Jones Comes Home In Swap With Toronto

Feb 22, 2007 5:59 PM

The Portland Trail Blazers today acquired guard/forward Fred Jones, a former Oregon Duck, and future considerations from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Juan Dixon. As part of the trade, Jones has agreed not to exercise the player option year of his contract, meaning his current deal will expire at the end of the 2007-08 season.

?It?s always fun to add such a talented player with such strong local connections to our roster?, said Trail Blazers President/General Manager Steve Patterson. ?Fred is a versatile athlete with high character and a great track record of community involvement and we think he fits perfectly into the culture we?ve been cultivating here in Portland.?

Jones has played in 39 games this season with nine starts and is averaging 7.6 points and 1.4 assists per game. He joined the Raptors this past summer as a free agent after four seasons with the Indiana Pacers, who drafted Jones in the first round (14th overall pick) in the 2002 NBA Draft, three spots ahead of Dixon that year.

Blazers Contain Arenas In Easy Win

Feb 11, 2007 7:50 PM

Gilbert Arenas vowed to score 50 points against Portland.

He wasn't even close as the Washington Wizards fell to the Trail Blazers 94-73 on Sunday.

Arenas had made the promise in retaliation for Portland coach Nate McMillan's involvement with Arenas being left off the U.S. national team last summer. The guard, who is averaging 29.4 points, shot 3-for-15 from the field, including 0-for-8 on 3-pointers. He finished with nine points.

"Thats like a dude saying he's going to punch you in your face," said Jarrett Jack, who guarded Arenas for most of the game. "With a guy like him, Kobe or LeBron, the easy way to guard him is don't let him get the ball back when he passes it. We did a good job of trying to deny him when he was one pass away, and my big guys did a great job of helping me whenever he got by me."

Two days before what Gilbert Arenas has proclaimed will be his next 50-point game, no one wanted to say much about it."I'm not going to comment on that," Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said.

Arenas had posted an entry on his nba.com blog under the heading "Time to Get my 50 Points vs. Portland."

He vowed to score 50 against the Trail Blazers on Sunday as payback for anyone who might have had anything to do with his not making the U.S. national team for the world championships last summer. Portland coach Nate McMillan was an assistant on the team.
