The Toronto Raptors will acquire a second round pick in 2018 from the Orlando Magic as compensation for Jeff Weltman.

Weltman was hired by the Magic this week as president of basketball operations.

Orlando will send the Raptors the least favorable of two second round picks they control in 2018. The Magic have their own second round pick in 2018 along with the second round pick of the Los Angeles Lakers as part of the Dwight Howard trade.

When the Orlando Magic interviewed candidates for their president of basketball operations job, it was conveyed that keeping Frank Vogel was non-negotiable.

Vogel is coming off the first season of a four-year deal with the Magic. Vogel represented the Magic at the lottery.

The Magic hired Jeff Weltman as president of basketball operations with John Hammond joining him as general manager.

John Hammond has agreed upon a five-year deal with the Orlando Magic to become general manager.

Hammond will reunite with Jeff Weltman, who was hired on Monday as president of basketball operations.

Hammond had one season remaining on his deal with the Bucks, who let him out of the contract. Justin Zanik had been the GM in waiting with the expectation he'd take over in 2018.

Hammond had been the Bucks’ GM since 2008, drafting a fine young core of Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jabari Parker, Thon Maker and Malcolm Brogdon.

The Magic also interviewed Hammond for the job that eventually went to Weltman.

With Jeff Weltman joining the Orlando Magic as president of basketball operations, there is a rising expectation that John Hammond will join him in the front office.

Hammond has one more season remaining on his contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. Justin Zanik is expected to take over general manager duties with the Bucks after the 17-18 season.

Weltman worked with Hammond in the Milwaukee front office before he joined Masai Ujiri with the Toronto Raptors.

John Hammond interviewed with the Orlando Magic for their president of basketball operations opening before the job was eventually given to Jeff Weltman.

Hammond received a contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks in June of 2016 that will take him through 17-18. 

Justin Zanik will become general manager of the Bucks in 2018. Hammond could remain with the Bucks as a consultant.

Hammond first became general manager of the Bucks in 2008.

Matt Lloyd will remain with the Orlando Magic in a role to be determined. 

Lloyd had been serving as interim general manager of Orlando following the dismissal of Rob Hennigan.

The Magic hired Jeff Weltman as president of basketball operations on Monday.

Lloyd rose in influence within the Orlando front office after serving as a scout for several seasons with the Chicago Bulls.

Jeff Weltman has agreed to become President of Basketball Operations for the Orlando Magic on a five-year contract.

Weltman will replace Rob Hennigan, who was fired at the start of the offseason. Weltman will decide who to hire as general manager below him.

Weltman has been with the Toronto Raptors since 2013. Weltman previously was with the Milwaukee Bucks from 2008.

Dan Gilbert has been unresponsive to requests from the Orlando Magic to interview David Griffin.

Griffin's contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers expires at the end of June.

Gilbert could be hoping that the Magic get tired of waiting for Griffin.

Cleveland has yet to make a substantive offer to Griffin on an extension.

Frank Vogel will represent the Orlando Magic at the draft lottery on May 16th.

Pat Williams will also attend. Williams was general manager of the Magic when they won the lottery in two straight years in the early 1990s.

The Magic are currently without a general manager following the dismissal of Rob Hennigan. Orlando's search for a new front office is expected to take several more weeks.

While David Griffin remains the top target for the Orlando Magic, they also have interest in John Hammond, Jeff Weltman and Kevin McHale.

Weltman is general manager of the Toronto Raptors, working under Masai Ujiri.
