Spurs Retire Manu Ginobili's Jersey In Post-Game Ceremony

Mar 29, 2019 2:34 AM

The San Antonio Spurs retired Manu Ginobili's jersey in an emotional, 25-minute ceremony.

"I'm telling you, I'm one of the lucky ones. I've been dealt amazing cards. I just had to play them OK. That was all I had to do," said Ginobili.

Ginobili's former teammates and coaches, including Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Gregg Popovich, all paid tribute to his legacy and impact on foreign players in the league.

"He showed the folly of me trying to coach him too much...In the beginning, he was like a mustang out in the field someplace. That's how he lived his life on the court. He was fearless, wild and did things that won games. So when I step back and look at, 'Manu, I think that pass could have been a little bit better.' That's a pretty inane comment when he just did seven other things to help us win the game. So I basically learned to zip it as his career progressed. He's someone that his constant activity would try your patience at times. But over time, you realize that he was gonna get a lot more done by just playing and didn't really need a whole lot of instruction from me," said Popovich.

Boris Diaw added that Ginobili brought a new way of playing to the NBA.

"He was the first one, I think, playing this way and bringing a different type of basketball when everybody was kind of playing the same way. Manu brought something new, something different, and a lot of young guys looked at him and tried to copy it and saw that it was working. I think the guys that we see now, of course, are those young guys from years ago."

Spurs Present Dwyane Wade With Jerseys Of Franchise Players

Mar 21, 2019 12:59 AM

The San Antonio Spurs gave Dwyane Wade signed jerseys from Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker before their matchup. The Spurs also presented Wade with a tribute video.

"Pop let me know that they were going to do something for me here. But that was cool. I didn't know it was going to be before the game, and I liked the music swag they had on it, the videos they put up. It was real cool. I'm so thankful, so appreciative. I don't expect those things to happen to me at all. I just come out and do my job every night. I'm thankful for the relationships I have. I have a great one with Coach, and I just appreciate what they did," said Wade.

Gregg Popovich explained why he thought Wade was an icon in the game.

"He certainly is an iconic figure as far as NBA basketball goes...He had a ferocious attitude on the court. But it was matched with a wonderful smile and a great understanding of the world and community off the court. I think that's what made him so special -- a coveted teammate, somebody that everybody enjoyed playing with, a guy that cared about more than just basketball. That's what makes him iconic in my mind," said Popovich.

LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard Discuss 'Playing Together Again'

Mar 13, 2019 7:57 AM

LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard cleared the air through text messages at the behest of Jamal Crawford. There had been an unspoken tension between the two since Lillard's arrival and Aldridge's subsequent departure in free agency.

"I keep telling him I’m going to come back and finish there. That’s something him and I have talked about — playing together again,” said Aldridge.

Lillard added that had they gotten to know each other while they were Blazer teammates, Aldridge would still be in Portland.

“If we would have talked about it, we would have still been playing together. There was a whole lot of that in our conversation. It was like…all of this could have been prevented," said Lillard.
