Sixers Forfeit 2nd Round Picks In 2023, 2024 Due To Tampering

Oct 31, 2022 5:02 PM

The NBA announced that the Philadelphia 76ers violated league rules governing the timing of this season’s free agency discussions and that the league has rescinded Philadelphia’s second-round pick in each of the 2023 and 2024 Drafts.

The rescindment of two Draft picks reflected findings, following an investigation, that the 76ers engaged in free agency discussions involving two players (P.J. Tucker and Danuel House, Jr.) prior to the date when such discussions were permitted.

The team fully cooperated with the investigation.

76ers Exercise 23-24 Options On Tyrese Maxey, Jaden Springer

Oct 30, 2022 10:09 PM

The Philadelphia 76ers have exercised the fourth-year contract option for Tyrese Maxey and the third-year contract option for Jaden Springer, both set to take effect for the 2023-24 season.

Maxey, now in his third professional season, holds career averages of 13.7 points (.480 FG, .403 3FG), 2.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 26.9 minutes in 143 games (89 starts). The Texas native played in 75 games (74 starts) in his second NBA season in 2021-22, upping his scoring average from 8.0 to 17.5 while shooting .485 from the floor. His points-per-game increase ranked as the largest among second-year players last season, while his .427 mark from three-point range was third in the NBA. A 2022 Rising Stars selection, Maxey reached the 20-point mark on 25 occasions, including five games of 30-plus points.

Originally selected by the 76ers with the No. 21 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Maxey, 21, has averaged 22.6 points on .504 shooting (.468 3FG), 3.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals in seven games (all starts) this season. He set career highs in both points (44) and three-point field goals (nine) at Toronto on Oct. 28, becoming just the second player in 76ers franchise history to tally 40-plus points prior to the age of 22 (Iverson, five times).

Springer, 20, has tallied seven points on 3-of-4 shooting in four career appearances for the 76ers. The No. 28 overall selection of the 2021 NBA Draft has competed in 19 career G League games (18 starts) for the Delaware Blue Coats, averaging 14.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 26.8 minutes per contest. Springer helped lead Delaware to its second consecutive appearance in the G League Finals.

Tyrese Maxey After Career-High 44 Points: 'I Just Know How Good We Can Be'

Oct 29, 2022 1:06 AM

Tyrese Maxey scored a career-high 44 points as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Toronto Raptors 112-90 on Friday night without Joel Embiid.

"I just know how good we can be, I know how talented we are, but we've got to match our talent with the energy that we play with, and defensive tenacity.

"Tonight we knew it was going to be extremely hard without Joel. That made guys step up, that made guys do things they don't normally do," said Maxey.

Maxey shot 15-of-20 from the field, including 9-of-12 from the three-point line.

Embiid missed the game due to a sore right knee.

Doc Rivers added that the Sixers still have some ways to go to reaching their potential.

We're not close to where we want to be. And we're going to have some bumps early and we know that. But once we get there, we're going to be a really good basketball team," said Rivers.

Joel Embiid Battled Plantar Fasciitis Before Training Camp

Oct 23, 2022 8:21 AM

Joel Embiid acknowledged that his conditioning isn't where it needs to be to start the NBA season. Embiid said that is because he was fighting plantar fasciitis over the summer. That left the Sixers star unable to do any basketball work for the two months leading up to the start of training camp.

"Coming into training camp I hadn't done anything in like two months, so it really slowed me down," Embiid said. "Still trying to work my way back and hopefully everything goes back to normal."

76ers coach Doc Rivers said that his All-Star center is currently pain free, but that it clearly impacted Embiid's training and conditioning. When Embiid wrapped up his media availability, he said he's "fine", as far as having any lingering foot pain.

Multiple Sixers Execs Urged Bryan Colangelo To Look Closer At Ball, Tatum Before Selecting Fultz

Oct 17, 2022 1:11 PM

Bryan Colangelo zeroed in on Markelle Fultz during the 2017 NBA draft and traded up from No. 3 with the Boston Celtics to select him.

According to multiple former executives with the Philadelphia 76ers tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer that front office members urged Colangelo to take a second look at selecting either Lonzo Ball or Jayson Tatum.

Colangelo refused and selected Fultz, who ended up having an issue with his shoulder that impacted his shooting.

Fultz didn't make his debut with the Sixers until March of the 17-18 season.

The Sixers traded Fultz to the Orlando Magic in February 2019.

Oct 17, 2022 1:05 PM

When the Houston Rockets looked for a replacement for Carroll Dawson to run their front office in 2006, Les Alexander wanted a big name.

Alexander initially tried to lure Billy Beane from the Oakland Athletics and then offered the job to Jay Bilas, but the two sides couldn't agree on contract terms.

Alexander eventually decided on Morey, who had a dual role with the Boston Celtics on the business and basketball side.

When Morey interviewed with Alexander, he landed in Houston at 9:00 AM and had a job offer by 2:00 PM after a long lunch discussing a variety of topics.

Alexander sold the Rockets to Tilman Fertitta in 2017 and Morey departed the franchise in 2020.
