Joel Embiid Day To Day With Calf Tightness, To Be Re-Evaluated On Monday

Jul 26, 2020 1:07 PM

Joel Embiid will miss the Philadelphia 76ers' Sunday scrimmage due to tightness in his right calf.

Embiid is considered day to day, and will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Embiid began feeling tightness in Friday's scrimmage against the Grizzlies.

"There is always frustration, selfish frustration, and I know frustration, at times, for Joel. But initially, [we're] just trying to be smart with everything and move on," said Brett Brown.

Brown did not address whether Embiid would miss any seeding games.

Brett Brown Says Ben Simmons Made 'Philosophical, Internal Decision' To Shoot 3s

Jul 25, 2020 1:21 AM

Brett Brown said that Ben Simmons made an "internal decision" to shoot more 3-pointers following the Philadelphia 76ers' 90-83 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Simmons went 1-2 from the 3-point line.

"I feel like his spirit, his mindset coming down here, him willingly finding space and finding 3s, that has been a paradigm shift. That has been an attitudinal change, a philosophical, internal decision that he has made, because I have just seen a player that is cocky and just playing and when the game says you should shoot because nobody is on you, he does, and he doesn't blink and his teammates love it and so does his head coach," said Brown.

Simmons, who was played at power forward, added that he enjoyed working out of that position.

"I can guard 1-5, I can play everywhere, but catching in those positions, I love those spots. I work on those spots, and my footwork there. I just got to keep working and taking what's given to us."

76ers 'Exclusively' Using Ben Simmons At Power Forward

Jul 13, 2020 9:23 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have been playing Ben Simmons "exclusively" at power forward during practices within the bubble.

"He's so dynamic," Brown said on a conference call with reporters. "Let's just talk about running. There's nobody faster in the NBA. So to always have the ball and dribble it up against five guys ... to do that dilutes some of his potent weapons.

"So, watching him fly up the floor, watching him and Joel [Embiid] play off each other, has been a really good look. I think they've been fantastic together."

By playing Simmons at power forward, the 76ers will need to bring Al Horford off the bench and will likely replace him in the starting lineup with Shake Milton.

Brown said the decision to initially play Simmons at point guard was necessitated by the fact they didn't have viable other options.

"You take somebody and say, 'Here's the ball.' It's not like Ben came in and we had Chris Paul on the team or Damian Lillard on the team," Brown said. "We were young, and really not that good, so it was my decision, 'You take the ball. We're going to make you the point guard.' It's not like there was an established point guard that he had to bump out.

"[And] how has he responded to that? Like a star. Just a mature, 'Whatever it's going to take to get this team to be the best it can be with the pieces that we have that can be, I don't know, just designed into a smooth thing' ... that is one of the pieces he has to offer.

"He's been great accepting that, and really killing it in the environment that I just said."

Joel Embiid Says He's 'Capable Of Carrying The Team' On Offense

Jul 8, 2020 1:42 AM

Joel Embiid addressed the Philadelphia 76ers' offensive struggles ahead of the Orlando restart, saying that the offense should run through him.

"I know what I'm capable of, and I know what my teammates think of me. I know I'm capable of carrying the team, so it's all about me being assertive. If I feel like I'm not getting the ball, I just got to talk to them and do what I have to do. ... I should never be in a position to complain about getting the ball, just because of who I am. I believe I can carry the team, and I believe being able to do that, I just got to take matters into my own hands," said Embiid.

The Sixers currently average 109.6 points per game, ranking 21st in the league.

Embiid also addressed his fit with Al Horford, saying that the duo needed to be surrounded by shooters.

"At times it could be better, but then again, everybody on the court has a job, and with that type of pairing you have to have shooters around. ... Especially when you got two inside presence like me and Al. He can post up, I can post up, and then around you've got to be able to have guys that are willing to shoot and that are going to shoot the ball. I think that's what needs to happen but I don't think that's a problem."

Mike Scott Describes NBA's Approved Jersey Message Plan As 'Terrible'

Jul 6, 2020 2:34 PM

Mike Scott criticized the NBA's plan of giving players a list of approved messages to wear on their jerseys to promote social justice.

"They gave us some names and phrases to put on the back of jerseys," said Scott. "That was terrible. It was just a bad miss, a bad choice," Scott said Monday during a conference call with reporters. "They didn't give players a chance to voice our opinions on it; they just gave us a list to pick from. So that was bad, that was terrible.

"I'm all about just doing, instead of saying and posting, or putting something on the back of your jersey. I don't think that's going to stop anything, you know?"

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association had agreed to the following list of suggested messages: Black Lives Matter; Say Their Names; Vote; I Can't Breathe; Justice; Peace; Equality; Freedom; Enough; Power to the People; Justice Now; Say Her Name; Sí Se Puede (Yes We Can); Liberation; See Us; Hear Us; Respect Us; Love Us; Listen; Listen to Us; Stand Up; Ally; Anti-Racist; I Am A Man; Speak Up; How Many More; Group Economics; Education Reform; and Mentor.

Ben Simmons 'Effectively 100 Percent' Recovered From Back Injury

Jul 1, 2020 3:44 PM

Ben Simmons has fully recovered from his back injury suffered on Feb. 22nd.

"He's good to go. He's put in a tremendous amount of work for me to be able to confidently say that," Brett Brown said on a conference call with reporters Wednesday afternoon.

"As you search for silver linings with this pandemic and the way things have shaped up, it would be hard-pressed for me to find something more obvious than this: It's enabled Ben to reclaim his health. He's good to go, and we look forward to watching him with what I'm told is effectively 100 percent health."

It was unclear when Simmons would have been cleared to return had the season not been suspended.
