Magic Considering Kevin McHale For President Job

Apr 28, 2017 6:38 PM

The Orlando Magic have serious interest in hiring Kevin McHale for their team president position.

The Magic fired Rob Hennigan on April 13th.

McHale is working for TNT as a color analyst after his departure from the Houston Rockets as head coach last season. McHale served as Minnesota Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations from 1995 to 2008.

Magic owner Rich DeVos and CEO Alex Martins are leading the process.

Adrian Wojnarowski also reported on Friday that Larry Bird could be a candidate for the job.

Vlade Divac Tried To Hire Scott Perry In Past

Apr 22, 2017 1:22 PM

The Sacramento Kings hired Scott Perry on Friday, which is a move Vlade Divac tried to execute in the past.

“I have known Scott for a long time, and he is very well respected within the league, and with players and agents. I contacted him previously when he was with (former Orlando Magic general manager) Rob (Hennigan), and asked if they would let him go. They said no. But when he became available, I reached out and we talked about the possibility of him joining me. This was my guy. He’s another guy who likes what we are trying to do and has similar thought on players.

“He is that guy, the one who can talk to anyone and knows everyone in the league and (college)."

The Kings have also hired Luke Bornn this offseason, while bringing in Ken Catanella last offseason.

According to numerous league insiders, NBA team executives have found it difficult to negotiate with the Kings because of their thin and inexperienced front office, which these hires should improve.

Perry had been with the Orlando Magic for the past five seasons.

Perry will report to Vlade Divac and work closely with Ken Catanella and Luke Bornn.

After coaching in college, Perry joined the Detroit Pistons' front office under Joe Dumars in 2000. Perry then worked under Sam Presti with the Oklahoma City Thunder before joining the Magic in 2012 as assistant general manager.

Magic Interested In David Griffin For GM Job

Apr 21, 2017 10:52 AM

The Orlando Magic have interest in hiring David Griffin as general manager.

Because Griffin is without a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 17-18 season, the Magic may wait to finalize their search until after the playoffs.

Talks between Griffin and the Cavaliers on an extension have stalled for months. Dan Gilbert has been reluctant to pay Griffin the going rate for a championship-level executive.

The Magic are searching for a replacement for Rob Hennigan with Matt Lloyd filling the role on an interim basis. Lloyd is so well-respected amongst his peers that some have been reluctant to offer recommendations to the Magic because they hope he gets the job.

Alex Martins has been engaged with identifying and vetting candidates despite using Jed Hughes of the Korn Ferry search firm.

Magic Interested In Grant Hill As President Of Basketball Operations

Apr 13, 2017 10:59 AM

The Orlando Magic have interest in hiring Grant Hill as president of basketball operations.

Hill would have to divest his small ownership stake in the Atlanta Hawks and it is also unclear if he has interest in the job. Hill currently works as an analyst for Turner and CBS.

Other candidates for the job include Pat Garrity and Travis Schlenk.

Matt Lloyd replaced Rob Hennigan as interim general manager and is a candidate for the permanent job.

Magic Fire Rob Hennigan As GM, Matt Lloyd Promoted On Interim Basis

Apr 13, 2017 10:31 AM

The Orlando Magic have fired Rob Hennigan as general manager.

Hennigan was hired by the Magic in 2012.

“We appreciate Rob’s efforts to rebuild the team, but feel we have not made any discernible improvement over the last few years specifically.  It's time for different leadership in basketball operations.  We certainly wish Rob and his family well,” said Martins. “Matt brings solid experience and his appointment as general manager on an interim basis will allow us to seamlessly continue our preparations for the upcoming draft.”

Matt Lloyd has been named interim general manager and will be considered as a candidate for the job permanently.

Lloyd was named assistant general manager of the Magic on June 29, 2012.  He came to Orlando after spending 13 years with the Chicago Bulls, his last five as their director of college scouting. In that position, Lloyd oversaw the scouting and information compilation of prospects for the NBA Draft, along with statistical analysis of pro and amateur players. He implemented and maintained a database which organized scouting information.

Frank Vogel: Teams Struggle Playing Big Without All-Star Level PF

Apr 6, 2017 11:28 AM

The Orlando Magic never established the "smart, physical, unselfish, defensive-minded” identity Rob Hennigan expected them to have this season.

The Magic tried to play two big men together.

Frank Vogel sees the Magic now as a “small-ball team that plays up-tempo and does a lot of switching and swarming.”

The Magic have moved Aaron Gordon from small forward to power forward.

“I think the biggest thing it depends on is the power forward position,” Vogel said Wednesday. “What’s your best power forward’s identity? If it’s LaMarcus Aldridge, you’re going to be a big, pound-it-in-the-post team. If it’s Aaron Gordon, you’re going to be an up-tempo, run-the-floor team. It depends mostly on that, I think. But this is how most of the league is playing right now. So if you’re going to try to play big, you’ve got to do it with basically an All-Star-level power forward or you’re going to struggle.”

Gordon clearly fits better offensively at power forward.

“We’ll see what the roster looks like next year,” Vogel said. “You have to create your style of play based on what your roster looks like. But there’s definitely a feeling that what we’ve done the second part of the season has the development of our young guys and this group going in the right direction.”

Frank Vogel Meets With Aaron Gordon About Dario Saric Trade Rumor

Apr 4, 2017 10:33 PM

Frank Vogel spoke with Aaron Gordon following the publication of a photo that seemed to suggest the Orlando Magic are internally considering a trade of Aaron Gordon to the Philadelphia 76ers for Dario Saric.

“Typically, with rumors and stuff like that, we don’t really address them,” Vogel said today when asked about the photo. “But this is a unique situation, and I talked to him a little bit this morning, and everybody’s good. We’re ready to move on.”

Vogel and Gordon would not divulge what they said during their meeting.

“It was definitely something that I wasn’t aware of before,” Gordon said when asked about the dry-erase board’s content.

“It wasn’t for me to see, so for me to see something like that, it brings something that’s out of my control into my reality. But that’s neither here nor there. My plan and my focus is to play basketball and to enjoy the game of basketball. Anything other than that is out of my control. I love this organization and I’m going to continue to work hard and play.”

Rob Hennigan Downplays Significance Of Whiteboard Leak

Apr 4, 2017 11:37 AM

Rob Hennigan downplayed a photo Monday night that appeared to show confidential lists of the possible free agent and trade priorities of the Orlando Magic.

Hennigan addressed the lists after a flurry of speculation surfaced over the photo, which was tweeted by agent Carlos Prunes and showed Garino at the Magic facilities signing a contract.

Hennigan told the Sentinel the lists on the board were "not indicative of plans" and were "simply listing options, including some of which other teams have inquired about."

Danilo Gallinari, Paul Millsap, Andre Iguodala, Wilson Chandler, Stanley Johnson, Marcus Morris, Dario Saric and others were listed on the whiteboard.
