Kawhi Leonard Returns To New York For Rehab

Mar 31, 2018 3:54 PM

Kawhi Leonard has returned to New York to continue his rehab for his lingering right quad injury under the supervision of outside medical personnel.

Leonard returned to New York on Monday and there's no timetable for his possible return to San Antonio.

The Spurs have six games remaining in the regular season, which limits the odds of Leonard returning.

Leonard has been using the National Basketball Players Association headquarters gymnasium facilities in recent days.

Leonard is eligible for a five-year, $217 million supermax contract extension this summer with the Spurs. Leonard could also become a free agent in 2019.

Leonard left San Antonio in the aftermath of a team meeting on March 17th.

Leonard initially sought treatment within the organization before consulting with a specialist in New York on Jan. 16.

Leonard resumed working out in San Antonio on Feb. 27, and the intensity of his workouts has varied.

LaMarcus Aldridge Set For MRI On Bruised Left Knee

Mar 28, 2018 9:59 AM

LaMarcus Aldridge is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his bruised left knee.

Aldridge suffered the injury in a collision with Otto Porter Jr.

Aldridge limped to the locker room and didn't return.

With Kawhi Leonard out, Aldridge has taken a larger scoring load. Aldridge entered Tuesday's game having scored 178 points in his last five outings, which is the most over a five-game span in his career.

“Considering the way he’s been playing and our recent success in those games, we are at the point where if LaMarcus gets a cough, a cold, we are in deep trouble,” Manu Ginobili said. “Hopefully, it’s not serious because it’s going to be really tough to score without him and we have tough games against teams that need to win. We really need him.”

Spurs Claim Players-Only Meeting Went Beyond Kawhi Leonard

Mar 23, 2018 7:10 PM

The San Antonio Spurs said their players-only meeting went beyond Kawhi Leonard's status.

"The meeting, it wasn't just about him," said Danny Green, one of Leonard's closest friends on the team. "[It was] a meeting for the team. Nobody was frustrated or took anything the wrong way. We were communicating like adults. We don't have personalities in our locker room to be coming at each other. We're not an emotional team. So in the locker room, we don't get emotional either. We just talk like adults."

Tony Parker reportedly was the leader of the meeting, which was described as tense.

Parker declined to discuss specifics about the meeting.

"You should know better that I can't talk about that," Parker said. "That's private stuff, locker room stuff. We always talk as a team, and you know we can't talk about that."

Leonard had targeted games in the past week, only to decide he wasn't ready to return, league sources said.

Green relayed the same sentiment Manu Ginobili expressed on Wednesday about Leonard's potential return.

"It's been that since [after the] All-Star [break]," Green said. "[Gregg Popovich] has made that very clear after the break. That hasn't changed. Pop said if he does come back, it would be great to have him. But our mindset with 10 games left: We've got to make the best of it with the group that we have."

Spurs Hold Players-Only Meeting Over Kawhi Leonard's Status

Mar 22, 2018 12:12 PM

The San Antonio Spurs held a players-only meeting attempting to convince Kawhi Leonard to return to the lineup.

Tony Parker led the meeting after Saturday's win over the Wolves.

The conversation was described as tense and emotional at times, league sources said.

Several teammates spoke up to express frustration and confusion over Leonard's status.

Leonard was resolute in response, insisting that he had good reason for sitting out all but nine games with a right quad injury this season.

Leonard will become eligible for a $200 million contract extension this offseason.

Manu Ginobili Not Expecting Kawhi Leonard To Return This Season

Mar 21, 2018 2:50 PM

The San Antonio Spurs have reverted back to the assumption Kawhi Leonard won't return this season.

Leonard was at the Spurs' annual team picture but didn't participate in shootaround a few minutes later.

"He is not coming back," Manu Ginobili said. "For me, he's not coming back because it's not helping [to think Leonard is returning]. We fell for it a week ago again. I guess you guys made us fall for it. But we have to think that he's not coming back; that we are who we are, and that we got to fight without him. That shouldn't be changing, at least until he is ready for the jungle."

Leonard's target date for return has been "mid-March."

Popovich said, "no, why would we do that?" when asked Monday whether there was a timetable in mind for making a decision to shelve Leonard for the rest of the season.

"He's got to be cleared by his medical staff that he's seeing," Popovich said on Mar. 14. "And until he gets cleared, we can't make a decision on when he's coming back. So once he gets cleared, then he and I can sit down and talk and see what we think about an appropriate time to come back. But that clearance has to be obtained first."

Gregg Popovich: It's Been A Frustrating Season

Mar 19, 2018 6:28 PM

The San Antonio Spurs have used 24 starting lineups this season as they have accrued 185 total games missed due to injury. Kawhi Leonard alone has missed 61 games.

"It's been a frustrating season," Gregg Popovich said. "But the challenges have pulled a lot of people closer. You have to do different things to try to stay afloat. It's been rewarding, as counterintuitive as that sounds."

"You've got to think: You can find the silver lining in anything," Danny Green said. "These young guys have gotten a great opportunity to show what they can do, and I think this will be great for them moving forward for their careers and for us as a team also to build some character, some depth, some trust and experience with these younger guys.

"We're hoping when it all comes together that this will be good for us."

Kawhi Leonard's Return Date Pushed Back

Mar 13, 2018 5:57 PM

Kawhi Leonard won't return on Thursday from his lingering quadriceps injury.

There had been increased optimism Leonard would return this week.

Leonard will continue to evaluate his injury for a possible comeback before the season ends, league sources said.

Leonard missed the first 27 games of the season with the injury and returned on a limited basis Dec. 12, playing sporadically over the next month. He last played 29 minutes on Jan. 13 and hasn’t returned to the court since.

Michael C. Wright reports nothing has materially changed with Leonard's situation and that he'll return whenever he's ready. Leonard's return is dependent on his comfort level managing the injury.
