Ersan Ilyasova Diagnosed With Concussion

Dec 28, 2014 11:11 AM

Ersan Ilyasova suffered a concussion in his first game back from a nasal fracture that cost him nine games and required surgery.

Ilyasova suffered the injury after colliding with teammate Zaza Pachulia in the Bucks' home loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Dec. 23 and didn't make the trip with Milwaukee in its victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Friday.

"This had nothing to do with the broken nose," said coach Jason Kidd of Ilyasova, who scored four points in 16 minutes in that Hornets game. "He's feeling a little bit better. We'll see how he feels tomorrow.

"Hopefully he can do a little something, but we're still thinking he's going to be out for a couple more days."

Bucks Use Facial Coding Expert To Gain Edge In Roster Decisions

Dec 26, 2014 10:21 AM

The Milwaukee Bucks hired Dan Hill, a facial coding expert who reads the faces of college prospects and NBA players to determine if they have the right emotional attributes to help the team.

“We spend quite a bit of time evaluating the players as basketball players and analytically,” said David Morway, Milwaukee’s assistant general manager, who works for the owners Wesley Edens and Marc Lasry. “But the difficult piece of the puzzle is the psychological side of it, and not only psychological, character and personality issues, but also team chemistry issues.”

Hill contends that faces betray our true emotions and can predict intentions, decisions and actions. He employs the psychologist Paul Ekman’s widely accepted FACS, or Facial Action Coding System, to decipher which of the 43 muscles in the face are working at any moment. Seven core emotions are identified: happiness, surprise, contempt, disgust, sadness, anger and fear.

The Bucks selected Jabari Parker second overall, while also considering Dante Exum.

“Nothing against Exum, but emotional resiliency, stability and an immediate, assured presence were all key considerations in support of selecting Parker,” Hill said.

Jabari Parker crumpled to the floor with a left knee injury and had to be carried to the locker room in the Milwaukee Bucks' win over the Phoenix Suns.

The injury occurred with 10:54 left in the third quarter as Parker drove in transition. His knee buckled before contact with P.J. Tucker and a double foul was called on the play.

Parker tried to get off the floor but could not.

The Bucks termed the injury a sprained left knee and said he would not return to the game. More tests will be performed to determine the extent of the injury.

Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins Named Rookies Of The Month For November

Dec 3, 2014 7:09 PM

Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins have been named the NBA's Rookies of the Month for November.

Parker helped lead the Bucks to a 10-8 mark during October/November by averaging 11.9 points (T-1st among rookies), 6.1 rebounds (2nd), 1.7 assists (7th) and 1.33 steals (2nd) per game. He began his career by posting double-doubles in two of his first three games (11 points and 10 rebounds on Oct. 31 vs. Philadelphia, and 13 points and 11 rebounds on Nov. 1 at Washington). In doing so, Parker became just the 14th player in the last 30 seasons to record multiple double-doubles within his first three career games, and the only teenager to accomplish the feat.

Wiggins averaged 11.6 points (2nd among NBA rookies), 3.7 rebounds and 1.13 steals in 15 games, all starts. He led all rookies in three-point field goal percentage at 44.0 percent (11-for-25). Among Western Conference rookies, Wiggins was 1st in scoring, steals and minutes played, 2nd in blocks and 3rd in rebounding.

Mavericks' Front Office Wanted Giannis Antetokounmpo At No. 13 Before Cuban Decided To Trade Pick

Dec 3, 2014 6:20 PM

Donnie Nelson wanted the Dallas Mavericks to select Giannis Antetokounmpo with the No. 13 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.

Mark Cuban elected to go with a plan that the Mavericks had set in place and passed on Antetokounmpo with the 13th pick, which they eventually traded down to the 18th pick and, where they got Shane Larkin.

“He’s making us look bad for sticking to our plan,” Cuban said Tuesday. “That was Donnie. That (taking Antetokounmpo) is what Donnie wanted to do and I said we should stick to the plan. The whole point was that I wanted to stick to the plan and Donnie was like, this guy’s going to be good. I’ll risk everything that he’s going to be good. I said, I believe you Donnie.

“But still, what if all of the sudden we find out that so-and-so (free agent) is dying to come to the Mavs and now you don’t have the cap room. That’s why we put together a plan and our consolation wasn’t too bad.”

Antetokounmpo is averaging 11.9 points and 5.9 rebounds this season. Larkin was eventually traded for the Mavericks to bring back Tyson Chandler last offseason.

“You play the game, you take your chances,” Cuban said. “It’s always in hindsight that you look good or bad. Let’s put it this way, everybody was saying our Jason Kidd trade was horrible until 2011. So you just don’t know."
