Heat Expected To Pursue Trade Of Hassan Whiteside

Apr 25, 2018 4:25 PM

The Miami Heat are expected to pursue a trade of Hassan Whiteside this offseason.

Whiteside is due $24.4 million and $27.1 million in the final two years of his contract.

"It's been a long year, man, up and downs, up and downs," he said.

Whiteside has talked openly about his frustrations with playing time.

"Not being out there,” he said. “Not being out there. At least give me a chance to fight. At least give me a chance to fight. I can understand if I was playing 30 minutes and I played bad. At least give me a chance."

He said: “We played a style of play Coach wanted. He wanted to utilize more spacing I guess in the playoffs, so that's why he did it."

Hassan Whiteside Laments Lack Of Involvement In Miami Offense

Apr 20, 2018 5:05 PM

Hassan Whiteside complained about Miami's offensive approach and hot it has impacted his production.

"It's just different, man. I feel like our offense is a lot different. I'm not as involved in as many dribble handoffs as I was and post-ups as I was in the regular season," Whiteside said. "That's what coach [Erik Spoelstra] wants. Coach wants me to just be in the corner and set picks. That's what he wants. I've just got to trust it."

Whiteside is averaging just 3.7 points in 13 minutes per game during the first three games of the playoffs.

"I want to get more rebounds out there. I want to get more minutes out there. I'm just going to keep trusting coach's decision-making," Whiteside said. "Even with the fouls, I still could have been out there. I wouldn't have fouled out. I am going to keep trusting coach's decision-making."

Earlier this season, Whiteside was fined an undisclosed amount by the Heat for "comments detrimental to the team" in response to his remarks expressing frustration over a diminished role.

LeBron James Asked Pat Riley To Return To Coaching In 2010

Apr 9, 2018 3:54 PM

Ian Thomsen's new book, "The Soul of Basketball: The Epic Showdown between LeBron, Kobe, Doc and Dirk that Saved the NBA", outlines a situation in 2010 when LeBron James asked Pat Riley if he had interest in coaching again.

During an early season loss, James bumped Erik Spoelstra as he walked toward the bench during a timeout. The Heat had lost four out of five games and Riley called James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade into his office for a meeting.

“They just said, ‘We’re not feeling it,’ or something like that,” Riley said. “We talked about the typical things that we have to do, have patience and all of that stuff.

“And I remember LeBron looking at me, and he said, ‘Don’t you ever get the itch?’ I said, ‘The itch for what?’ He said, ‘The itch to coach again?’ I said, ‘No, I don’t have the itch.’ He didn’t ask any more questions, and I didn’t offer any more answers. But I know what it meant, and I always go back and wonder about what he was thinking at that time. He walked out scratching his leg like it was itching.”

Riley revealed that similar questions were also raised during Miami's 2010 recruiting pitch to James.

"They wanted to know what was going to happen with Erik," Riley said. "They wondered if I was going to be coaching. I said, 'Look, Erik is the head coach, that's it. I support him. I'm not interested in coaching.'

"The thought was in their mind at times that maybe I would come back and coach, I think. But I was truly done, I didn't want to get back into it, and Erik is a hell of a coach. He was coming off two good playoff years, but he had not been coaching three superstars. And then with the whole LeBron effect, it would have been a tough transition for any head coach with two years of experience."

Heat Give Body Fat Tests To Players Twice Per Week

Apr 5, 2018 10:12 AM

The Miami Heat administer body fat tests to their players twice per week in which they must pass the maximum nine percent body fat threshold.

When Dwyane Wade returned to the Heat, he was at the bottom of the list in terms of body fat percentage.

Seven weeks later, Wade's body fat percentage dropped to the middle of the list.

The Heat have become well-known for players getting into the best shape of their career within their program.

“We’re not for everyone," said Erik Spoelstra.

Apr 5, 2018 10:06 AM

Dwyane Wade left the Miami Heat in 2016 to sign with the Chicago Bulls, briefly played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and returned to the franchise that drafted him at the 2018 trade deadline.

Wade was given the opportunity by the Cavaliers to decide whether he wanted to return to the Heat, or take a reduced role with Cleveland.

“It was easy,” he tells SB Nation. “It was an easy decision.”

Since returning to the Heat, Wade has averaged 12.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 22.6 minutes per game.
