Magic Decline 18-19 Option On Mario Hezonja

The Orlando Magic have declined their fourth year option on Mario Hezonja.

Hezonja, who was the fifth overall pick in 2015, was shopped by the Magic leading to Tuesday's deadline.

Hezonja joins Jahlil Okafor as another top-5 pick to have his option declined. The 2009 draft also had two players in which their teams declined their option in Hasheem Thabeet and Jonny Flynn.

The Magic have to decide whether to pick up their $5.2 million option on Hezonja for the 17-18 season by the end of Tuesday.

Orlando discussed a trade of Hezonja for Malachi Richardson and a second round pick.

Artis went undrafted in 2017 out of Pittsburgh.

Artis played for the New York Knicks in Summer League and the preseason.

The Orlando Magic have waived guards Troy Caupain and Rodney Purvis.

Orlando’s roster now stands at 18 players.

Caupain and Purvis did not appear in any preseason games with the Magic.

Caupain was originally signed as a free agent on August 31, while Purvis was signed as a free agent on October 9.

The Orlando Magic have signed free agent guard Rodney Purvis.

Orlando’s roster now stands at 20 players.

Purvis (6’4”, 205, 2/14/94) played in 137 career games (100 starts) during four years at both North Carolina State (2012-13) and the University of Connecticut (2014-17), averaging 11.6 ppg., 3.0 rpg. and 1.8 apg. in 29.1 minpg. Last season, he appeared in 33 games (32 starts), averaging 13.8 ppg., 4.2 rpg., 2.5 apg. and 1.03 stlpg. in 36.9 minpg. As a sophomore (2014-15), Purvis led the Huskies in scoring during the postseason, averaging 17.8 ppg., and was named to the 2015 American Athletic Conference’s All-Tournament Team.

Magic Hire Tracy McGrady As Special Assistant To Alex Martins

The Orlando Magic have hired Tracy McGrady as a special assistant to CEO Alex Martins.

McGrady grew up near the new Lakeland Magic G League franchise and he'll help promote that venture. 

McGrady will also be around to work Magic players and coaches both on and off the court.

The Magic traded McGrady in 2004 after the relationship became strained but it had been repaired over the years.

Adreian Payne Suffers Broken Hand

Adreian Payne suffered a fractured fourth metacarpal in his left hand.

His return to play will depend on how the injury heals and how he responds to treatment.

Payne (6’10”, 237, 2/19/91) signed a two-way contract with Orlando on August 21. He did not play in the Magic’s preseason opener on October 2 at Memphis.

Payne appeared in 18 games last season with Minnesota, averaging 3.5 ppg. and 1.8 rpg. in 7.5 minpg. He also spent time with the Erie BayHawks of the NBA G League.
