Dr. J Interested In Purchasing 76ers

Oct 20, 2006 8:52 AM

Julius Erving, according to the Philadelphia Daily News, has put together an ownership group to purchase the Sixers from Comcast-Spectacor.

The club could be sold for as much as $450 million, which would be an NBA record.

An August 4th statement released by the organization is something they are still standing behind.

"We have been approached by multiple parties interested in purchasing the Philadelphia 76ers, particularly in the wake of recent speculation. While this is not the first time we have received some inquiries, we have decided to engage the services of Galatioto Sports Partners, an industry-leading sports-investment firm, to help us evaluate our strategic alternatives, including a sale or a new partnership. We emphasize that no decision has been made to sell the 76ers."

Free-Agent Rookie McFarlin Impresses Cheeks

Oct 7, 2006 4:19 AM

One guy who did impress Sixers coach Mo Cheeks during Thursday night's 104-99 loss to Winterthur FC Barcelona was free agent rookie Ivan McFarlin, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

"Ivan McFarlin encouraged me, the way he stepped out on the floor and played with energy," Cheeks said after practice at Palau Sant Jordi Annex.

It was a good game for McFarlin, a 6-foot-8, 235-pound free-agent rookie forward who played in France last season. In about 121/2 minutes of playing time, he scored six points and grabbed four rebounds, and made coaches, teammates and opponents take notice with his hustle.

For a guy striving to make his first NBA team, it was a good first step.

"I feel it helped my chances to make the team, but it's just one game and there are many more to come," McFarlin said. "So I just have to play hard and play like I've been playing and hopefully I can make the team."

Steven Smith Hoping To Make Hometown Team

Oct 2, 2006 7:37 AM

Going to training camp for his hometown team, the Philadelphia 76ers, is a dream come true for the undrafted Steven Smith, even if he doesn't have a guaranteed contract.

"I think I've showed everybody that I can play and that I'm not a slouch," Smith said yesterday after the Sixers finished their second day of training camp at Palau Sant Jordi Annex. "I had a lot of [NBA] people tell me that I had a great summer.

"It's unfortunate that I still don't have a deal yet, but I'm not letting that get me down because I love to play. Basketball is basketball to me, and I'm glad to be here. It's a great opportunity, and once I get in here, I'm going to do whatever it takes, do my part to help us succeed."
