Virginia Beach Needs Substantial Taxpayer Help To Build Arena

Nov 29, 2012 10:35 AM

Virginia Beach on Wednesday asked the state of Virginia for $150 million to help build a new arena and assist the Kings with relocation expenses.

If the Kings decide to relocate to Virginia Beach, it will almost entirely be funded by taxpayers in Virginia.

The city itself would put in $195 million, and arena developer Comcast-Spectacor would contribute $35 million.

Despite the collapse of the downtown deal, the Maloofs have said they want to keep the team in Sacramento.

Seattle is also working on its own arena project.

Kings Finally Find Best Role For Tyreke Evans

Nov 28, 2012 1:29 PM

The Sacramento Kings have experimented with Tyreke Evans playing a variety of roles.

Evans appears to have found a fit as a playmaking shooting guard.

Evans will be a restricted free agent in the offseason.

"People say, 'Maybe it's (his progress) because he's in a deal year,' " Keith Smart said. "I don't think so. I think he's too genuine for that. He's a genuine guy. He just loves to play ball."

Evans is moving better without the ball and has never felt better physically.

Virginia Beach Mayor Confirms Meeting With NBA Team

Nov 14, 2012 10:20 AM

While Virgina Beach Mayor Will Sessoms confirmed that he recently met with representatives from an NBA team, he declined to specify the franchise.

Several reports cited unnamed sources that Sessoms met with the Sacramento Kings.

The Kings' owners attempted to move to Anaheim in 2011, but were persuaded by league officials to remain in Sacramento.

The Virginia Beach City Council on Tuesday heard two consultants' financial reports, Virginia Beach city spokesman Marc Davis said. The reports indicated that Virginia Beach is comparable demographically to a number of NBA cities, and that an arena would be a financial boon to the city and region.

Sacramento Media Questioning Silence From Petrie On Suspensions

Nov 13, 2012 12:19 PM

The Sacramento Kings have had two of their players, Thomas Robinson and DeMarcus Cousins, suspended for two games apiece.

But multiple requests from the media to speak to basketball president Geoff Petrie were declined.

Keith Smart appeared, for the first time, "stressed and irritated" to be the representative from the Kings forced to deal with the questions.

Several members of the media reportedly "grumbled openly" about the Kings' inability to confront issues such as these.

Fredette Remains In Kings' Plans

Nov 11, 2012 1:25 PM

Jimmer Fredette has received inconsistent playing time this season as the third point guard on the Sacramento Kings behind Isaiah Thomas and Aaron Brooks.

Fredette hasn't talked about pursuing a trade from the Kings with Geoff Petrie.

"No, definitely not," Fredette said with a laugh. "I haven't talked to Geoff about anything like that."

Fredette has been the subject of a #freejimmer campaign on Twitter.

"I can't control anything about that," Fredette said. "I'm here playing to the best of my ability and supporting my team, and other people can think whatever they want to think. That's not my job. My job is to be here, be supportive and play the best that I can."

Fredette remains in the Kings' plans, but the team has to figure out his role since he may be more of a combo guard.

"Everybody eventually gets their opportunity," Petrie said. "He's got a real good feel for the game, and he hasn't come close to shooting the ball to his potential. That's not a concern given the quality of his stroke and his history of making shots. It'll just require some patience and time."

Kings Begin Season Using Deep Rotation

Nov 4, 2012 3:46 PM

Keith Smart has been using a deep rotation to begin the Sacramento Kings' 12-13 season.

Smart plans on playing 10 to 12 players per game.

In Saturday's double-overtime loss at the Pacers, the Kings had 10 players with at least 11 minutes and seven with at least 20.

"It's a difficult thing to do because you've got to get guys in the right kind of rhythm," Smart said. "I just have to make sure I get our primary guys the right minutes, and everyone else will start to filter in."
