'm playing 35 minutes a game. And then injuries started piling up. I got this crazy deal with the Knicks, and then the next thing you know I'm not playing anymore. Get kicked off the team. It was a crazy time. I wasn't sure I was gonna get an opportunity to play again."

Noah remained in New York and continued to party before deciding to head to Malibu to rededicate himself to playing again.

"When I got kicked off the team, it was New York Fashion Week," Noah said. "I was getting paid a lot of money and I had no direction. I really had to make a decision of how I wanted to live my life. If I kept going in the direction I was going in and stayed in New York, then I probably wouldn't be here right now."

Joakim Noah: I'm Here Because I Love To Play Basketball

Dec 6, 2018 9:16 AM

Joakim Noah signed a one-year deal with the Memphis Grizzlies because he rediscovered his love for the game.

"I just got here like two days ago," Noah said. "I thought that he would wait at least until I knew the plays. I’m just happy that coach believes in me, put me in the game like that. It means a lot to me. With that said, I’m taking none of these moments for granted. Because all this time made me realize how much I love basketball.”

Noah received a buyout from the New York Knicks.

“I’m here alone," Noah said. "I left my family behind. I’m here because I love to play basketball. It wasn’t because of money. It wasn’t because of any of those things. It was because I want to play basketball and I want to be with a good group.

"I’m cherishing all these moments.”
