Abunassar: Leonard's Shooting Form Correctable

Jun 30, 2011 10:37 AM

Founder and president of Impact Basketball Joe Abunassar thinks Kawhi Leonard’s jumpshot is a simple fix.

He says the ball rotation and footwork is fine. In drills, he tried to shorten his stroke and get the basketball on his fingertips and out of his huge hands.

It’s likely something the Spurs tweaked this week, too. Abunassar thinks it’s easily correctable when Leonard returns to work with him in a few weeks.

“It’s just a repetition thing,” Abunassar said.

But repetition isn’t always fun. Leonard turned 20 on Wednesday. How many guys that age, finally free of school and with some money, really want to spend summer sweating in a gym?

Leonard appears to be one. “If his workout was scheduled for 9 a.m.,” Abunassar said, “then he was in at 7:45 a.m.”

Sometimes he stayed until 11:30 p.m. Sometimes they had to tell him he had to leave.

“Kawhi is one of the most focused and serious,” Abunassar said, “I’ve ever had.”

Union VP Bonner: Owners Proposing Worst Deal In History Of Sports

Jun 30, 2011 10:25 AM

Player’s union vice president Matt Bonner said he did not know if the union would offer a counterproposal to the owners’ latest offer. He also would not speculate on whether the players, like their NFL counterparts, would vote to decertify the union in the event of a lockout.

The owners’ latest offer would guarantee players no less than $2 billion per year for the duration of a 10-year deal, at an average salary of $5 million per player. Union officials say that represents a pay cut of $7 billion over the life of the deal, compared with the system in place now.

Owners are also angling for a hard salary cap like the NHL’s, which players view as a nonstarter.

“They’re asking for a deal that is worse than hockey’s, which is considered to be the worst collective bargaining deal in sports history,” Bonner said. “If that’s their best offer, we don’t have much choice but to fight for something better.”

Ginobili: Spurs Championship Window Not Closed

Jun 30, 2011 1:18 AM

in an interview with the Argentinian newspaper Ole, San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili disputed teammate Tony Parker's assertion that the Spurs' championship window was probably closed after their first-round loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

"It's simple. Memphis played hard, defended well and had a very inspired Zach Randolph," Ginobili said. "I do not think it was physical. We reached the top in February when the rest is done more slowly or as happened to us in other seasons, when we gave up in the playoffs. This time it was not."

Tim Duncan is not expected to opt out of the final year of his contract, and the Spurs don’t plan to offer him an extension before the collective bargaining agreement expires Thursday, according to a source familiar with talks between the team and the franchise icon.

As such, Duncan will play out the final year of his existing deal, during which he is scheduled to earn $21.2 million, and remains on track to become a free agent after the 2011-12 campaign.

Duncan faces a Thursday deadline to exercise a early-termination option.

Leonard Appears To Learn Of Trade On Podium

Jun 23, 2011 10:24 PM

Kawhi Leonard was drafted by the Indiana Pacers with the 15th overall pick, but minutes later he was headed to the San Antonio Spurs as part of a trade.

The Pacers will deal the rights to Leonard and the 42nd overall pick to the Spurs for guard George Hill.

“I feel good. I had a meeting with them, and I got a great vibe from them,” he said of San Antonio when told of the reported trade. “Just any team I’m on, I’m happy with right now. I’m just going in, trying to do whatever the coach wants me to do to make the team successful.”

Leonard had been projected to go in the top-10 by a number of analysts, but a confluence of events led him to slide to the middle pick of the first round.
