Bynum Far From Playing, Possible Comeback Slipping Away

Feb 24, 2013 6:51 PM

Andrew Bynum practiced with the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday for the first time this season, and despite all the optimism it brought, Doug Collins was adamant the center is not even close to returning.

"He looked like a guy who hadn't played in nine months," Collins said. "I don't think any bells and whistles should be sent off that he's close to playing."

Bynum, who has yet to play this season due to his ailing knees, has said he expects to make a comeback at some point. Collins made it clear, however, that any type of return seems to be slipping away.

"It's amazing seeing him standing out there; he distorted the whole practice," Collins said. "You get visions of what might've been ... He's said that he's going to play, but this season is slipping away. We've got 24 games after (this weekend). We're eight (games) under .500, and we've got to play the Miami Heat four times."

76ers Still Have Bynum As 'Plan A'

Feb 22, 2013 7:24 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers continue to see Andrew Bynum as the foundation piece of their franchise and hope to re-sign him in the offseason.

“We have Plan A and I think everyone knows what A stands for. And we have Plan B and we don’t know,” general manager Tony DiLeo said on Friday.

“If and when we get our complete team on the floor, then we can get some answers. We want to evaluate all of our players and in the summer make some decisions. We have some flexibility, we have a lot of free agents, we have a lot of good, young players and an All-Star point guard that we can build around. We have a lot of options and a lot of different ways we can go this summer.”

Bynum has missed the entire season and hasn't even practiced yet.

“When we talk about Plan A or Andrew, we all know what he can do on the court. He’s proven what he can do on the court,” DiLeo said. “It’s more of a medical issue to see if he can hold up."

Andrew Bynum Still Plans To 'Definitely' Play This Season

Feb 19, 2013 3:37 PM

Andrew Bynum said on Tuesday that he will "definitely" play for the Philadelphia 76ers at some point this season, confident about returning to practice within the next week or two.

"I'm focused on getting back and being right versus trying to rush," Bynum said.

"I don't think anyone's more upset than myself. I have the most to lose by not playing and I want to get back."

Bynum, who has yet to play this season with lingering knee issues, indicated he will have to deal with pain for the rest of his career.

"I think that after you've played in this league for some time, and logged a lot of games, I think you just wind up getting used to these sort of things," Bynum said. "And this is something I'll just have to get used to."

76ers Approached By Hawks On Josh Smith For Turner, Hawes Deal

Feb 19, 2013 12:14 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have been approached by the Atlanta Hawks about a trade of Josh Smith for Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes.

Smith is an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

The 76ers are not expected to do anything major before the deadline, however, as they continue to wait for Andrew Bynum to play.

"I don't see anything for us right now," Sixers coach Doug Collins said Monday. "If something happens for us right now, I think it would be something that would be very small. Tony [DiLeo, the general manager,] is on the phone, but I don't think there is anything major that is going to turn our season around. What would be major for us would be to get our guys healthy."

76ers Not Interested In Josh Smith Deal

Feb 14, 2013 11:09 AM

Despite reported interest in a trade that would send Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes to the Atlanta Hawks for Josh Smith, the Philadelphia 76ers are not contemplating such a deal, according to sources.

"Why would the Sixers be interested in making a deal for a player who can walk at the end of the season and leave them holding nothing but the bag?" one source said.

"I don't see where that makes sense for them."

76ers Unlikely To Make Major Trade, Waiting To Evaluate Team With Bynum

Feb 14, 2013 10:32 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers are unlikely to complete a trade before the Feb. 21 deadline that compromises their plans to evaluate how the team is built around Andrew Bynum.

Bynum has missed the entire season to date.

"I've talked with everyone throughout the league - made the phone calls, taken the phone calls," general manager Tony DiLeo said. "As I've said, we are not going to jeopardize our future to try to find something to help us short-term. We are looking to the future. We listen to what everyone proposes, and we propose some things, too. Things will probably heat up the closer you get to the deadline, they always do. We'll just have to see what happens.

"What's disappointing is that we haven't seen the team that we assembled for this season - not in one game, not in one practice. So we have no idea what this team could be."

Evan Turner has been the key member of the 76ers mentioned in trade rumors.
