Vlade Divac Tried To Hire Scott Perry In Past

Apr 22, 2017 1:22 PM

The Sacramento Kings hired Scott Perry on Friday, which is a move Vlade Divac tried to execute in the past.

“I have known Scott for a long time, and he is very well respected within the league, and with players and agents. I contacted him previously when he was with (former Orlando Magic general manager) Rob (Hennigan), and asked if they would let him go. They said no. But when he became available, I reached out and we talked about the possibility of him joining me. This was my guy. He’s another guy who likes what we are trying to do and has similar thought on players.

“He is that guy, the one who can talk to anyone and knows everyone in the league and (college)."

The Kings have also hired Luke Bornn this offseason, while bringing in Ken Catanella last offseason.

According to numerous league insiders, NBA team executives have found it difficult to negotiate with the Kings because of their thin and inexperienced front office, which these hires should improve.

Kings Hire Luke Bornn As VP Of Analytics And Strategy

Apr 20, 2017 8:01 PM

The Sacramento Kings have hired Luke Bornn as VP of Analytics and Strategy.

Bornn, 31, will replace Roland Beech who left the Kings' front office this offseason.

Bornn will leave soccer giant A.S. Roma as well as his positions as an assistant professor at Simon Fraser University and visiting scholar at Harvard University.

“We’ll be looking at more advanced modeling tools often with the player tracking data to try and get a deeper understanding of player performance,” Bornn told NBC Sports California. “There is a lot of what happens on the court that really is not picked up by the box score. A lot of players that make big contributions make it in ways that don’t appear. It’s not an assist, it’s not a rebound, it’s not a block.”

According to their site, “SportVU utilizes a six-camera system installed in basketball arenas to track the real-time positions of players and the ball 25 times per second. Utilizing this tracking data, STATS is able to create a wealth of innovative statistics based on speed, distance, player separation and ball possession.”

Bornn was introduced to the world of basketball data by Kirk Goldsberry while at Harvard in 2012.

“Kirk and I sort of hit it off,” Bornn said. “He had just gotten SportVU data and he basically said to me, ‘I have this data, but I have no idea what to do with it, I have the basketball side, but I don’t have the technical side.’ I had the technical side and so it started a long collaboration of working with player tracking data.”

Bornn will build a database that is accessible to players, coaches and the front office.

“My role with the Kings will be all encompassing,” Bornn said. “It’s player evaluation, opponent scouting, it’s performance - with the sports science group there. We’ll be looking at all aspects, from the basics of stats, all the way to the more advanced metrics.”

Vlade Divac: Skal Labissiere Can Be Special

Apr 9, 2017 7:50 PM

Skal Labissiere has emerged as one of the NBA's most promising rookies following the trade of DeMarcus Cousins.

Labissiere entered his freshman season at Kentucky as one of the most highly rated prospects but fell to the Sacramento Kings at No. 28.

“Skal can be special,” Vlade Divac said. “He has size and skill, and he’s a great kid. We’re very, very lucky.”

“I’m feeling a little more comfortable out there,” Labissiere said, with a soft smile. “It’s me learning at my own pace, not getting rushed, learning how to see things on the court. It’s not about the next three or four games, it’s about the next couple years, learning how to play with each, develop our chemistry. I’m nowhere near (physically) where I want to be. But this should be a fun summer. Lots of time with the weights, and working on all aspects of my game.”
