Nets keeping tabs on Garnett

Jul 31, 2002 8:03 AM

Ohm Youngmisuk of the Daily News reports that the Nets are inquiring about a big move next summer. Jason Kidd will be a free agent at that time and could be convinced to resign with the Nets if he had a superstar to play with. So, the Nets have inquired about Kevin Garnett. Shortly after Minnesota was bounced out of the first round for the sixth straight season, the Nets talked to the Timberwolves about Garnett's availability, according to several sources.

In Order acquire Garnett, the Nets would probably have to give up Keith Van Horn, Kerry Kittles and Kenyon Martin in order to come close to Garnett?s $25.2 million salary for next season. While sources say the Nets have discussed those three players internally, the Nets deny making an offer for Garnett.

Garnett is one of the top players in the game and the Timberwolves have always said that he is not for sale, but they will need to address his huge contract eventually. He currently has two years remaining in his $126 million contract. A four-year extension under the collective bargaining agreement could force the Timberwolves to pay Garnett an average of nearly $35 million a season.

One Western Conference GM said that Minnesota should consider moving Garnett since he takes up so much cap space and because the team hasn't made it out of the first round with him.

Davis, Cavs $20M apart in talks

Jul 24, 2002 8:45 AM

Chris Tomasson of the Beacon-Journal reports that the Cavaliers and free agent Ricky davis are not close to a deal. They are currently about 2 years and $20 million ?apart?.

Davis' brother, Alonge Davis, revealed Tuesday what each side wants. Alonge Davis also said Denver and Minnesota are the teams most actively pursuing the restricted free agent.

``Dan (Fegan, the agent for Ricky Davis) wants a minimum of $7 million a year for five or six years,'' Alonge Davis said. ``He figures that's the kind of money that Wesley Person was making before they cleared it for Ricky. The Cavaliers are offering an average of $5 million over three years.'' That means that Davis is looking for 5 years and about $35 million while the Cavaliers are offering 3 years and $15 million.

The Cavs are offering a contract close to the mid-class exception. Both Denver and Minnesota could offer approximately the same package with their own exceptions. As a restricted free agent, the Cavs will have the opportunity to match any offers for Davis.

``Ricky would love to stay in Cleveland, though,'' Alonge Davis said. ``I think (the two sides) will come to an agreement. (The Cavs) know how much the fans love Ricky, even more than Andre Miller. I don't see Paxson dragging it out.''

It's Not Easy To Deal Spree

Jul 21, 2002 8:13 AM

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports that Latrell Sprewell isn?t wanted in this league? at least by the Hawks and the Timberwolves. As recent trade rumors hovered around the Knicks and Sprewell, some of the other GM?s involved in the rumors are commenting about how they don?t want Latrell on their team.

Timberwolves president Kevin McHale told The Post he won't trade for Latrell Sprewell "because of his contract and other things," Hawks GM Pete Babcock piled on, indicating that acquiring the Knicks star was still a gamble and was something that has never been discussed. Babcock said. "It's unfair to compare players, but we went against our organizational standards to a degree with J. R. Rider a few years ago. We rolled the dice - we lost big-time on it. We would have to think very hard about bending again."

This may be an indication of how the league sees Sprewell: A risk who?ll be past his prime this season while making $13.5 million.

Knicks, Hawks, Talk Spree Swap

Jul 19, 2002 8:29 AM

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News gives us the latest version of the Sprewell trade rumor. The teams this time: New York, Atlanta and either Cleveland or Minnesota.

According to a league source, the Knicks are trying to recruit the Hawks to get involved in a trade for Latrell Sprewell, which will bring Cleveland's Andre Miller or Minnesota's Wally Szczerbiak to New York.

"They've been talking all summer about a deal," the source said.

Atlanta is trying to trade Jason Terry, but the Knicks will not take Terry, an undersized shooting guard, for Sprewell, their best player. Knicks GM Scot Layden seems determined to acquire Cleveland point guard Andre Miller. The Cavs, who are looking to deal Miller, would have little interest in Sprewell. They plan on resigning Ricky Davis and they drafted DeJuan Wagner.

But Cleveland GM Jim Paxson would be willing to strike a deal if the Knicks could find a third team.

The negotiations are further proof that the Knicks' front office has reached the conclusion that it can no longer survive with Sprewell and Allan Houston playing alongside each other. With Houston?s bloated contract, Sprewell is the only real option to be used in trade.

Wally in Knick world?

Jul 17, 2002 8:14 AM

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports that Wally Szczerbiak could be traded to the Knicks this summer. Szczerbiak?s father revealed that the Timberwolves would be willing to trade his son.  "I think there is a small chance that he could be traded," said Walter Szczerbiak. "At least that is the speculation I get from (Timberwolves vice president) Kevin McHale. "If they feel they're getting a player in return who fits into what they're trying to do, they won't hesitate to pull the trigger."

Wally has been mentioned in many trade rumors because of his reported differences with Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett and because of his contract situation. He will be a free agent next season and wants an extension before that happens. The Timberwolves are unwilling to offer him a $90 million deal, but Szczerbiak will not demand the maximum. However, like any player, "he wants the team to show appreciation for the fact he's been doing the right things.? According to Walter.

Isola writes that the latest trade rumor is a three-weay deal between the ?Wolves, Knicks and Pistons. Szczerbiak would go to the Knicks while Latrell Sprewell would end up in Detroit. The Timberwolves would get Jerry Stackhouse from the Pistons. Other players would have to be involved to make the cap numbers work.

L.A.'s George Wants to play Kidd Games

Jul 16, 2002 5:46 AM

Fred Kerber of the New York Post reports that Devean George can be added to the Jason Kidd Admiration Society. George is in New Jersey meeting with the Nets who are looking to try and lure the 6-8 small forward out of L.A.

In a change from the norm, it was actually the player that set up the meeting. George was so impressed with Kidd?s play in the Finals, that he called the Nets to try to gauge their interest in him. He met with the Nets even after the Timberwolves reportedly offered him all of their mid-class exception in a 6-year, $35 million deal.

George has already visited Chicago and Minnesota, and left for Utah after his meeting with Nets coach Byron Scott and President Rod Thorn. "There is a certain mutual attraction," offered George's agent, Mark Bartelstein. "That's why they had the meeting. It was a good meeting, but other than that it's way too early in the process to predict anything. The Nets certainly play an up-tempo game which is Devean's style. There's not a more athletic 3 out there and he has made himself a great defensive player."

Kerber predicts that the Nets could offer George a 2-year, $10 million deal with the mid-class exception, but playing time could be a problem. If the Nets were to sign George, one of Keith Van Hors, Richard Jefferson or Kenyon Martin would lose some significant minutes, unless a trade can be worked out to free up some roster space. Van Horn is always the subject of trade rumors, but his large contract makes him difficult to deal.

Wolves won't make any big moves soon

Jul 16, 2002 5:34 AM

Minnesota Timberwolves VP Kevin McHale predicts this years? free agency period will be slow. Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune reports that McHale and the Wolves will be cautious this summer with their money.

McHale said Monday he doesn't expect much news to circulate out of Target Center this week and predicted that only a few signings will take place this week as teams, worried about the oncoming luxury tax, will take a more conservative approach in negotiations.

?The economics of the game have changed, and the hardest thing to do is to get the players and the agents to understand that," said McHale. "My portfolio was a lot better before the market went to hell, but it is what it is."

The Wolves expect to take a hit on Wednesday when their free agent point guard, Chauncey Billups, will be free to sign a reported 6-year, $35 million contract with the Pistons. "I talked to his agent a couple of times, and I think Chauncey feels pretty comfortable with Detroit," McHale said.

A minor move may take place this week to help fill the void at point guard after Billups? departure. It appears as if the Wolves are set to sign Khalid El-Amin to add depth to ther backcourt. McHale said they will scour the summer leagues looking for players that can contribute. "We would like to find a guy with some experience," he said.

The Wolves plan on waiting out the initial wave of signings to get some better free agent bargains. Usually after the first initial signings, things start drying up a little bit," McHale said. "All of sudden everybody gets a little bit more reasonable. It's a lot easier to deal with everybody then."

Lewis in Minnesota - Lopez & Johnson Update

Jul 15, 2002 12:12 PM

He is playing for another team but hasn't ruled out rejoining the Jazz.

Quincy Lewis just wants to play, somewhere, anywhere, and that is what seems to be driving Utah's top pick in the 1999 NBA Draft.

"I've got to go where I'll get the best opportunity to play," Lewis, a former University of Minnesota star who is hoping to attract attention in the free-agent market, told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
