Mourning Says This Is Last Season

Oct 31, 2007 8:13 AM

Alonzo Mourning will play his final season opener Thursday when the Heat faces Detroit at American Airlines Arena. Mourning, whose birthday is Feb. 8, will be 38 when he wraps up what many consider a Hall of Fame career.

"I think I've contributed enough to this game where I should be considered," Mourning said. "But I have no power over that. I'll put it in God's hands. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. If not, I don't think I had a wasted career because I don't go into the Hall of Fame."

Despite missing almost four full seasons because of health issues, including a kidney transplant in December 2003, Mourning ranks among the game's all-time best centers.

Wade Happy To Have Davis In Miami

Oct 27, 2007 10:33 AM

Finally, Dwyane Wade has a healthy, athletic and versatile swingman as a running partner.

Wade played with Caron Butler, but it wasn't the high-flying swingman on display with the Wizards because Butler struggled with injuries during Wade's rookie season with the Heat in 2003-04. Eddie Jones was a steady pro, but his All-Star days were behind him when Wade came along.

So Wade said he's excited about Ricky Davis joining the Heat because "this will be the first time I really get to get someone in their prime."

"It was a good move," Wade said of the deal that brought Davis and center Mark Blount from Minnesota to the Heat.

Walker Relieved To Join Timberwolves

Oct 27, 2007 12:58 AM

After arriving in Minnesota, Antoine Walker sounded relieved with his fresh start ? even if contending for a playoff spot with the Timberwolves looks like a huge long shot.

Though Walker said he had a good time in Miami, he voiced his frustration Friday that coach Pat Riley went public with his criticism of Walker's weight.

"He has numbers, no matter who you are. We get weighed and body fat every week. If you're not on your number, he believes you're not in shape," Walker said during his first appearance since being shipped to Minnesota with two other players and a first-round draft pick in exchange for Ricky Davis and Mark Blount.

"They were coach's rules since he got there," Walker said. "Everybody goes through it. Why it went public that I didn't make my number, I don't know."

Davis An Instant Starter For Heat

Oct 25, 2007 8:02 PM

After watching the Miami Heat sputter offensively in the preseason, Pat Riley realized his team was in desperate need of perimeter help.

He's counting on newly acquired Ricky Davis to provide an immediate boost.

Davis will slide into the injured Dwyane Wade's spot at starting shooting guard when the Heat open the regular season next week, Riley said Thursday, one day after the Heat pulled off a five-player trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Miami sent Antoine Walker, Michael Doleac and Wayne Simien to the Timberwolves, along with a conditional first-round draft pick for Davis and Mark Blount.

"The securing of a perimeter player who could score, who could shoot, who had experience as a starter transcended all other needs. And that's why we did it," Riley said. "The preseason showed we didn't have what we needed presently at that position, even though I think we have players who can help us."

Miami Could Have $21 Million In Expiring Contracts Next Summer

Oct 25, 2007 11:41 AM

The Heat, in excess of the league's $67.9 million luxury tax, traded $12.6 million in 2007-08 salary in the deal and took back $13.5 million owed to Ricky Davis and Mark Blount this season. Davis has one season left on his contract for $6.8 million. Blount has three seasons and $21.9 million left on his contract.

The Heat could have as much as $21 million in expiring contracts next summer, making it a potential bidder for a 2008 free agents crop that could include Gilbert Arenas, Ron Artest, Corey Maggette, Elton Brand, Baron Davis and Jermaine O'Neal.
