Exec: Pau Gasol Doesn't Have Trade Value

Jan 23, 2019 10:11 AM

Pau Gasol has had his minutes reduced since returning from a foot injury by Jakob Poeltl.

Gasol is on a $16 million salary, which makes a trade for the San Antonio Spurs difficult.

“I just don’t see him having any trade value,” one league executive said.

Gasol only has $6.7 million of his $16 million salary for 19-20 guaranteed.

Spurs Interested In Trading For Wing

Jan 23, 2019 10:07 AM

The San Antonio Spurs have attempted to acquire a wing player over the last few months.

The Spurs had interest in trading for Trevor Ariza but were unable to find a suitable trade with the Phoenix Suns.

Stanley Johnson could be a potential target for the Spurs. Assistant general manager Brian Wright was in the front office of the Detroit Pistons when he was drafted in 2015. Executives believe Wright remains a supporter of Johnson.

“Can (the Spurs) fix everything that’s wrong with him?” another NBA scout asked, pointing to Johnson’s shooting as a concern. “Maybe (the Spurs) are the culture for him to turn him around.”

Johnson will be a restricted free agent this offseason.

Gregg Popovich remains undecided about coaching the San Antonio Spurs beyond the current season.

Popovich turns 70 on Jan. 28 and is in the final season of his current five-year contract extension.

“I don’t know the answer,” Popovich said when asked about his plans for next season.

“He’ll coach as long as he wants to coach,” RC Buford said.

Popovich has committed to coaching U.S.A. Basketball at the 2019 FIBA World Cup and the 2020 Olympics.

Tony Parker Was Told By Popovich He'd Be Spurs' Third String Point Guard

Jan 14, 2019 8:01 PM

Tony Parker thought he would remain with the San Antonio Spurs for his entire career, but a June conversation with Gregg Popovich changed the dynamic.

"Pop just told me that I was going to be the third point guard, and I had to think really hard about if I was going to stay," Parker says. "So then I told him I'm not gonna stay. I think they really didn't believe I was gonna leave anyway. I think they thought I'd be like Manu and just stay."

Parker signed with the Charlotte Hornets.

The Spurs lost Dejounte Murray for the season in October, which would have created more minutes for Parker.

Gregg Popovich Moves To Third In All-Time Coaching Wins After Double-OT Victory

Jan 11, 2019 2:29 AM

Gregg Popovich won his 1,222nd career game as a head coach and surpassed Jerry Sloan for third in all-time NBA coaching wins following the San Antonio Spurs' 154-147 double-OT win against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The game featured a career-high 56 points from LaMarcus Aldridge, which is the most points for a Spurs player since Tony Parker scored 44 points in 2008, and the most points without a 3-pointer since Shaquille O'Neal in 2000.

2006 was the last time that two teams combined for over 300 points in a game, not including the All-Star Game. The Spurs also shot 16-19 from deep, the highest 3-point percentage ever for a team with more than 15 attempts.

Derrick White and Jerami Grant each chipped in with career-highs in points, while Russell Westbrook set a career-high in assists with a triple-double with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 24 assists.

Spurs Interested In Pursuing Kristaps Porzingis In Free Agency

Jan 8, 2019 8:20 AM

The San Antonio Spurs are viewed as a team who would have significant interest in Kristaps Porzingis in free agency.

Porzingis will be a restricted free agent this offseason as the Knicks also pursue max free agents.

The Spurs would have a difficult time creating enough cap space this offseason to sign Porzingis.

The Brooklyn Nets have also previously been mentioned as a team that would be interested in Porzingis.

Gregg Popovich Asked Scottie Pippen To Mentor Kawhi Leonard

Jan 5, 2019 1:22 AM

Before the relationship between Gregg Popovich and Kawhi Leonard turned sour, Popovich asked Scottie Pippen to give Leonard playing advice following a San Antonio Spurs game in Chicago.

"Kind of get a feel because he felt like that his game patterned my game a little bit. I kind of admired his game and told him I'd been watching him and could see he's been getting better and better. And things I felt like he could work on to become even a better player. And I felt like he's filled all those voids," said Pippen.

Pippen did add that Leonard was a reserved person.

"He did speak, but as you guys know, Kawhi's a very quiet player, so he doesn't speak much off the court, either. But it was great just to sit down and talk to him."

Gregg Popovich Regrets Leadership Comments About Kawhi Leonard

Jan 3, 2019 10:40 PM

According to sources, Gregg Popovich regretted comments he made recently about Kawhi Leonard's leadership.

"Kawhi was a great player, but he wasn't a leader or anything," Popovich said of Leonard. "Manu [Ginobili] and Patty [Mills] were the leaders. Kawhi's talent will always be missed, but that leadership wasn't his deal at that time."

Popovich regretted the comments and also how they were perceived.

Gregg Popovich Not Interested In Rehashing Past With Kawhi Leonard

Jan 2, 2019 5:09 PM

Ahead of Thursday's game against the Toronto Raptors, Gregg Popovich was not interested in rehashing the past with Kawhi Leonard.

"You move on in life," he said. "We're not going to redo what's happened in the past in any way, shape or form. It's of no consequence at this point, and it does no good to go backward and talk about this, that or the other. One of the reasons is you guys will interpret it whatever way you want anyway. So it doesn't matter what we say. You're gonna say whatever you want. It's a waste of our time. "

Popovich and Patty Mills hope Leonard is received well from the crowd in San Antonio.

"I don't speak for other people, but I hope that they treat everybody with kindness and respect," Popovich said. "We always have in the past, so we'll see."

Asked whether he expected a negative reaction when Leonard is introduced, Mills expressed optimism.

"I hope they react just as well and the same that they do with any other ex-teammate that comes back," Mills said. "He's been a great teammate. He's been a great friend to me, and he deserves that. I'm hoping that it will be a warm welcome back to San Antonio, a place where he has won a championship and grew up here. People have treated him well -- the community, fans and people here in San Antonio. I think that goes without saying the kind of people that the community of San Antonio are, and the class and how family-oriented this city is. That's what I hope. That's what I expect."
