Cavs' Paul George Trade Fell Apart On Pick Protections

Jul 28, 2017 10:11 AM

The Indiana Pacers had Kyrie Irving as their No. 1 target when working on a Paul George trade in June.

The Pacers were willing to trade George for Irving straight-up, but the Cavaliers declined the offer several times.

Cleveland instead worked with the Pacers on a three-way trade involving Kevin Love going to the Denver Nuggets with Indiana getting a package centered around Gary Harris.

The deal fell apart when Cleveland refused to trade a future first round pick without any pick protections. The Cavaliers insisted on a lottery protection for the pick.

The Pacers pivoted to a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder in which they acquired Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis.

Dan Gilbert Believes Pacers Could Have Made Better Paul George Trade

Jul 27, 2017 9:09 AM

Dan Gilbert believes the Indiana Pacers could have received a better trade package for Paul George than the one they agreed upon with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"I will say that Indiana could've done better than it did," Gilbert said.

The Cleveland Cavaliers thought they had a deal in place to acquire George in a trade that would have sent Kevin Love to the Denver Nuggets, and Gary Harris as the centerpiece to the Pacers.

The Pacers, however, dispute there was ever an agreement, sources said.

"That's been well-publicized," Altman said of the George deal that fell through. "I don't want to talk about that. What's interesting is, over the course of the NBA draft, there's 60 picks. In the first round, there's five minutes between picks. I probably made 200 phone calls that night, and none of that gets publicized. We're actively trying to get better and discover what opportunities that are out there. It's the ones that sort of don't make it to the media that are the ones you're more crushed about.

"So, we're very active during that time. Also, we're aggressive in trying to figure out how can we get better for this organization. So, I'm not going to talk about that specific trade, but know that we were active during that time and every team in the NBA was active during that time, trying to help their respective franchises."

Carmelo Anthony, Thunder Have Mutual Interest

Jul 24, 2017 9:32 PM

The Oklahoma City Thunder could be a trade candidate for Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony has a full no-trade clause with the New York Knicks and has preferred a trade to the Houston Rockets or Cleveland Cavaliers.

Troy Weaver helped recruit Anthony when he was an assistant coach at Syracuse. Weaver has been assistant general manager of the Thunder since the 10-11 season.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News reports that one source doubts Anthony would play for the Thunder but he would possibly be willing to discuss it. A second source simply said "Houston" when asked about the Thunder report.

Cavs Thought They Had Paul George Trade Agreed Upon On June 30th

Jul 23, 2017 6:58 PM

On June 30th, the Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets thought they had a Paul George deal in place.

Everyone tentatively agreed on a conference call between the teams.

George was going to be traded by the Pacers to the Cavaliers with Kevin Love going to the Nuggets and Gary Harris moving to Indiana in a package involving other pieces.

A call was to be arranged between George and Dan Gilbert, which was an important step before finalizing the trade. Cleveland's front office began making other plans for the offseason.

Kevin Pritchard then sent message that the Pacers were backing out and then quickly agreed to a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Cavaliers Believe They Could Have Turned Irving, Love Into Chris Paul, Paul George

Jul 21, 2017 6:55 PM

The Cleveland Cavaliers believe they could have turned Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love into Chris Paul and Paul George in June.

Cleveland kept both Irving and Love in June as they were unaware Irving would soon be requesting a trade before the end of July.

Paul orchestrated an opt-in and trade from the Los Angeles Clippers to the Houston Rockets before the start of free agency.

George was traded on June 30th by the Indiana Pacers to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Sam Presti Gave Front Office MacGyver Notecards For Offseason Inspiration

Jul 14, 2017 12:35 PM

After the Oklahoma City Thunder were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by the Houston Rockets, Sam Presti handed his top lieutenants notecards with a picture of MacGyver on it.

Presti's message was obvious to his front office colleagues.

“We’ll have to use some tools we don’t have yet or some tools we haven’t had,” said director of basketball operations Paul Rivers, “and look from a perspective we haven’t had to look from before.”

The Thunder possessed less assets than many other teams but still found a way to trade for Paul George.

Presti conveyed an empathetic message to Kevin Pritchard as he recently went through a similar situation with Kevin Durant.

“I’ve been in this situation,” Presti told Pritchard. “It’s hard. I wish we weren’t talking about it.”

Paul George Was Surprised By Trade To Thunder

Jul 13, 2017 10:00 AM

Paul George was shocked when he learned he had been traded by the Indiana Pacers to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Thunder were not previously mentioned as a team who could potentially trade for George.

"It was surprising. This team wasn't one of the teams that we had in mind," George said. "I thought I was going to four or five other teams that were pretty active in trade [talks]. When I found out it was OKC, I was quite surprised, but at the same time I was happy about the trade. I was thrilled, I was looking forward to it. All I wanted was a chance and an opportunity to play for something special and ultimately to try and win a championship, and right off the bat I think I can do that here playing alongside Russ [Russell Westbrook]."

George had informed the Pacers, through his agent, that he intended to sign elsewhere when he reached unrestricted free agency next summer.

"The risk in this decision was not making it," Thunder general manager Sam Presti said.
