Josh Smith Agrees To Sign With Rockets

Dec 24, 2014 1:24 PM

Josh Smith has agreed to sign with the Houston Rockets.

Smith was waived this week by the Detroit Pistons.

Smith has been promised a spot in the starting lineup and now has the opportunity to play beside former AAU teammate Dwight Howard. Smith only would consider clubs offering a starting spot, which limited his options to the Rockets and Miami Heat

Smith will likely sign a deal with the Rockets for the biannual exception of $2 million once he clears waivers at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings also had interest in Smith.

Nets, Kings Cool Trade Talks With Mason Plumlee Not Available

Dec 23, 2014 4:38 PM

The Brooklyn Nets and Sacramento Kings have cooled on their trade talks involving Deron Williams.

The Kings initiated talks with the Nets on a deal for Williams, with Mason Plumlee actually the main target.

With Plumlee struggling and clashing a bit with Lionel Hollins over the first month of the season, the Kings were hoping he might be available.

The Kings hoped being willing to take on Williams would help get a deal done.

The Nets have no intention of moving Plumlee.

Sacramento was offering a package including Darren Collison, Jason Thompson and Derrick Williams.

Rockets Emerge As Favorites To Sign Josh Smith

Dec 23, 2014 10:41 AM

The Houston Rockets have improved their position as frontrunner to sign Josh Smith.

Beyond Smith's close friend Dwight Howard, there's confidence among Rockets' players that they'll be able to sign him.

The Rockets tried to acquire Smith in the 2013 offseason, but were unable to put together a sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks. Before ultimately signing a four-year $56 million deal with Detroit, Smith had long had interest in finding a way to join the Rockets, sources said.

Houston can use its biannual exception, worth $2.077 million annually, to sign Smith.

The Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat also have interest in Smith.

Stein added that the Miami Heat also have interest in signing Smith.

Kings, Nets Discussing Deron Williams Trade

Jan 5, 2015 4:35 PM

The Sacramento Kings and Brooklyn Nets are discussing a deal centered on Deron Williams.

Talks have centered upon Darren Collison, Derrick Williams and Jason Thompson for Williams.

Sacramento has significant interest with Williams, but a hurdle to a possible deal is the Kings’ desire to have center Mason Plumlee included into the package, league sources said.

The Nets' partnership with Williams has become increasingly fractured over the past two years, and the idea of a breakup has appeal for both sides, sources tell Yahoo.

Williams has two full years and $43 million-plus left on his contract through the end of the 2017 season.

Ranadive Wants Kings' Next Coach To Be Offensive-Minded 'Jazz Director'

Dec 17, 2014 1:00 PM

Vivek Ranadive wants the next head coach of the Sacramento Kings to be an offensive-minded "jazz director."

Ranadive discussed Malone's firing and the Kings' coaching search in an interview Tuesday with ESPN's James Ham, saying that he wants a coach who will help showcase the players' offensive talents.

"Defense is great, but we need defense and offense," the Kings owner said. "We need to go from a rules-based organization, which was important when you had chaos, to a values-based organization -- from kind of a programmatic offense, to a read-and-respond, free-flowing offense.

"I like to use a music metaphor. We had a Sousa marching band, which was needed when there was chaos. But now we need to shift to a jazz band, where people can be individually showcased and improvised. What we need is a jazz director. I think that's the kind of leadership moving forward."

Mullin Resists Lobbying To Become Kings' Coach, Corbin To Be Given 'A Shot'

Dec 16, 2014 3:28 PM

Vivek Ranadive has spent much of the last 24 hours lobbying Chris Mullin to replace Mike Malone despite his lack of NBA coaching experience.

Mullin has been in an advisory role with the Sacramento Kings since Ranadive assumed ownership in 2013.

Sources say that Mullin, in recent months, has indeed expressed some interest to associates about trying his hand at coaching down the road.

Sources told ESPN.com on Monday that the Kings are determined to give interim coach Ty Corbin "a shot" for the rest of the season to see if he can manufacture a more up-tempo style to suit the wishes of Ranadive and the Kings' front office.

George Karl is a likely candidate should the Kings decide to not keep Corbin.

Kings To Use Version Of 4-On-5 Defense

Dec 15, 2014 1:59 PM

With Michael Malone fired, the Sacramento Kings are expected to use version of Vivek Ranadive's four-on-five defense to create cherry-picking baskets.

"(Vivek Ranadive) played the part of a fantasy league owner, treating the Kings like a science experiment. He shared tactical experiences with Malone about coaching his child's youth team, and pressed him to consider playing four-on-five defense, leaking out a defender for cherry-picking baskets."

The Kings will be coached by Ty Corbin on an interim basis with George Karl and Chris Mullin mentioned as permanent candidates.
