Wolves Tried To Trade Out Of No. 1 Even While On The Clock

Jan 28, 2021 1:57 PM

Gersson Rosas had a difficult decision to make with the No. 1 pick as the top two prospects, James Wiseman and LaMelo Ball, play the same positions as the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise cornerstones in Karl-Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell. Minnesota selected Anthony Edwards, who made more sense for the team due to his positional need.

"If he had drafted either Wiseman or Ball, he would have crowded either one of those guys who can block vote against him, frankly," said Brian Windhorst on his podcast. "He tried like hell for months to get out of that No. 1 pick. All the way up until draft night. In fact, the story I've heard, even on the clock he was trying to posture that he was going to take Wiseman in an effort to get the Warriors, who wanted Wiseman really bad, to swap with him and give him his draft pick back."

Wiseman specifically avoided working out for the Wolves, presumably due to the presence of Towns.

Karl-Anthony Towns Tests Positive For COVID-19

Jan 15, 2021 8:25 PM

Karl-Anthony Towns has tested positive for COVID-19.

Towns lost his mother, Jacqueline Cruz-Towns, to COVID-19 at the age of 59 in April. Towns said before the season that six other family members have also died from complications of the virus.

"Prior to tonight's game, I received yet another awful call that I tested positive for COVID," Towns said in a statement shared on social media. "I will immediately isolate and follow every protocol. I pray every day that this nightmare of a virus will subside and I beg everyone to continue to take it seriously by taking all the necessary precautions. ...

"It breaks my heart that my family, and particularly my father and sister continue to suffer from the anxiety that comes along with this diagnosis as we know all too well what the end result could be. To my niece and nephew ... I promise you I will not end up in a box next to grandma and I will beat this."

Wolves Have Had Tepid Market For Selling Franchise

Jan 5, 2021 8:22 AM

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been for sale for several months, leaving NBA owners and league officials to monitor the situation, especially since expansion is also being considered.

Valuations put the Wolves in the $1.3-1.5 billion range including debt, sources said, less than Taylor was hoping to fetch. Taylor has been close to a deal with a group led by Daniel Straus but unable to close. Straus remains the favorite but he revised his offer after it was clear fans would not be back in the arena in large numbers this season. Other firm offers have been tepid.

"I think Glen was hoping team values were still going up," one owner said. "I think we're finding out they may not be right now."

A potential Wolves sale of $1.5 billion or less would mean a correction in the NBA market after a decade of growth. The Wolves are viewed as an attractive relocation franchise, which could lead to a higher purchase price should Taylor be willing to sell it to a group intent on moving the team.

The Utah Jazz sold last month for $1.66 billion, but that might have been an outlier.
