Noel-Okafor Position Formula Remains A Mystery To 76ers

Dec 31, 2015 11:08 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers had Nerlens Noel and Jahlil Okafor switch roles in their 110-105 win over the Sacramento Kings.

Noel started at center with Okafor coming off the bench. Noel had 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting to go with nine rebounds, two assists and four steals.

Okafor added 10 points and 10 rebounds in what was his first game back after missing the previous two with a sprained right knee.

"I think that lineup really worked for us," Noel said of Wednesday’s lineup. "I think we were able to get up and down the court, and Jah brought his post-playing just rebounding especially. And I think this team can really go in a lot of different ways. We have a lot of different dynamics, especially with Jah coming off [the bench] and Ish running the point."

Jerian Grant started at power forward.

"For me, when we split up Jahlil and Nerlens, because of how they played, they didn’t go backwards in their numbers although they went backwards in their minutes," Brett Brown said. "Jah with more minutes would have scored more. But he ended up with a double-double."

Noel is more effective and comfortable as a center than a power forward. Meanwhile, Brown believes that Okafor is a natural power forward.

"The four-five, five-four you know it’s still a mystery right now," Brown said of deciding where to play Noel and Okafor. "It really is. And I think we are going to have this conversation throughout the whole year.

"Trying to grow those two guys is a challenge. So for me, it ends up more matchups than this overwhelming responsibility where it hurts the team. You know we want to win games. How I navigate that is a challenge."

Sam Hinkie wasn't permitted to interview Kristaps Porzingis during his predraft workout in Las Vegas. Porzingis was drafted fourth overall by the New York Knicks.

Jahlil Okafor's camp, meanwhile, was reportedly not in favor of him joining the Philadelphia 76ers.

There have been conflicting reports of whether D'Angelo Russell wanted to be drafted by the 76ers.

Sam Hinkie Admits Making Mistakes As GM Of 76ers

Dec 27, 2015 7:32 PM

Sam Hinkie admits he's made mistakes as general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers.

"I think our record speaks kindly to all that," he said. "But I think there are other things we could have handled differently."

Hinkie received a lot of criticism for not being available to the media during the Jahlil Okafor situation, leaving Brett Brown to be the spokesman.

The 76ers recently hired Jerry Colangelo to help the front office.

"He's had good counsel about team security, which I feel like we really had big strides on already, how to handle that differently," said Hinkie.

Hinkie says Colangelo has also helped with improving relationships with agents.

"Yeah, he's helped there, too," Hinkie said of Colangelo. "I think he's had lot of good advice and I had lots of questions there about ways in which we could do things better. And he's helped on that front already."

Carl Landry Makes 76ers' Debut, Embracing Leadership Role

Dec 24, 2015 11:26 AM

Carl Landry made his debut with the Philadelphia 76ers, scoring 10 points to go with five rebounds in 13 minutes.

Landry gives the 76ers another frontcourt option and also a veteran presence.

"It's fine (being anointed a leader) and I'm all right with it because I was young (once) and I looked up to older guys - Dikembe Mutombo, Steve Francis, Shane Battier," Landry said. "They really didn't have to say much. Just their presence every day, being around them, I could be just a sponge and soak up as much as I could. It definitely carried over and helped me to further my career.

"I think leaders are born. You can't just give somebody a title. You can't be like, 'You know what, you're not working for media today, you're a doctor.' You can't give somebody a job title. It just doesn't happen. If I'm a leader and that's the way they want to look at me, then I'm a leader. But you kind of have to be a leader to be in this league, a decade in, you have to. Maybe not a title but by example. Be a leader every day. Come in at the right time and (respect) the NBA dress code. Taking charges, doing things that it takes to play in this game for 10 years."

76ers' Young Players Support Idea Of Adding Veterans

Dec 23, 2015 5:18 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers' young players are backing the idea of adding veterans to the team.

Chuck Hayes and John Lucas III recently met with Brett Brown.

"I think that will be good for us to have any type of veterans," Nerlens Noel said. "I think [general manager] Sam [Hinkie] is looking into that a little more. . . . You know Chuck Hayes is a big man and I think it's going to help us."

Hayes and Lucas are both in their early 30s and are free agents.

"It's our job to find players. . . . We owe this city," Brown said. We owe this program. It's our best effort to find ways to move it forward. And that's part of it."

Adam Silver Says 76ers 'Resetting' Right Now, Denies Intervening

Dec 21, 2015 1:23 PM

Adam Silver was asked if he's okay with how the Philadelphia 76ers have run their franchise over the past three seasons under Sam Hinkie.

"I don’t want to answer that directly," said Silver. "As I said, there’s a marketplace of ideas and approaches that go into managing a franchise.

"Am I fan of that strategy? Put it this way: No. But does that mean that it’s not acceptable under the league rules? It doesn’t."

The 76ers recently hired Jerry Colangelo.

"There’s a resetting of sorts going on with the 76ers right now," said Silver. "And I think that ultimately may speak louder in the marketplace of teams than any tinkering we do to the draft lottery."

Silver reportedly received calls from other teams about what the 76ers were doing and that he intervened.

"Those reports are not correct. Josh Harris, who’s the principal owner of the 76ers, decided on his own that he needed to change course. He and I had many conversations along the way about the utility of the strategy that he was following. And he came to the conclusion once this season began, and he saw how his team was performing on the floor, that he needed to change his strategy.

"Other owners were not pressuring him at all. In fact, it’s a weird dynamic in the league that while all the owners would like to see teams well operated, other owners just want to win (laughter). And so nobody was calling me and saying go call the 76ers and tell them how to beat us."
