Buddy Hield Could Request Trade From Kings If He Remains Out Of Starting Lineup

Feb 12, 2020 4:44 PM

The Sacramento Kings replaced Buddy Hield in the starting lineup last month with Bogdan Bogdanovic.

Hield signed a four-year, $94 million extension with the Kings before the start of the season, but Bogdanovic will be a restricted free agent this offseason and the franchise would like to retain him.

A source with knowledge of Hield's thinking said he could request a trade if he remains displeased with his role. Hield is paid starter money and believes he should be a starter in the NBA.

Hield has already shown a willingness to be publicly critical of Luke Walton.

Bogdanovic is one of Hield's best friends on the team.

Marvin Bagley's 'Left Foot Soreness' Injury Could Be More Serious Than Announced

Feb 12, 2020 4:35 PM

Marvin Bagley has played in just 13 games this season due to injuries and could be out for the remainder of 19-20.

Some sources with the Kings told The Athletic that Bagley's injury could be worse than it was announced.

Bagley has missed the last 11 games with "left foot soreness" after reaggravating the injury that cost him seven games. Bagley also missed 22 games with a broken right thumb.

The Kings were counting on Bagley to take a big step forward in his sophomore season as they push for a playoff spot. The mystery of Bagley's injury hasn't helped how he is perceived internally in some factions of the franchise.

Kings' Ownership Supported Drafting Luka Doncic

Feb 12, 2020 12:51 PM

The Sacramento Kings had support for drafting Luka Doncic at No. 2 overall in 2018 from ownership, but Vlade Divac, Brandon Williams and Peja Stojakovic had concerns about his upside compared to Marvin Bagley.

The Kings also had concerns about how Doncic's ball-dominance would impact De'Aaron Fox. Fox had a breakout sophomore season in 18-19 as Doncic was becoming Rookie of the Year.

Vivek Ranadive took an increased interest in the Kings' scouting process earlier in the year with the belief it was a reaction to looming questions about why Doncic wasn't selected in 2018.

The Kings were expecting Bagley to have a breakout sophomore season in 19-20, but he has been plagued by injuries.

Vivek Ranadive Frustrated With State Of Kings But No Changes Imminent

Feb 12, 2020 12:36 PM

Vivek Ranadive has expressed frustration with the state of the Sacramento Kings in a number of ways.

Ranadive has shared his frustration with both the front office and coaching decision including in private conversations with business associates and in text messages during a season-long group chat with Vlade Divac, Luke Walton, Peja Stojakovic and Matina Kolokotronis. The complaints are focused on the Kings' underachievement and the parts each have played in it.

Ranadive has increased his interest in learning about the Kings' scouting process and has also sought more insight about their network with the belief it is a reaction to why Luka Doncic wasn't selected in 2018.

Ranadive declined a request to be interviewed for this story.

Sources say there is no indication that a change to the front office or coaching staff will be made in the near future, but tension has undoubtedly returned to the franchise.

“We share our fans’ frustrations with how the season has unfolded and are working hard to improve,” the Kings said in a statement to The Athletic that was in response to the request. “We remain confident in Vlade’s leadership in building the winning team that our fans and city deserve.”

Marvin Bagley Unsure Of Return, Says He's 'Going To Try To Come Back This Year'

Feb 9, 2020 1:19 PM

Marvin Bagley said he didn't know when he would return to the Sacramento Kings after aggravating his left foot sprain.

Bagley initially injured his foot on December 26th, but re-aggravated the injury on January 18th against the Jazz.

“I’m definitely going to try to come back this year, but that’s too far ahead at this point. The most important thing for me right now is to make sure I'm healthy," said Bagley.

The Kings will re-evaluate Bagley after the All-Star break.

Bagley said he's taking his rehab day by day.

“Honestly, who knows, I'm just going one day at a time with this, I'm trying not to think too far ahead. I obviously want to play, I want to be out there. It sucks. I've only played however many games I've played this season over things I can't control.”

Kings Remain Comfortable Keeping Bogdan Bogdanovic Past Deadline

Feb 5, 2020 10:36 PM

The Sacramento Kings continue to receive serious trade interest in Bogdan Bogdanovic.

The Kings insist they're comfortable entering the offseason with Bogdanovic as a restricted free agent.

The Philadelphia 76ers and Charlotte Hornets are among two of the teams most interested in Bogdanovic. Discussions with the Los Angeles Lakers are not ongoing.

Luke Walton recently moved Buddy Hield to the bench to make Bogdanovic a starter.

According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, the Kings are optimistic on their chances to re-sign Bogdanovic. Their trade of Dewayne Dedmon was motivated, at least in part, by wanting to keep Bogdanovic.

Lakers, Hornets Interested In Trading For Bogdan Bogdanovic

Feb 3, 2020 11:44 AM

The Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets have expressed interest in Bogdan Bogdanovic.

Bogdanovic will be a restricted free agent this offseason and it is unclear how he fits into the long-term plans of the Sacramento Kings.

Bogdanovic would be a natural fit for the Philadelphia 76ers, but they have not held substantive talks with the Kings.

The Kings are likely to get at least a first round pick in value for Bogdanovic should they trade him.
