Knicks Have No Interest In Iverson

May 27, 2012 11:25 AM

The Knicks have no interest in signing Allen Iverson, according to a source close to the situation.

Iverson told a national TV audience on Wednesday: “I want to play basketball so bad.”

Glen Grunwald confirmed the Knicks will seek to solidify their backcourt through the draft or free agency.

“We have two guards who are restricted free agents, so we’ll be able to retain them,’’ Grunwald said of Jeremy Lin and Landry Fields. “The question is then how we fill out the rest because Baron suffered a pretty bad injury and he’s not going to be able to play next year. And Shump is going to be out a bit recovering from his injuries. We’re going to have to see if we can upgrade the rest of the roster while Shump is out.’’

Phil Jackson Remains 'Ambivalent About Coaching Again'

May 26, 2012 11:12 AM

The Knicks agreed to a multi-year deal with Mike Woodson on Friday and never reached out to another candidate, including Phil Jackson.

GM Glen Grunwald acknowledged Jackson’s standing as “the most successful coach in N.B.A. history,” but said, “We felt Woody was our guy.” He said Woodson sealed the deal during the interview process.

“We told Woody he would get the first crack at the job, and he hit it out of the park,” Grunwald said.

People close to Jackson have said he would listen if the Knicks inquired, but that he may not be ready to return to coaching. On Friday, one friend reaffirmed that Jackson remains “ambivalent about coaching again.”

Knicks Sign Mike Woodson To Extension

May 25, 2012 6:07 PM

Mike Woodson has been given a multi-year contract extension by the Knicks.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports that the deal is for three years.

“Mike took over the team under challenging circumstances and made it clear, starting on day one, that he was going to hold every player on our roster accountable,” said James Dolan, Executive Chairman, The Madison Square Garden Company. “We saw a significant improvement since Mike took over and believe our team will only keep improving under Mike’s direction.”

Woodson, who had served as New York’s interim head coach since Mar. 14, 2012, guided the Knicks to an 18-6 regular-season mark and the franchise’s second consecutive playoff berth. Over the last 24 games of the regular season, the Knicks posted the second-best record in the NBA and the team’s defense ranked fifth in the NBA in points allowed (91.8) and eighth in opponents’ field goal percentage (.440). Woodson became the first head coach in franchise history to win his first five games and posted the second-best winning percentage ever by an NBA coach who took over a team midseason.

“Mike has the respect of every person in this organization,” Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations and General Manager Glen Grunwald said. “He and his staff led the team in an impressive push into the playoffs over the last 24 games and we believe he is the right man to lead the franchise as we move forward.”

Machado Would Like To Play For Knicks

May 24, 2012 10:50 PM

Scott Machado, a 6-foot-1 point guard, sees himself as a good fit for the Knicks.

"For any point guard that wants to play here, I feel like it's a good opportunity," Machado said. "They got some players that are banged up, hurt or some players that are retiring or old.

"As far as the opportunity here, it's a wonderful spot, they have a lot of pieces. Somewhere they need to grow solid in is the point guard spot. That's my opinion. I feel like it's a good opportunity for any point guard."

Machado led the nation in assists as a senior at Iona, a small Division I school located in New Rochelle, NY.

"It would be a wonderful feeling to be able to stay home," Machado said.

Source: Dwight Still Wants Trade

May 22, 2012 11:01 AM

Dwight Howard still prefers a trade from the Magic, according to a source.

Orlando announced that the tenures of Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith were over on Monday, but Howard still seeks a trade before the start of the season, according to the source.

The Nets are considered the frontrunner, but "it is not going to be a one-horse race,” the source said. The Mavericks and Knicks are also in the conversation, while the Lakers and Clippers are as well to a lesser extent.

Howard is eager to begin the next phase of his career and the Magic don't want a repeat of circumstances they endured during the 11-12 season.

Executives from the Magic are expected to meet with Howard soon and will accomodate his trade request should he ask for a trade.

The team that is able and willing to take back the contract of Hedo Turkoglu is likely to have an edge in trading for Howard.
