Oden Likely To Skip U.S. Training Camp

Jul 27, 2007 6:27 PM

Greg Oden is leaning toward skipping U.S. training camp next month, possibly ending his chances of playing in the 2008 Olympics.

Oden, the No. 1 pick in the draft, had a tonsillectomy July 14 and was forced to miss the Americans' minicamp last weekend in Las Vegas. He has an invitation to join the team when it reconvenes for training camp on Aug. 15, but said Friday he probably wouldn't be there.

"I don't think I am because of my tonsils," Oden told The Associated Press.

Iguodala To Work Out With U.S. Team

Jul 27, 2007 3:33 AM

Andre Iguodala has caught the attention of USA Basketball.

The 76ers star forward/guard accepted an invitation to practice and scrimmage with the U.S. national team as it prepares for the FIBA Americas Championships, the Olympic qualifying tournament scheduled from Aug. 22 to Sept. 2 in Las Vegas.

Iguodala, who led the Sixers with a scoring average of 18.2 points in 76 games, is in a group of eight to 10 young players who will join the national team for its pretournament camp Aug. 15 to 21 in Las Vegas.

That group includes Al Jefferson, of the Boston Celtics, and Brandon Roy, of the Portland Trail Blazers. Former Villanova star Randy Foye, now with the Minnesota Timberwolves, has been on a list of potential invitees, but reportedly has had some problems with tendinitis after playing for the Wolves' summer-league team.

"The idea is to put players in the pipeline as it relates to USA Basketball, looking ahead to the [2012] Olympics," Colangelo said. "People feel that Andre is a very talented young player who has an awful lot of upside, and that he blossomed."

Roy's Birthday Party Marred By Melee

Jul 24, 2007 1:07 PM

One man was arrested during a melee outside a downtown club that marred NBA player Brandon Roy's birthday party.

Several other NBA players were at the party at Level 5 on Fifth Avenue North early Saturday, including Will Conroy, a former teammate of Roy's at Washington and Garfield High School, Chris Wilcox of the Sonics and Jason Terry, a former Franklin High School star now with the Dallas Mavericks.

Roy, the NBA Rookie of the Year last season for the Portland Trail Blazers, turned 23 Monday, but celebrated with a party Friday night, according to Conroy.

Conroy, a guard for the Los Angeles Clippers, said the NBA players weren't involved in the altercation, which police said involved more than 100 people and spilled onto the street outside the club.

"We were nowhere close to that," Conroy said. "I didn't even know what took place. It wasn't us. We don't get in the middle of that stuff."

Griz Looking At Jacobsen, Udoka Deals

Jul 23, 2007 12:16 AM

The Grizzlies could have the two-guard/small forward they've been searching for by early this week.

And one of the players the team is looking at is Casey Jacobsen, who last played in the NBA during the 2004-05 season when he split time with Phoenix and New Orleans.

'We've talked to a lot of people through this process,'' Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said. ''Casey's a name we talked about at the beginning. He's been out of the NBA for a couple of years and just didn't receive the scrutiny that the other names did.''

Wallace said he has also talked with Portland free agent Ime Udoka. Udoka is an unrestricted free agent who started 75 games for the Trail Blazers last season, averaging 8.4 points and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 40.6 percent from 3-point range. Portland has the league maximum 15 players under contract. The San Antonio Spurs also have expressed interest in signing Udoka.

Wallace did say the player the team signs most likely won't come through a trade. The Grizzlies prefer to hang on to their current players and future draft picks.

''It's a small group we're looking at and we could have something pretty soon,'' he said.

Blazers Sign Outlaw To Three-Year Deal

Jul 18, 2007 1:43 PM

The Trail Blazers took another step toward solidifying their roster Tuesday when the organization made good on its promise to retain free agent Travis Outlaw, signing the 22-year-old small forward to a three-year contract.

Details of the deal were not immediately available, but Bill Duffy, Outlaw's agent, told The Oregonian that the contract is worth roughly $12 million. Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard would not comment Tuesday.

"Travis is really excited with where the team is going, with the direction and enthusiasm, and he wants to play a great role in that and continue to develop," Duffy said. "Quite frankly, Travis was not pushing me that hard to look in other directions."

Memphis Looking At Udoka, Barnes?

Jul 18, 2007 5:39 AM

With their need for frontcourt help mostly addressed by the signing of Darko Milicic, the Grizzlies have turned their attention toward adding perimeter shooting and defense.

Memphis has inquired about free agent swingmen Ime Udoka (Portland) and Matt Barnes (Golden State) as options in those areas.

Spanish guard Juan Carlos Navarro, whose rights belong to the Washington Wizards, is also a player of interest for the Grizzlies.

Durant, Green Combine For 60 Points In Loss

Jul 16, 2007 3:58 AM

Seattle swingman Kevin Durant had several highlight-reel plays Sunday night to break out of an event-long shooting slump, but it wasn't enough as the SuperSonics finished winless in the summer league with an 84-78 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Durant had 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting in what was supposed to be a matchup of the two top picks from last month's draft. However, Portland center Greg Oden left last Sunday after two games to have a tonsillectomy.

"It would have been fun to play against him," Durant said. "There would have been a lot more people here, I guess."

"I wouldn't say that this was my best game, but I got better," Durant said.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward had a pair of dunks that brought the fans to their feet at the Cox Pavilion as he was obviously more comfortable. He was 18-of-56 from the field entering the game.

"He's a very special player that has a lot of skills," Seattle summer coach Ralph Lewis. "Playing games is on the job training and he is growing as a player and we are growing as a team."

Fellow lottery pick Jeff Green scored 32 points to lead the Sonics.

Blazers' Fernandez Signs New Deal In Spain

Jul 13, 2007 5:00 PM

Spain international guard Rudy Fernandez has extended his contract with DKV Joventut for three seasons, tying him to the club through the 2010-11 campaign.

Fernandez, who was selected in the first round of the NBA draft on June 28 by Phoenix and then traded to Portland, had been weighing his options with Barcelona also interested in signing him.

In announcing the new deal, DKV indicated on its web site it would not hinder the player's move to the NBA.

"The club, in exchange (for signing the deal), will ease his way to the NBA in any of the seasons," the club said.

Blake Chooses Portland

Jul 13, 2007 4:58 PM

Free-agent point guard Steve Blake said today he has agreed to a three-year deal with the Trail Blazers.

Blake averaged 8.3 points and 6.6 assists in 49 games with the Nuggets last season. He was willing to return to Denver but opted for Portland as the Nuggets were on the verge of finalizing a contract with guard Chucky Atkins.

"That's OK, if that's the direction they want to go," Blake said in a brief phone interview. "I just decided to go back to Portland."

Blake, 27, made $1.33 million last season and was seeking a starting salary close to the NBA's $5.35 million midlevel exception.
