Spurs 'Head Over Heels With' Kristaps Porzingis

Apr 27, 2018 4:25 PM

The San Antonio Spurs are said to be "head over heels with" Kristaps Porzingis.

If the Spurs were to trade Kawhi Leonard to the New York Knicks, they would require Porzingis and a first round pick back for him.

Porzingis is recovering from a torn ACL and will become eligible for an extension this offseason.

Enes Kanter Again Suggests He Could Opt Out Of Deal With Knicks

Apr 26, 2018 7:11 PM

Enes Kanter gave another indication that he will opt out of his $18.6 million option with the New York Knicks.

Kanter attended Oklahoma City's Game 5 win over the Jazz, and was asked about how the team couldn't put him on the video screen since that could be interpreted as tampering because he's still on the Knicks.

"Am I? Am I?" asked Kanter.

Kanter was then asked if he's going to opt out.

"Until July 1, yes. We’ll talk to teams. We’ll see," said Kanter.

Kanter was then told that would be tampering.

"Wow. That’s crazy. It’s OK. Whatever. I’ll just get up and just wave. It’s cool, though. I’m excited, though, man. I’m really excited about this watching. It’s gonna be awkward. It’s gonna be weird. Just seeing, just watching my teammates play — ex-teammates — playing basketball. It’s gonna be cool. We’ll see."

Kanter recently hired prominent agent Mark Bartelstein, who said no decision has been reached.

“I wouldn’t read too much into it,’’ Bartelstein told The Post. “We’re still doing our due diligence.’’

Knicks To Meet With David Blatt In Europe

Apr 24, 2018 10:06 AM

Steve Mills and Scott Perry will travel to Europe this week to meet with David Blatt.

Blatt is a candidate for the New York Knicks' head coaching job.

The Knicks will also scout Luka Doncic while in Europe.

The Knicks have spoken with Jerry Stackhouse, Mark Jackson, Mike Woodson, David Fizdale, Kenny Smith and Mike Budenholzer.

Phil Jackson interviewed fewer candidates in two coaching searches and went on vacation during the second one.

“We’re going to be very open to exploring a number of different candidates with the number of qualities we’re looking for,” Perry said. “Not every person is going to check every single box that you’d like to check. But we’ll find someone who will fit and carry out our rebuilding process.

“We’re going to do our due diligence and take the time to find the right guy.”

Brian Scalabrine Takes Blame For Issues Coaching With Mark Jackson

Apr 23, 2018 4:19 PM

Brian Scalabrine took responsibility for his fallout as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors under Mark Jackson and recommended him for the New York Knicks' vacancy.

"It was totally my fault," said Scalabrine.

Scalabrine was demoted to coaching the D-League for what Jackson later labeled as “disrespect.”

“It was like no locker room I’ve ever been a part of, just his technique for motivating guys to run through a wall for him,” Scalabrine told the Daily News. “And if I had a young team I would definitely think about hiring a guy like Mark because there’s a certain amount of development that has to happen in the NBA. And guys need to take strides. And confidence is a big part of it. And he knows how to bring out that confidence.”

Scalabrine understands now he should have been more supportive of Jackson.

“I grew as a coach during my time with him and looking back it was totally my fault. I didn’t understand – at the time it was difficult to understand the pressures of being a head coach in this league. I could have done a better job of supporting him,” Scalabrine told The News, adding later, “I could have done a much better job of handling my situation. No question about it. I was young — the youngest bench coach and assistant in the NBA. I didn’t understand the pressures of being a head coach. There’s a lot of things I could’ve done better. And also I could’ve handled it better when I eventually got out. For me, it was a good opportunity. It was a really good growing experience for me. Mark made me a better coach.”

The Hawks have told teams that they will require compensation to allow Budenholzer out of his contract.

James Dolan: I Just Think Phil Jackson Underestimated The Job

Apr 19, 2018 11:11 AM

James Dolan lamented the tenure of Phil Jackson as president of the New York Knicks.

“Everybody who wants to talk about the Knicks wants to ask me about Phil Jackson,” Dolan said, smiling and shaking his head. “The entire market wanted to me to hire him and when I did, the entire market said it was a great move. The only thing was, everyone said that I shouldn’t interfere with him.

“Three years later, everyone wanted to know when I was going to do something about Phil. The same people who told me not to interfere wanted me to interfere. But that’s OK. I just think that Phil underestimated the job.”

Jackson was fired by the Knicks shortly after last June's draft.

James Dolan: A Great Player In Basketball Is The Team

Apr 19, 2018 11:03 AM

James Dolan talked about the New York Knicks as they missed the playoffs again.

Dolan acknowledged the significance of having Kristaps Porzingis to build around.

“Basketball is different than hockey,” Dolan said. “A great player in hockey is the difference, but a great player in basketball is the team.

“And I think we have a great player in Porzingis. We just have to build around him.”

The Knicks will be without Porzingis while he rehabs his torn ACL.

“I’ve been told everything from December to him being out for the season, so I don’t know what to expect on that,” Dolan said. “But we can’t just sit on our ass while he’s away. We need to develop a team and then integrate him into it when he comes back.”
