Turner Trying To 'Adapt' To NBA, Isn't Worried About Expectations

Dec 28, 2010 4:56 PM

Evan Turner hasn't yet lived up to expectations in his rookie season.

The 76ers took Turner with the second pick in this past June's NBA Draft, which brought along the expectation that he'd excel out of the gate.

He is averaging just 6.3 points per game on 38.4% shooting.

"I can't really say what's it's due to," Turner said of his struggles. "I'm just trying to adapt."

Turner isn't letting expectations hamper him.

"It's not about what people expect out of me," Turner said. "It's what I expect out of myself. I'm missing shots right now I usually make. Sometimes I'm not playing my best. I'm not thinking, 'Oh my God, I'm the No. 2 pick.' "

Philadelphia coach Doug Collins thinks Turner has been too hard on himself.

"Our guys have been very supportive," Collins said. "I think the coaching staff has been very supportive. We are trying to take the pressure away from him as much as possible. But still, when you walk up, put that hat on and you're the No. 2 pick, that's always going to be there."

Knicks Developing Backup Plans If They Can't Land Anthony

Dec 22, 2010 8:15 AM

The Knicks are still confident they can acquire Carmelo Anthony at some point this season, but they are beginning to put together backup plans.

Anthony has expressed the importance of signing a contract extension whenever he ends up later this season, which would eliminate New York's ability to sign him outright as a free agent this coming summer.

"They may go after Philadelphia's Andre Iguodala, who would seem to fit nicely in Mike D'Antoni's system," writes Chris Broussard of ESPN.com's True Hoop.

New York's "other scenario would potentially bring Cleveland's proven role players Anderson Varejao and Daniel "Boobie" Gibson to Madison Square Garden," Broussard added.

The Knicks are trying to determine if those options are better than what they could add on the free agent market.

Dec 21, 2010 8:17 AM

The Magic have inquired about New York's Ronny Turiaf and Philadelphia's Tony Battie as they hope to fill a void at center behind Dwight Howard.

Short-Handed Magic Lose To 76ers

Dec 19, 2010 7:38 AM

The Magic lost to the 76ers 97-89 on Saturday night in part because of their short-handed roster.

Orlando made a pair of blockbuster trades just hours before the game, leaving them with just eight players against Philadelphia.

"Make every excuse in the world," coach Stan Van Gundy said. "That's five straight games where we've done nothing to defend in the second half. So whatever the excuses are. I'm running out of them. I don't believe in any of them. Go out and guard somebody."

The Magic played with just seven players in the second half after guard Jason Williams injured his foot.

"It was tough. This was kind of like the first time something like that happened on my team," Orlando's Jameer Nelson said. "I just had to approach the game the same way."

Brackins Returns To 76ers After D-League Stint

Dec 13, 2010 8:11 AM

The 76ers have recalled Craig Brackins from the D-League after a five-game stint with the Springfield Armor.

Brackins averaged 17.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks with the Armor.

"It was a good experience," said Brackins. "It felt real good. I feel like I'm in better shape now, I got to play, work on my defense.

"My focal point was on the defensive end, just trying to get back, working on screen defense, on the ball, pick-and-roll. Just trying to work on stuff they wanted me to work on."

76ers Could Make Brand Available

Dec 12, 2010 11:27 AM

The 76ers may be dangling forward Elton Brand in potential trades, reports Bob Finnan of The News-Herald.

"There was talk about the Cavs trading for 76ers guard/forward Andre Iguodala. One source seems to indicate the Sixers might ask teams to take Elton Brand off their hands, too, in such a deal. That sounds like a deal breaker," Finnan wrote on Sunday.

Longtime 76ers' Beat Writer Jasner Passes Away At 68

Dec 4, 2010 2:05 PM

Phil Jasner, who was the 76ers' beat writer for the Philadelphia Daily News Since 1981, passed away from cancer at the age of 68 on Friday.

Jasner was well-known within the basketball community for his fairness and decency.

"I could tell at the age of 5," said his son, Andy. "He took me to a game with him and people started coming up to him to talk - security guards, everyone. It would go on for years like that, at the old Spectrum, whether it was an usher or Joe Fan in the third row. He was approachable that way. People liked him, and he treated everyone the same. He had time for everybody."

Jasner was a lifelong Philadelphian.

"He loved to talk about basketball, off the record, just talk hoops," said Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski, who knew Jasner for nearly four decades. "How many guys who had Stage 4 cancer would continue on like he did? He just loved it. He loved basketball. It was his outlet.

"We argued sometimes, had great debates. But he was fair and he was a character. Philadelphia basketball people are interesting people, and he was one of them."
