Suns Might Want Marcin Gortat Part Of Franchise's Future

Jun 28, 2013 8:41 PM

One day after the Phoenix Suns drafted Alex Len with the fifth pick in the NBA draft, Marcin Gortat was assured by the organization that it has no plan to trade him – for now – and might want to make him part of the future, his agent Guy Zucker told RealGM.

After the draft, Gortat had understood the Suns’ clear transition into retooling the roster, leading to belief a trade would be beneficial to both sides. Yet, Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said Thursday that Gortat would fill a mentoring role for Len.

“It’s clear they are in a rebuild and they drafted a center, so [a trade] would make sense, but for now they want to hold onto him,” Zucker said Friday afternoon. “As with everything in the league, it should be stated: As of today.”

Throughout most of the season, Gortat had been in trade speculation and made clear his desire to be a contributor on a winning team.

Gortat, 29, has one season left on his contract and could start negotiations on an extension in July. He has established himself as a double-double center over the past three years, enjoying a career season with Steve Nash two seasons ago. Gortat averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 61 games last season.

McDonough: Suns Would Consider Stashing Draft Pick Overseas

Jun 21, 2013 2:34 PM

Ryan McDonough has considered the possibility of drafting and stashing a player overseas.

The Suns worked out Brazilian power forward Augusto Lima on Thursday.

“My preference would be to bring at least two guys to play right away out of our three picks,” McDonough said. “But if you think a guy is going to be a good player and he’s either locked in contractually or you see some areas he could develop over the next year or two, I certainly would consider drafting a guy and leaving him overseas for a year or two.”

Phoenix has the fifth, 30th and 57th overall picks in the upcoming draft.

Suns May Be Targeting Post Player In Draft

Jun 14, 2013 9:46 PM

The Phoenix Suns may be targeting a post player in the NBA draft.

Jeff Hornacek recently hired Mark West and Roy Rogers to be part of his staff, suggesting a commitment to developmental work with young post players.

"Having two bigs coaches is kind of interesting in terms of where they might be going in the draft," one league personnel executive said.

Ryan McDonough suggested the Suns will avoid using the fifth and 30th picks on players who occupy similar areas of the floor.

Suns Have Explored Adding Additional First Round Pick

Jun 8, 2013 11:44 AM

The Phoenix Suns have investigated the possibility of another first-round pick beyond their No. 5 and No. 30 slots.

“We’ve talked to a few teams about getting in the draft at different ranges,” Ryan McDonough said. “We have good assets to do that. We have to evaluate all of these guys, figure out where they’re going to go. And then if we can get in at a particular range where a guy is undervalued, we’ll try to get in and get him there.”

McDonough worked out six players on Friday, including C.J. Leslie, who could be on the board when it’s time for the Suns to make their second selection.

“Good athlete, very long, can do some nice things attacking from the elbow,” McDonough said. “It (the NBA) is becoming more positionless. For a guy with C.J.’s size and length and athletic ability, to be able to defend some of these really athletic 3s (small forwards) with some size, that would be intriguing to a guy like me.”

Suns Not Concerned About Shabazz Muhammad's Background

Jun 6, 2013 1:34 PM

Ryan McDonough has done extensive background research on Shabazz Muhammad.

“He checked out very well,” McDonough said. “I think a lot of the perception of Shabazz is unfair based on the information we’ve gathered.

“I think he’s one of hardest workers in the draft.”

Muhammad worked out for the Suns on Wednesday, and was joined by Victor Oladipo and Ben McLemore.

The Suns have the fifth overall pick in the draft.

“This was a really talented group,” McDonough said. “We had a bunch of guys in the gym who I think will end up in the lottery.”
