DPE's For Lakers And Blazers Expire Friday

Dec 29, 2006 12:54 PM

Disabled Player Exceptions (DPE) that were granted by the NBA League Office to the Lakers and Blazers this month will expire on Friday.

DPE?s allow teams to acquire a single player via a trade or free agent signing when they have lost a player for the season due to medical reasons.

The Lakers were granted a $2.1 million exception due to an ankle injury that has forced Chris Mihm to miss the entire season.

The Blazers received a DPE just under $4 million after losing Darius Miles for the season with microfracture surgery.

No D-League Stint For Aldridge

Dec 28, 2006 2:59 AM

Rookie LaMarcus Aldridge's minutes have plummeted recently, and he received his first DNP-CD -- did not play, coach's decision -- Friday. Aldridge started seven games when Przybilla was injured, but he has been the odd man out after Przybilla and other injured players returned, playing a total of 11 minutes the last four games.

McMillan, however, said there has been no discussion about sending Aldridge to Anaheim for a stint with the Blazers' NBA Development League affiliate, as the Blazers did with Martell Webster last season.

"I think it will benefit him more playing and practicing here," McMillan said. "Martell was an 18-year-old kid coming into the pros, not having any college experience. LaMarcus has played in some big games in college."

Magloire Seeking Bigger Role With Blazers

Dec 28, 2006 2:54 AM

Jamaal Magloire stood after practice, ice bags on his left hand and both knees, and pondered the question.

Are you comfortable with your role on the Trail Blazers?

"That's a good question," he said.

Then he paused.

After all, Magloire is a veteran center, a one-time All-Star who is coming off the bench at 28, an age when a player should be in his prime. But Magloire, who came to the Blazers in an off-season trade with Milwaukee, also is a key part of the Blazers' second team. This was a delicate answer.

He continued: "I know I can play in this league, and I've shown over the last seven years of my career that I can play in this league. I know in my heart that I can start. I've shown consistency both on the offensive and defensive ends. But I've just got to deal with whatever coach gives me."

What coach Nate McMillan has given him is an average of 18 minutes per game, during which he has averaged 5.6 points and 5.4 rebounds. Magloire, who played in the 2004 All-Star Game when he was with New Orleans, acknowledges the season has been a test of patience.

Blazers' Randolph Suffers Mild Sprain

Dec 20, 2006 5:56 AM

Just as the Portland Trail Blazers welcomed rookie Brandon Roy back from a heel injury, leading scorer Zach Randolph showed up on crutches.

Randolph told The Oregonian he woke up Monday morning and was surprised by pain on the top of his right foot. When he stood to get out of bed, the pain in the foot was so sharp, he fell to the floor. He was examined by a team doctor, who put him on crutches.

Coach Nate McMillian termed it a "mild sprain" in his right foot.

Nuggets Working On A Three-Way?

Dec 14, 2006 5:50 AM

A source that spoke with David Aldridge said Wednesday that the Nuggets might be trying to involve a third team, the Portland Trail Blazers, in an Allen Iverson deal.

The proposed trade would send forward Nene to the Trail Blazers, who then would ship center Jamaal Magloire to the Sixers.

The Nuggets would send another player, possibly former Sixer Joe Smith, to the Sixers, and the Sixers would direct Iverson to Denver.

Roy Out At Least One More Week

Dec 8, 2006 12:29 AM

Blazers rookie Brandon Roy will not be back in the lineup until after Portland's road trip. He hopes to play against the Clippers on Dec. 15.

Roy's problems with his heel became apparent when he was held out of a game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 8.

An MRI revealed an impingement in his left heel bone but no major damage. As a precaution, he wore a protective boot for a couple of weeks until an MRI and a CT scan late last week showed improvement.

The boot came off and Roy has been doing light workouts at the team's Tualatin practice facility.

"We're still trying to take this as slow as possible because right now we don't want to do surgery. We want it to get enough rest time," Roy said.

Roy To Miss 6-Game Trip

Dec 2, 2006 9:52 AM

Rookie guard Brandon Roy will not make the Trail Blazers' six-game trip that begins next week, the team decided Friday. That was the bad news for the Blazers.

The good news was that Roy, who had a magnetic resonance imaging Friday, removed the boot he has been wearing for more than three weeks and said he hopes to play when the Blazers return from the stretch of road games.

"The scan showed improvement from the last one," said Roy, who missed his 12th game Friday because of pain in his left heel.
