Erik Spoelstra To Sign Extension With Heat

Sep 30, 2013 10:07 AM

Erik Spoelstra and the Miami Heat are finalizing a multiyear contract extension, according to sources.

Spoelstra likely staved off a bidding war next summer by choosing to re-sign with the only franchise he's ever known.

Spoelstra's new deal is expected to be made official ahead of the start of Heat camp this week.

Spoelstra, 42, is 260-134 (.660) in five seasons as Miami's coach, including three straight trips to the NBA Finals and two titles. He's 50-29 (.633) in five trips to the postseason.

LeBron Says He Would Have Played At Ohio State If He Attended College

Sep 30, 2013 11:29 AM

LeBron James led the Ohio State football team into the pep rally on Saturday and Urban Meyer introduced the Miami Heat's star to mostly cheers.

Speaking to students at the rally, James said he would have played at Ohio State University if he decided to play one season of college basketball instead of entering the NBA straight out of high school in 2003.

"I promise, I say this all the time -- if I had one year of college, I would have ended up here," James said. "No matter where I go in the world, no matter where it is, I will always rock Ohio State colors."

Earlier this month, Ohio State unveiled a special locker dedicated to James inside the Schottenstein Center, where the basketball team plays its home games.

With speculation that LeBron James could return to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, but he admitted to enjoying the weather in Miami.

“I miss the slower pace back home but have grown used to my new city’s little perks like fresh fish and sweet fruit,” said James. “It will definitely be someplace warm. I don’t want to go back to cold winters.”

The Los Angeles Lakers also could have enough cap space to sign James, though even those within the franchise believe it is a longshot.

NBA Considering Nickname Jerseys For Heat, Nets

Sep 23, 2013 9:55 PM

Some members of the Miami Heat organization have been told the NBA is considering allowing them and the Brooklyn Nets to wear jerseys with nicknames in at least one of the teams' four matchups next season.

The NBA has not announced the plan, but teams apparently have been aware of the likelihood of it happening for at least several weeks. Players were asked to submit which names they would like on these potential jerseys.

"It shows growth in our league and it shows we do adapt to what's going on around us," said Allen, the Heat guard who plans to wear Shuttlesworth on his jersey, a nod to his character from the "He Got Game" film. "And we're still kids, playing a kids' game. Even though we're now men playing a kids' game, we still remember where we come from. Everybody had a nickname and it's a way to let the fans in a little bit more."

Four-time NBA MVP LeBron James is expected to wear "King James." Heat guard Dwyane Wade would have any number of nicknames to choose from, with "Three" — both his jersey number and championship-ring total — being his current favorite. Shane Battier said he'll go with "Shaneo."

Brooklyn forward Paul Pierce has been called "The Truth" for many years, and fellow new Nets forward Kevin Garnett has long been known by his initials.

"Fans will like it and so will a lot of the players," Allen said. "Guys will get a good kick out of it."
