Magic coach Stan Van Gundy might be biased, but he recently told the Boston Globe why he feels as though the NBA is far superior to the NCAA.
"Clearly, I don't think [college basketball] is better. You'll see more good plays, great plays by players, in one NBA game than you will in the entire March Madness. That's me. It's not any knock on anything. These are the best players in the world going out every night," Van Gundy said.
The Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard and the San Antonio Spurs' Tony Parker today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, March 23, through Sunday, March 29.
Howard led Orlando to a 3-0 record, averaging 23.7 points on .614 shooting from the field, 14.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocks for the Magic, which clinched its second consecutive Southeast Division title. During Orlando?s 84-82 win over Boston on March 25, Howard posted 24 points, 21 rebounds and four blocks. Orlando owns a half-game lead on Boston in the race for the second seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Parker averaged 27.5 points and 8.3 assists in leading San Antonio to a 3-1 week. Parker recorded back-to-back 30-point, 10-assist games on March 24 vs. Golden State and March 25 at Atlanta. On March 29 at New Orleans, Parker scored his 10,000th career point, becoming the fourth Spur player to accomplish the feat.
Press Release
Magic coach Stan Van Gundy doesn't believe that the Knicks appreciate Patrick Ewing enough.
Van Gundy criticized the team for not hiring Ewing after his retirement a few seasons ago, saying they "pretend to appreciate him."
"With Patrick, the one thing I've said, and I'm not trying to tell them their business," Van Gundy said. "They honor the guy every year. They honor him, but while they have a lot of ex-players in the organization, they've never moved to try to hire him.
"He was not only the face of the franchise, he was their best player, the hardest worker and gave them a chance to be great. But when it's time to put up or shut up, they do nothing, and it's been amazing and our good fortune in Orlando.
"It's sort of back and forth," he added. "The fans certainly love him. The organization, the guy can't get an interview. The organization sort of pretends to appreciate him."
Magic center Dwight Howard doesn't believe that the Knicks will have trouble landing a pair of top-flight free agents in the summer of 2010.
"You know, a lot of people would love to play in New York," Howard said.
"Not only just because of the city, but the opportunities for people to say they were on that stage."
Howard doesn't believe that the rough seasons the team has suffered through recently will play a factor in the decision of guys like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh.
"Everybody says [it is in decline] just because they've had a couple of bad seasons," Howard said.
"It's still a place that has a lot of history. When people play there, it's like the basketball spirits are still in the arena."
The Orlando Magic have re-signed free agent center Adonal Foyle, General Manager Otis Smith announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed.
Foyle played in five games this season with the Magic, averaging 1.2 ppg. and 2.2 rpg. in 5.8 minpg., before being traded to Memphis as part of the three-team deal that sent Rafer Alston to Orlando on Feb. 19. He also played in one game with the Grizzlies and did not score in three minutes. Foyle was waived by Memphis on Mar. 1.
Originally selected by Golden State in the first round (eighth overall) of the 1997 NBA Draft, Foyle (6?10?, 270, 3/9/75) has appeared in 729 regular season games during his 11-year NBA career with Golden State, Orlando and Memphis, averaging 4.1 ppg., 4.7 rpg. and 1.63 blkpg. in 17.9 minpg. Foyle is Golden State's all-time franchise leader in blocked shots with 1,140.
Adonal Foyle, who was was dealt to Memphis in a three-team trade deadline deal Feb. 19 that also involved the Houston Rockets and brought the Magic Rafer Alston, is expected to re-sign with the Magic, the Sentinel has learned.
Foyle, who will most likely join the team in New York on Monday, was waived by the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this month after a buyout agreement was reached for his contract.
Patrick Ewing continues to make it known that he wants to be a head coach in the very near future.
Ewing, currently an assistant with Orlando, will see his contract expire at the end of the season.
"I hope so," Ewing told the New York Post of getting an opportunity to coach. "I think every assistant coach in this league would love to get an opportunity. Herb [Williams] would love to get some interviews, too. We're not in it just to be assistants our whole career. We would love to have the opportunity to be a head coach. Either him or myself hopefully will get an opportunity this summer."
Magic center Dwight Howard has heard his name whispered in the MVP conversation lately, but he isn't focused on the award.
"Once it's my time, then it's my time," Howard said. "Right now, my main concern is not MVP, but making sure we win games. That's the only way we can win a championship."
Howard believes that he'll need to win an NBA Title in order for people to give him serious MVP consideration, but coach Stan Van Gundy disagrees.
"No question he belongs in the MVP conversation," Van Gundy said.
