Jazz's Amaechi: A Victim of 'Human Nature'

Dec 18, 2002 10:34 AM

John Amaechi hasn't watched the tape. He doesn't have to.

The Jazz's backup center knows, in his own mind, he didn't push Chris Webber on Saturday night, but he figures that the foul whistled on him with two seconds left, the call that allowed Webber to sink the game-winning free throws, was as much a result of his identity as a buried-on-the-bench backup as any move he made.

"You can tell the referees haven't seen me do what I do for a long time, which is natural. Human nature. So I have to keep plugging away before I can get a call," Amaechi said of being called for shoving Webber while rebounding John Stockton's missed free throw. "Chris Webber is going to get calls. No, I didn't push him. I'm not that athletic to be jumping on Chris Webber's back. Most people know that."

But people may have forgotten about Amaechi. Certainly, plenty of Jazz fans did, until Saturday's startling 12-point, four-rebound outing in 22 minutes against the Kings -- all season highs. The numbers may be modest, but for a guy who had not made more than one basket in a game all season, they were heartening.

Kings shake Salt Lake

Dec 15, 2002 12:37 PM

It's been said that officials -- in virtually any athletic endeavour -- did a good job when no one knows they were there.

Judging by the bottles of water and cups of ice hurled onto the Delta Center floor Saturday night, Utah Jazz fans knew that referees Bennett Salvatore, Tony Brothers and Marc Davis were there.

The dangerous flying debris also illustrated the frustration of classless fans after the Kings sneaked out with a 98-96 victory before Utah's first sellout crowd this season, 19,911.

Utah Kinged by Sacramento ? again

Dec 15, 2002 12:33 PM

The Sacramento Kings were just a bit too much for the Utah Jazz Saturday night at the Delta Center, which is getting to be fairly predictable. It's not unlike those holiday reruns of "It's a Wonderful Life." Years pass, and still George Bailey ends up realizing he's a lucky man. The angel earns his wings every time.

Saturday night's 98-96 loss left the Jazz with a seven-game losing streak to Sacramento, playoffs not included. But you may as well include them, if you want to get the entire picture. Counting last spring's first-round series, the Jazz have now lost 10 of the last 11.

"We've played this team 10-12 times in the last few years, and it always seems to come down to two or three possessions, and they're (Sacramento) the ones who finish it," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.

Yes, Sloan allowed, the Jazz scored 46 points in the paint ? nearly twice as many as the Kings ? but shot two fewer free throws. Yes, he hinted, the officials blew a call when they whistled John Amaechi for a rebound foul with the score tied and two seconds remaining.

Still, isn't this all simply a flashback to last spring's playoffs?

Kings cash in makeup call

Dec 15, 2002 12:32 PM

John Amaechi can't catch a break. Seventeen months after joining the Utah Jazz he finally shows up for a game, and he gets upstaged by ? of all people?a referee.

Or a trio of referees, depending on your point of view.

On a night when the makeup call had as much to do with the final score as anything the players did, the Jazz lost to the Sacramento Kings, 98-96, at the Delta Center.

It was physical, spirited, entertaining, ending with two iffy calls in the final two seconds. After the final horn, a few frustrated fans in the first sellout crowd of the season showered the referees with water bottles and cups.

And they weren't the only ones frustrated.

Disputed foul costly as Utah loses again

Dec 15, 2002 12:20 PM

Bodies crashing to the ground, athletes rolling in pain, even some blood being shed. The Jazz's 98-96 loss to Sacramento on Saturday certainly had the feel of a playoff game.

An XFL playoff game.

Yet amid all the adrenaline, the intense matchup was decided by contact that fell a little short of brutal, the Jazz growled afterward.

"I just saw it on film," coach Jerry Sloan said of a foul whistled on John Amaechi, who was trying to rebound John Stockton's missed free throw with 2.0 seconds remaining. "You all have your own opinion on it. I'm not going to say anything about it. . . . But that's about as strange as it gets."

Chris Webber, who scored 27 points, 13 of them from the free-throw line, was the beneficiary of referee Marc Davis' call, and he calmly sank two free throws to break a 96-96 tie and send the Jazz to their third straight loss.

Webber trial set

Dec 10, 2002 5:39 AM

Could Chris Webber possibly be trying on his new championship ring in jail?

Jim Schaefer of the Detroit Free Press is reporting that U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds has set the trial for Webber to take place on July 8, after the NBA Finals.  Webber is facing charges of lying to a grand jury about allegedly accepting $280,000 from Michigan booster Ed Martin.

Webber's lawyer, Steve Fishman, had a request granted that the trial be put on hold to allow the all-star to fulfill his obligation to the Sacramento Kings before his trial in Detroit.

"You've got teammates, an organization, the citizens of Sacramento," Fishman said. "There's a lot more people than Chris Webber who are affected by this."

Fishman said, "The suggestion that Chris Webber received any special consideration merely because he is a professional basketball player is so ridiculous as to deserve no further comment."
