Suns Trade Archibald to Orlando

Dec 26, 2003 11:16 PM

PHOENIX (AP) Forward Robert Archibald was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Orlando Magic on Friday for a conditional 2005 second-round draft pick, the second deal between the teams in three days.

The 6-foot-11 Archibald, who was acquired from Memphis on Sept. 30, appeared in only one game for the Suns, scoring one point.

On Tuesday, Phoenix acquired forward Donnell Harvey from Orlando for a second-round draft pick next year.

Magic acquire Archibald; waive Williams

Dec 26, 2003 5:21 PM

The Orlando Magic and Phoenix have made their second trade is less than two weeks, acquiring forward Robert Archibald for a 2005 conditional second-round pick.

To make room on the roster for Archibald, the Magic waived forward Monty Williams, who they acquired on Tuesday in a swap of second-round picks with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Ironically, RealGM first reported on Sunday that Archibald would be included in the earlier deal deal between the two teams that sent Donnell Harvey to Phoenix for a 2004 second-round pick.

Orlando used a $1.4 Disabled Players' Exception that they received for injured forward Pat Garrity to acquire Archibald.

Harvey deal made without Archibald

The Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns have finally completed their rumored trade but without forward Robert Archibald.

Instead, the deal only sends a second-round pick to the Magic for Harvey.

To make room on the roster for Harvey, the Suns placed Archibald on the injured list with the flu.

Harvey is expected to be in uniform for the Suns' game tonight at Seattle.

Toronto to get in on Harvey deal?

Dec 23, 2003 9:12 AM

On Sunday, we first reported that Magic forward Donnell Harvey would be traded to the Phoenix Suns inexchange for forward Robert Archibald and Phoenix's 2004 second-round pick.

Today, the swap will take place but the Toronto Raptors are rumored to be trying to acquire Archibald from Orlando. It is not clear what they are offering but if they are offering anything, it's probably a second-round pick.

The trade was delayed until today because Harvey signed with the Magic on Sept. 23 and couldn't be traded for three months.

Deal close to send Harvey to Phoenix

Dec 23, 2003 2:00 AM

PHOENIX (AP) The Phoenix Suns are close to a trade that would bring forward Donnell Harvey from the Orlando Magic.

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni confirmed Monday night that the deal was in the works.

``Tomorrow it's supposed to be official,'' D'Antoni said from his Seattle hotel room. ``It looks like we've got him.''

Harvey will be in Seattle for a physical Tuesday, D'Antoni said. He could be in uniform for the Suns' game against the SuperSonics on Tuesday night.

D'Antoni said he was not sure what Orlando would get in the trade. The Arizona Republic said on its Web site that Orlando would receive seldom-used forward Robert Archibald and a conditional second-round pick.

But other reports said only a second-round pick would be going to the Magic.

Harvey averaged 4.1 points and 3 rebounds for Orlando. The deal cannot be made official until Tuesday because Harvey signed with the Magic as a free agent on Sept. 23. Under NBA rules, he cannot be traded for three months after that date.

The 6-foot-8 forward would bolster a depleted Phoenix roster. The Suns are without Amare Stoudemire perhaps until mid-January because of a sprained ankle. Rookie forward Zarko Cabarkapa will be sidelined even longer with a broken wrist.

Source: Harvey dealt to Phoenix for Archibald, second rounder

Dec 21, 2003 4:29 PM

RealGM has learned from a source that forward Donnell Harvey has indeed been traded to the Phoenix Suns inexchange for center Robert Archibald and Phoenix's 2004 second-round pick.

The Magic plan on eventually sending this pick to the Atlanta Hawks to pay off a second-round pick that is due this year from a 2000 trade that sent guard Anthony Johnson to the Orlando Magic.

Because of this, Orlando can now keep their second-round pick this year, which figures to be a high one.

The source says that Harvey wasn't in condition and didn't work on improving his game. Those are said to be the reasons for the trade.

The trade cannot happen until Tuesday though because Harvey signed with the Magic on Sept 23rd and under league rules cannot be traded for 90 days.

We first broke this story yesterday afternoon and RealGM's Howard Mass followed it throughout the evening.

During the Orlando Magic and Toronto Raptors game yesterday afternoon, word of Harvey getting dealt broke when Magic announcer David Steele told the viewing audience that Magic forward Donnell Harvey did not make the trip with the team because a trade involving him is pending.

We then received word that Suns center Robert Archibald didn't accompany his team to Los Angeles for their game against the Lakers.

Coincidently, we learned via the RealGM trade checker that if the two were to be swapped for one another, the trade would work under salary cap and CBA rules. (Trade ID:1354328).

There was no word from either side on where the other was headed but we believed that it was very possible that Harvey and Archibald had been swapped for each other with prehaps a second-round draft pick also going Orlando's way.

Which coach has East's hottest team? Stan's the man

Dec 17, 2003 5:00 AM

There aren't many teams playing better than the Miami Heat. In fact, there's only one.

Miami won its fourth in a row Tuesday night behind 32 points from rookie Dwyane Wade, defeating the Atlanta Hawks 97-79. It's the first four-game winning streak in nearly two years for the Heat, whose victory string is the league's second-longest behind San Antonio's seven.

``Four wins is not enough, hopefully we can take it to five,'' said Lamar Odom, who scored 19 points and grabbed all 12 of his rebounds on the defensive end.

The turnaround by the Heat has been surprising for a team that lost coach Pat Riley on the eve of the season and proceeded to drop its first seven games. Miami, which also defeated Phoenix, Memphis and Toronto during its winning streak, goes for five in a row Wednesday night at Philadelphia.

Elsewhere, Memphis topped Sacramento 105-100, Denver downed New Orleans 116-94, Phoenix edged Seattle 92-91 in overtime, Milwaukee beat Portland 106-99, Minnesota defeated Houston 92-75, Washington downed Utah 91-87, Golden State topped New York 104-86 and Chicago beat Orlando 102-88.

Wade shot 15-for-22 with nine assists, while Odom had his fourth straight double-double. Eddie Jones added 22 points.

Odom's 3-pointer with 6:54 remaining in the third quarter put the Heat ahead 65-55. The Hawks never got their deficit into single digits the rest of the way.

``The most remarkable thing about the game is that we won it in the third quarter,'' Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. ``We are a team that struggles to score and when a game goes well for you offensively, you tend to play poor defense. When we stepped up our defensive intensity in the third quarter, the game turned in our favor.''

Atlanta, led by Shareef Abdur-Rahim's 16 points, has lost four in a row and eight of nine.

Miami never trailed after Butler's layup late in the first quarter made it 21-19. Wade scored 19 points in the first half.

``I am getting more confident and my teammates are getting more confident in me,'' Wade said. ``The floor is opening up more because so many guys are playing well.''

Grizzlies 105, Kings 100

At Memphis, Pau Gasol scored 22 points and Shane Battier keyed a fourth-quarter rally with 11 points.

Six Memphis players scored in double figures as the Grizzlies snapped Sacramento's four-game winning streak and beat the Kings for the first time since November, 2001.

The teams were tied at 83 with just under eight minutes left before Memphis went on a 7-1 run for a 90-84 lead with 5:15 remaining. Sacramento got within 94-93 on a drive by Brad Miller with 3:15 remaining, but never any closer.

Nuggets 116, Hornets 94

At Denver, Carmelo Anthony had 21 points and Voshon Lenard added 19, improving the Nuggets' home record to 10-2.

Nene had his sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Marcus Camby had 14 points and 12 rebounds for his third straight double-double.

Baron Davis had 25 points on 9-for-18 shooting as New Orleans matched its longest losing streak of the season _ two games.

Suns 92, SuperSonics 91, OT

At Phoenix, Shawn Marion dunked off an inbounds pass from Penny Hardaway with 5.6 seconds to go to cap a low-scoring overtime _ just five points combined.

Marion had 19 points and 14 rebounds, helping the Suns snap a six-game losing streak to win for the first time in four games under coach Mike D'Antoni.

Bucks 106, Trail Blazers 99

At Portland, Tim Thomas had 23 points and six assists and Michael Redd added 22 points for the Bucks, who shot 58.2 percent. Milwaukee took over with an 11-0 run that made it 74-63.

Timberwolves 92, Rockets 75

At Minneapolis, Sam Cassell scored 25 points and Kevin Garnett had 19 points and 13 rebounds. Latrell Sprewell added 14 points for the Timberwolves, who've won three straight and improved to 6-1 in December.

Wizards 91, Jazz 87

At Washington, Larry Hughes scored 20 of his season-high 38 points in the fourth quarter, and Etan Thomas blocked a potential game-tying layup by Andrei Kirilenko. The victory broke the Wizards' four-game losing streak.

Warriors 104, Knicks 86

At New York, Jason Richardson scored 26 points in a lopsided game that left Knicks fans booing. The Warriors snapped a two-game losing streak by running all over the Knicks, scoring 23 fast-break points and never being threatened in the second half.

Bulls 102, Magic 88

At Chicago, Kendall Gill scored 27 of his season-high 29 points in the second half when he made 12 of 13 shots. The Bulls have won two straight for the first time this season.

Suns fire coach Frank Johnson

Dec 10, 2003 8:00 PM

PHOENIX (AP) Frank Johnson was fired on Wednesday as coach of the Phoenix Suns, a young team with high expectations that is off to an 8-13 start and has lost six of its last seven games.

The Suns promoted lead assistant Mike D'Antoni, a star player and highly successful coach in Italy who coached the Denver Nuggets in the lockout-shortened 1998-99 season.

``There's been something amiss all year, in my opinion,'' Suns owner Jerry Colangelo said. ``The more I saw on the floor, the more I disliked what I saw as it related to body language, communication or lack of same.''

D'Antoni, under contract through next season, promised to immediately try to boost the tempo, beginning with the next game Thursday night at home against New Orleans.

``It should be exciting the first couple of nights. Balls should be flying around. We'll try not to hurt anybody,'' D'Antoni said. ``But hopefully it will make it exciting, anyway.''

Bryan Colangelo, the owner's son and president of the Suns' basketball operations, accompanied the team on its four-game trip to the East. He watched Phoenix blow a 22-point early lead in Orlando on Monday night and lose to a Magic team that had dropped 19 straight.

On Tuesday night, the Suns looked unmotivated in a 92-72 loss at Miami.

On the long plane ride home, the younger Colangelo said, he began seriously thinking about a coaching change.

``Reflecting back to a few things that I was observing on the road trip, and just reflecting back over the past several weeks and months, it became pretty apparent,'' he said.

Johnson spent 10 years in the Suns organization as a player, community relations official and coach. Known as ``Fourth-Quarter Frank'' for his shooting ability, he was a key reserve on the 1993 team that reached the NBA Finals.

Johnson replaced Scott Skiles as the Suns' head coach late in the 2001-02 season, going 11-20 the rest of the way.

Last season, Johnson guided the team to a 44-38 record and a surprising playoff berth. The Suns _ led by the athletic trio of Stephon Marbury, Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion _ played San Antonio tough in the first round but lost to the eventual NBA champions.

This year's season began with high expectations, but it was obvious that last year's chemistry had, for the most part, disappeared.

``Everybody's got to be in the trench together and it just didn't seem that way,'' Jerry Colangelo said. ``That's not pointing fingers at anyone, but the bottom line was something's got to change.''

Injuries to Stoudemire and first-round draft pick Zarko Cabarkapa added to the team's woes. Stoudemire is out for about four more weeks with an ankle injury. Cabarkapa will be sidelined for five to seven weeks with a broken wrist.

But D'Antoni, who expressed admiration of Johnson's work and accepted part of the blame for the team's failures, said the Suns can be much better.

``It just wasn't working out for whatever reason,'' D'Antoni said. ``It is a change, and it does put the onus back on the players, and they understand that.''

D'Antoni, 52, has dual citizenship in Italy and the United States. A star point guard at Marshall, he played one season for the Kansas City-Omaha Kings before spending 13 seasons with Milan of the Italian League.

He led the team to five Italian League titles and two Cups of Europe championships. D'Antoni coached Benetton Treviso of the Italian League from 1994-97, capturing the Cup of Europe title in 1995 and the Italian League crown in 1997. He returned to coach Benetton again in 2001.

D'Antoni, whose Denver team went 14-36 in 1998-99 season, wants to restore some energy to the Suns.

``We've got to get some excitement into the arena,'' he said. ``Sometimes this year, it felt kind of down, like we were waiting to let the cannon fall on our head, like `When are we going to mess up so people can talk bad about us?'''

He wants to give the players freedom to run.

``We're getting up and down,'' D'Antoni said. ``It will be some adjusting and there will be some bad shots going up. I'm going to tell you that right now. It will take awhile to get that out of their system. But I'm not going to pull the reins back on them.''
