Popovich Sees Leonard As Future Face Of Spurs

Aug 30, 2012 8:21 PM

Gregg Popovich envisions Kawhi Leonard as the future cornerstone of the Spurs.

“I think he’s going to be a star. And as time goes on, he’ll be the face of the Spurs I think. At both ends of the court, he is really a special player,” said Popovich, who has been San Antonio's coach since 1996. “And what makes me be so confident about him is that he wants it so badly. He wants to be a good player, I mean a great player. He comes early, he stays late, and he’s coachable, he’s just like a sponge. When you consider he’s only had one year of college and no training camp yet, you can see that he’s going to be something else.”

The Spurs are set to return their entire roster, plus Nando de Colo, who the team selected with the 53rd pick of the 2009 draft.

“Well we thought we were very fortunate and we were very happy that we were able to sign our guys, that we could bring Boris (Diaw) back and Danny (Green) back,” Popovich said. “And they’re going to be even better for us this year, so that’s what we look for in improvement, for them to understand the system more, for Kawhi Leonard to be here in training camp, and so in a sense those three guys are like new players for us. We regard them almost like free agents, and we look forward to them rounding out the group that’s been here.”

Celtics, Spurs, Lakers, Warriors, Jazz Rated As Having Best Uniforms By Uni Watch

Aug 24, 2012 10:52 AM

Paul Lukas of Uni Watch ranks the uniforms of all 30 NBA teams, with the Celtics coming in first.

"The Rolling Stones, "Goodfellas," a Hershey's with almonds -- the classics are classic for a reason," writes Lukas about the Celtics. "That definitely applies to the Celtics' set. No goofy side panels, no extraneous bells or whistles -- just a perfect, vertically arched wordmark and a simple green-and-white color scheme. They rank atop this list despite sometimes wearing that black-trimmed alternate."

The Spurs, Lakers, Warriors and Jazz comprise the remainder of the top-five.

"The Raiders aren't the only team that knows how to wear silver and black," writes Lukas in regards to the Spurs. "In addition to the killer colors, the Spurs are also among the few NBA teams that have successfully incorporated a graphic image into their chest typography -- a small element that goes a long way."

Stephen Jackson Open To Finishing Career With Spurs

Aug 23, 2012 10:56 AM

Stephen Jackson said Wednesday that he's open to finishing his career with the Spurs.

“If things work out in San Antonio I wouldn't mind finishing my career there,” Jackson said. “But you know it's a business and I'm one of those guys that doesn't mind going to play somewhere else. I've been on seven different teams.”

In his second stint with the Spurs, Jackson has had no trouble fitting in with teammates.

“When I left (in 2003) it was kind of sour because we had just won a championship and I wanted to go back,” he said. “But the contract and business part didn't work. But going back this time was extra sweet to be back with the team I won a championship.”

Doc Rivers and Gregg Popovich are considered the top candidates to replace Mike Krzyzewski as head coach of the United States, according to sources.

Jerry Colangelo will remain in his current position for one more Olympics and will give Krzyzewski some time to reconsider remaining.

Sources say Rick Pitino has expressed strong interest in the position, but an NBA coach is widely expected to eventually land the job.

Mike D'Antoni and Nate McMillan, current Team USA assistants without a permanent job with a team, are considered longshots.
