Carril: 76ers Need A True Point Guard

Dec 31, 2009 7:34 AM

Legendary Princeton coach Pete Carril believes that the 76ers can have success using the Princeton-style offense.

Carril spent time with Philadelphia coach Eddie Jordan when they were both assistants in Sacramento.

"It's really a nice team, but what I really think what he might need is a point guard," Carril said.

Jordan said before the season that Philadelphia didn't really need a true point guard.

"He a great player, but I think more of a slasher, a scorer," Carril said of Lou Williams. "He can become a point guard in that system, but it's very hard. Believe it or not, I think that the guy who can do it is Allen Iverson. I don't know if he wants to do it, but he's a great passer. What he does for [Sam] Dalembert ... Take a look at the box score and when Iverson's in the game; Dalembert's in double figures. When Iverson's not in the game, his numbers go down.

"Iverson was always a great passer. He did what he thought he had to do to [in years past] and that was shoot. Right or wrong, that's what he did and sometimes had to do. But he is a great, great passer. A point guard will work it so that a team will get a better shot than what they're getting now."

Miller Attributes 76ers' Struggles To New System

Dec 28, 2009 2:39 PM

Portland point guard Andre Miller, who left the 76ers as a free agent this past offseason, believes that his former team is struggling under new coach Eddie Jordan's Princeton offense.

"I think it's just they're playing under a new system," Miller said. "I think that's it. Those guys are athletes over there and they want to get up and down the court and fastbreak and force turnovers, and I think right now they're getting taught, basically, how to play college basketball. Passing and cutting and stuff like that."

Miller was then asked if he felt as though Jordan's system was right for his old teammates.

"I don't know," he said. "It's hard - some guys over there didn't go to college. That's a system that's going to take time. That's a lot of athletes over there. It takes time and you have to be a thinker at the same time."

Speights Addresses Brand's Comments

Dec 28, 2009 2:36 PM

Philadelphia forward Marreese Speights addressed comments on Sunday night that were made by teammate Elton Brand last week.

Following a loss to Washington last Tuesday, Brand said: "Certain guys didn't box out, didn't rebound, and weren't tough. Certain guys got a longer leash than others, so they played longer and the mistakes were shown."

Brand didn't specifically name Speights, but it was quite obvious that he was referring to the second-year man.

"I was kind of upset because I wouldn't think my teammate would throw me under the bus like that," Speights said. "I would never say nothing like that about him. But, hey, he's been in the league longer than me, so I can't say nothing about it."

Brand Questions Teammates Effort, Jordan's Rotation

Dec 24, 2009 9:12 AM

Philadelphia forward Elton Brand is starting to express his frustration more and more.

Brand complained about the team getting off to slow starts. The 76ers have trailed by double-digits in the first half in each of their last four games.

Coach Eddie Jordan has had Brand coming off the bench in all those contests.

"It's happening every night," said Brand of the slow starts. "We have to fight and claw back to get a lead. It's tough playing like that."

Brand also mentioned what he perceives as Jordan playing "certain guys" despite having said player(s) who don't "box out, rebound and weren't tough."

"Certain guys got a longer leash than others, so they played longer and the mistakes were shown," he added. "No one should be on a long leash if you don't box out, don't rebound or play 'D'. You shouldn't be out there."

Brand appeared to be referring to forward Marreese Speights.

Four days earlier after tipping in a missed Speights shot to stun the Celtics, Brand told reporters that when "Speights got the ball you knew he wasn't going to pass. He doesn't pass."

Lou Williams To Start On Tuesday

Dec 22, 2009 7:14 AM

Philadelphia guard Lou Williams will return to the starting lineup on Tuesday night.

Williams broke his jaw on Nov. 24 against Washington and returned to action earlier than expected on Saturday against the Clippers.

"I hate to sit a guy like Lou Williams who [prior to injury], the last six games or five games, was averaging over 25 points a game," coach Eddie Jordan said. "He didn't lose his job because of not performing. He wanted to come back. That's a good thing."

Williams will start alongside rookie Jrue Holiday as Allen Iverson battles a knee injury.

Iverson Won't Return Until At Least Dec. 28

Dec 20, 2009 10:51 AM

Philadelphia guard Allen Iverson won't return until Dec. 28 against Portland at the earliest.

Iverson missed his second straight game on Saturday night with arthritis in his left knee.

"Rest is the best thing for him, for about a week now," coach Eddie Jordan said before the 76ers battled the Clippers. "He feels confident that he'll feel great the rest of the year."

The 76ers did get some good news on Saturday when guard Lou Williams, who broke his jaw on Nov. 24, returned to the lineup much earlier than expected.

Williams had six points and four assists in 29 minutes against Los Angeles.

Iverson Doesn't Make Trip To Boston

Dec 18, 2009 7:28 AM

Philadelphia guard Allen Iverson did not make the trip to Boston with his teammates ahead of Friday night's game against the Celtics.

Iverson is dealing with left knee arthritis and a left shoulder contusion.

The team said Iverson underwent an MRI on Thursday, which revealed the extent of his injuries.

"I kinda heard he was battling a couple injuries, but still playing," Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. "There would have been a great buzz in the building [Friday] to have Iverson back. But, hey, we still gotta show up and play."

Iverson is averaging 15.6 points and 4.2 assists with the 76ers.

Speights Returns From Injury

Dec 17, 2009 8:01 PM

Marreese Speights returned to action on Wednesday night, playing 22 minutes and scoring 14 points.

"I'm still about a week off," Speights said, "but it feels great. My trainer says it's not about percentages, it's about how you feel. It feels pretty good. We'll see how it goes."

Speights doesn't expect his early success to come back to his game right away.

"Your timing, after being out for a month, your timing is off. It will probably take a couple of games to get back where I was. I don't know how many minutes [he'll play], coach just said it's limited minutes. It's pretty good, no swelling or anything like that."
