Joel Embiid Unhappy With How 76ers Handling Injury Updates

Feb 24, 2017 10:45 AM

Joel Embiid went through a full scrimmage Thursday and the Philadelphia 76ers' medical staff was pleased by his progress, but the team still said he'll miss their next four games.

The Sixers are targeting a March 3 return against the Knicks from what the team is calling a left knee contusion.

"Honestly, I think I can play, but I'm not ready to play," Embiid said. "There was no swelling yesterday. This morning when I came in, there was a little bit. I just finished practice and I feel good, but there's still a little bit of swelling. I've got to manage that."

Embiid has sat out the previous 11 games and admits he's not happy with how the 76ers have managed updates with the injury.

"I was told I was going to kind of miss two or three weeks, so I wasn't happy with the way it was handled," Embiid said. "I thought keeping my name out there was going to literally have people think about me all the time instead of just saying when I was going to be back. So I'm happy that they did that today and said that I’m out for the next four games."

Feb 24, 2017 3:47 PM

Ben Simmons will sit out the entire 16-17 season.

Simmons underwent surgery on a broken foot in training camp and a most recent scan shows the bone has not fully healed.

Simmons was the top overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft out of LSU. The 76ers also had Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid miss what would have been their rookie season with Embiid sitting out a second season before returning this year.

"It's not the way you want to start your career, but it happens. We're not excited about the news today," said Bryan Colangelo.

Andrew Bogut Allowed To Sign With Warriors Due To CBA Loophole

Feb 23, 2017 9:41 PM

Andrew Bogut is expected to agree upon a buyout with the Philadelphia 76ers and a loophole in the CBA will allow him to return to the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors traded Bogut to the Dallas Mavericks in the offseason to help clear salary cap space to sign Kevin Durant. The Mavericks traded Bogut to the 76ers in a package for Nerlens Noel at the deadline.

The reacquisition restriction rule only applies to the "last trade" and not all prior trades as well.

According to a source, the NBA is interpreting that the "last trade" designation technically applies to the Mavericks only.

It is not year clear if the Warriors will have interest in Bogut, who figures to receive interest from the Cavaliers and Celtics.

According to Marc Stein, the Warriors will consider all options but they have been focused on targeting guards or signing Briante Weber for the remainder of the season. The Warriors have Zaza Pachulia, David West and JaVale McGee on their depth chart for big man minutes, though they recently waived Anderson Varejao.

Mavs Acquire Nerlens Noel For 1st Rounder, Justin Anderson, Andrew Bogut

Feb 23, 2017 12:57 PM

The Dallas Mavericks have acquired Nerlens Noel from the Philadelphia 76ers for Andrew Bogut, Justin Anderson and a first round pick.

Noel will be a restricted free agent in the offseason. Dallas has long been interested in Noel and intend to re-sign him.

The pick from the Mavericks to Philadelphia will be protected 1-18 in June's draft. According to Zach Lowe, if the pick is not conveyed as a first rounder this year, it converts to a second rounder in 2017 and 2018.

The 76ers had been attempting to trade Jahlil Okafor as they balance out their roster.

Bogut is widely expected to be rerouted to another team via trade or to be bought out in time to sign with a playoff contender. Bogut is on an $11 million contract this season.

76ers Call Bulls On Availability Of Jimmy Butler

Feb 23, 2017 1:56 AM

The Philadelphia 76ers have reached out to the Chicago Bulls this week about the availability of Jimmy Butler. The Boston Celtics have also had interest in Butler in the past.

The Bulls have told teams they have no plans to trade Butler.

When the Bulls and Celtics discussed a Butler trade in June, they were seeking Jae Crowder, either Marcus Smart or Avery Bradley, as well as No. 3 and No. 16 picks in the 2016 draft.

Like the Celtics, the 76ers are capable of putting together an enticing package for Butler with their combination of young players and future draft pick assets.
