Gentry Confident Of Retaining Nash, Wants Suns To Add Closer

May 30, 2012 10:22 AM

Alvin Gentry is confident that the Suns’ two-time MVP isn't getting away.

Gentry said the Suns could use a late-game scorer to complement Nash.

"I feel good about it," Gentry said about retaining Nash. "We just need a player we can throw the ball to at the end of the game, who can get to the foul line, get us a basket or make the right play.

"I think it's a little unfair for me to ask Steve Nash to do that night in and night out, not just for 66 games, but for 82 games next year. If we're fortunate enough to have Steve back, and we're going to do everything we possibly can to do that, I just think he needs some help."

Gentry said the Suns will continue to work to upgrade their roster.

"We're obviously going to have to upgrade our talent," Gentry said. "We have to continue to get improvement out of our young players like Markieff (Morris). I think Jared Dudley has made improvements. We have to get Robin (Lopez) to the point where he's consistently playing (well). I don't think we're a championship team. But I definitely think with the addition of a couple of guys here and there in free agency, we can get back in the mix and be a factor, for sure."

Suns Could Amnesty Childress

May 26, 2012 10:55 AM

Josh Childress could be amnestied by the Suns this offseason in order to create additional cap space.

Childress is owed $21 million on his contract.

The future of Childress is tied closely to Grant Hill, who is a free agent and has undergone two surgeries since September.

"I can't control the DNPs," Childress said on exit day. "That's something I'm going to work very hard to not let happen again."

Suns Want More Effort, Energy From Markieff Morris

May 18, 2012 10:42 PM

Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby expects more from Markieff Morris next season.

“He’s highly skilled,” Babby said. “He’s got to turn his motor up and have a certain intensity. He gave us a toughness that we don’t get from anybody else and that’s good. He’s got to learn the pace of a NBA season and he’s got to bring it every single night with an intensity. He got tired, so that was part of it.

“He’s got to develop, obviously, from a skill standpoint and physical standpoint. All those things will happen. He’s going to be a good player. He already is pretty good. I think he’s going to be a part of this team for a long, long time.”

Morris struggled with foul trouble throughout the season, averaging 7.0 fouls per 48 minutes.

“I definitely could have done a lot better,” Morris said after the season. “I fouled too much. It just comes with getting stronger and learning the game more. I was playing with my hands too much and trying to be too aggressive on defense.”

Nash Becomes GM Of Canada Basketball

May 8, 2012 4:10 PM

Steve Nash has agreed to become the general manager of the senior men's national team for Canada Basketball.

"Obviously I love the program," Nash told ESPN.com. "It was a huge part of my development as a player. Going to the Olympics (in 2000) was the best experience of my career.

"So if I can help other Canadians experience that, it would be pretty amazing. I want to try to lend my hand to help develop our system and change the image and reputation of this country internationally and be a resource for as many of our good, young kids as possible."

Nash will have a strong say in the hiring of Canada's next coach.

Jay Triano is widely considered to be the leading favorite to become the next head coach.

Canada has Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph already in the program, while Anthony Bennett and Andrew Wiggins are in the pipeline.
