Jaylen Nowell Leaning Towards Leaving Minnesota In Free Agency

Jan 30, 2023 9:53 AM

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Jaylen Nowell's name has popped up some in trade rumors. However, some interested teams may choose to hold off on dealing for Nowell, as signs are the fourth-year guard plans to leave Minnesota as an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Nowell is eligible to a sign an extension worth as much as $58 million over four years. Thus far, Nowell and the Wolves haven't come to any sort of agreement.

In 52 games off the Minnesota bench, Nowell has averaged a career-high 10.9 points in 19.7 minutes per game. However, Nowell's shooting has fallen off to 43.9% from the field, including 27.6% from behind the arc.

Nuggets Discussing Bones Hyland Trades

Jan 30, 2023 9:36 AM

The Denver Nuggets have been discussing trades for Bones Hyland. The Minnesota Timberwolves are on team that is interested in the second-year guard.

Hyland has been a mainstay in Denver's rotation as their backup point guard behind Jamal Murray. However, the Nuggets have increasingly turned to Bruce Brown to play key minutes when Murray is off the floor, including starting when Murray misses games.

Hyland is scoring 12.3 points in 19.9 minutes per game this season. He's improved his three-point shooting this year and is up to 37.9% on 5.9 three-point attempts per game.

When he led the Nuggets front office, Wolves president of basketball operations leader Tim Connelly originally drafted Hyland with the 26th pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA Draft.

Fred VanVleet Drawing Interest From Several Teams, Including Magic

Jan 26, 2023 12:51 AM

Fred VanVleet is drawing trade interest from several teams, including the Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, and Orlando Magic, sources told Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report.

The Magic are reportedly looking to bring in a point guard for the long term to develop next to their young talent, which assumes that VanVleet would re-sign with the team should he get traded.

VanVleet is widely expected to opt out of his player option this summer.

Timberwolves Exploring Trading D'Angelo Russell

Jan 17, 2023 10:27 AM

D'Angelo Russell is in the final season of the four-year $117 million contract he signed as a part of a sign-and-trade to the Golden State Warriors in 2019. As such, Russell's current team, the Minnesota Timberwolves are figuring out how to proceed with the veteran point guard.

Minnesota is exploring the trade market for Russell, while prioritizing adding a point guard under team control. One rumored target for the Wolves is Mike Conley of the Utah Jazz.

Given that Russell isn't a lock to stay in Minnesota, the Wolves are exploring his trade market, as opposed to losing him for nothing in the offseason. The Timberwolves are expected to be well over the cap, so they would have no way to replace Russell, or his salary slot, if he left as an unrestricted free agent.

Russell is shooting a career-high 46% from the field, while averaging 17.1 points and 6.2 assists per game. He's served as a stabilizer of sorts in a Wolves backcourt that has seen both injuries and inconsistent play this season.

D'Angelo Russell 'Conscious' Of Trade Rumors After Extension Talks Went Nowhere

Jan 13, 2023 10:59 AM

D'Angelo Russell and the Minnesota Timberwolves were unable to make progress on a contract extension this past offseason, sources tell Jake Fischer of Yahoo.

Russell is in the final season of a four-year, $117 million deal he initially agreed to as part of a sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors. The Wolves traded for Russell in 2020 under Gersson Rosas.

“Yeah, it’s my life,” Russell told Yahoo. “That’s it. Just be conscious of it.”

The Miami Heat have registered interest in Russell, but a direct deal for Kyle Lowry appears unlikely. The Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns are two teams known to be monitoring potential improvements in the backcourt before the deadline. The Suns were linked to Russell in 2019 as he has a close relationship with Devin Booker.

Russell was asked by Yahoo how he is currently helping to push Anthony Edwards.

“I’m an Alpha as well, you know what I mean?" said Russell. "And I feel like I’m better than a lot of shooting guards and I’m better than a lot of point guards.”

Timberwolves Have Players Only Meeting After Loss To Pistons

Jan 1, 2023 9:29 AM

The Minnesota Timberwolves have underachieved this season. After dropping a home game to the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota finished the 2022 portion of their schedule at 16-21 and in 11th place in the Western Conference. That's a far bit off last season's pace and well below where the team thought they would be after trading for Rudy Gobert.

Following the loss to the Pistons, the Timberwolves held a players only meeting. While no one would say exactly what was talked about, Minnesota center Naz Reid said it was productive.

"I mean, I feel like every team does at some point," Reid said. "So, moving forward, I feel like we could be heading in the right direction. I feel like we had the right conversation."

Reid was frank when asked if it's a mystery as to why the Wolves are struggling.

"Not really. We know. We know. We know why. And ya know, I'm gonna kinda keep that in house. But we know why. That's why I said before, I feel like we can change this. We know we can change it. So, we just got to buy into the things that we know."

Head coach Chris Finch said he has a couple of ideas of how to fix his team's inconsistent effort level.

“Just try to be honest with them, as honest as possible. Try to up the accountability. And maybe I need to think differently about who plays when and how. Maybe I’ve just got to shuffle it up totally different.”
