Damian Lillard: Deeper Three-Pointers Aren't By Accident

Dec 17, 2019 2:33 PM

Damian Lillard, Stephen Curry, Trae Young, Luka Doncic and James Harden are among a group of players who are expanding their three-point range well beyond the line.

"That's not by accident," Lillard told ESPN. "Guys are spending time doing it and getting comfortable and confident with that shot."

After the Portland Trail Blazers were swept by the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the 2018 playoffs, Lillard needed new ways to get his own shot against aggressive opponents. Lillard believed he wouldn't have to overcome double-teams if he were to expand his range.

"We worked on deep ones in so many different ways," Lillard said.

Lillard spent hours during the 2018 offseason putting himself through drills that would make game situations feel easier.

"Shooting it off the bounce, shooting them without jumping, shooting them with no momentum, shooting them from a deep squat and raise up and shoot it," he said. "You know, just uncomfortable positions but still trying to shoot an accurate shot."

Lillard believes the toughest part of preserving good shooting form from further out isn't about the arms and legs as much as the core.

"If you keep your core tight and your body strong, then the ball flies out stronger," he said. "If your body is weak, you come up not as strong and the ball will waver when you're that far out."

Carmelo Anthony Warned Chris Paul To Be Careful With Rockets

Dec 9, 2019 9:17 AM

Carmelo Anthony warned Chris Paul to be careful of the Houston Rockets based on his exit from the team. Paul was traded by the Rockets to the Oklahoma City Thunder last offseason after being told that he would not be moved.

"No, I wasn't surprised at all," Anthony said. "When my situation happened in Houston, he was the first person that I called to come to my room. And we had to clear some things up, and I wanted to know if he had anything to do with it. And that was the first thing that I wanted to know, and he told me, 'No.' And from that point on, I told him, looked him in his eyes and said, 'Look, just be careful.' You know what I mean? Just be careful. And damn sure if [the same situation] didn't happen to him."

Anthony said he had no ill will toward Daryl Morey or the Rockets

"I haven't talked to nobody in their organization, no," Anthony said. "I'm not angry. I'm not bitter at it. It happens. I wish I had an explanation when it happened, but I'm past it."

Paul recently spoke with Marc J. Spears of his experience with the Rockets.

"I was shocked," Paul told The Undefeated. "Truth be told, I just talked to Daryl a couple days before the trade, and he said he wasn't going to trade me [to Oklahoma City]. That's funny because that is going to be the alert that pops up on everybody's phone because nobody knows that. But what the hell, I just said it."

Terry Stotts On Carmelo Anthony: 'He's Been A Breath Of Fresh Air For Us'

Dec 6, 2019 12:18 AM

Terry Stotts discussed Carmelo Anthony's positive impact after the Portland Trail Blazers guaranteed his contract for the rest of the season.

"Melo's been terrific for us. He's enjoying the experience. He's been a breath of fresh air for us that we needed," said Stotts of Anthony, who's averaging 16.9 points and 5.9 rebounds on the season.

Stotts added that he was also impressed by Anthony's conditioning.

"We put a kind of limit/restriction on the first game or two just because we didn't want to extend his minutes not knowing what shape he was in. But now he's playing 32-35 minutes, he played 37 minutes the other night. And for him to be out of NBA basketball for a year and be able to come in and play productive minutes for 35 minutes in an NBA game, to me, was remarkable."
