Valanciunas Impresses Against USA Under-19 Team

Jun 29, 2011 4:02 PM

Jonas Valanciunas was the best player on the floor as Lithuania humiliated the United States 108-75 in a tuneup for the FIBA under-19 championship, which gets underway on Thursday in Latvia.

The fifth overall selection by the Raptors imposed his will on the smaller Americans, compiling a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, along with two blocks and a steal.

Valanciunas is rail-thin and must pack on 15-25 pounds before he can compete effectively in the NBA, but against those his own age, he has consistently dominated.

Previously, Valanciunas was named MVP of FIBA’s under-18 and under-16 tournaments.

The San Antonio Spurs are engaged in discussions about trading point guard Tony Parker to secure a high pick in Thursday’s draft, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Spurs have talked to teams in the lottery, including the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings, who hold the fifth and seventh picks, respectively. The Kings are determined to get a frontline point guard, and have also talked with the Denver Nuggets about Raymond Felton.

It’s unclear who the Spurs would prefer to take if they acquired a high lottery pick.

Casey Used Film Of Hockey Players To Help Dallas Defense

Jun 21, 2011 2:52 PM

During his introductory press conference as the head coach of the Raptors, Dwane Casey talked about his role as the architect of the Mavericks' defense.

Casey said he used hockey video to help set the defensive team’s defensive mindset during the NBA finals.

“Because we felt we were playing too soft against Miami to start the series,” he said. “And it really set the tone.

“I don’t know a lot about of hockey. I know I’ll learn about it. But we spliced in (footage of) those guys checking players up into the window (glass), into the boards and that type of thing and that’s the way we want to play."

Raptors Have 'Great Interest' In Knight

Jun 21, 2011 10:16 AM

The Raptors, who pick fifth in this week’s draft, have have eyes for point guard Brandon Knight.

"He's a big-time athlete, big-time motor," Raptors director of scouting Jim Kelly said after Knight's workout on June 7. "[He] can really fly up and down the court there."

Most important may be what Knight brings defensively. If Casey is indeed the Raptors' next coach, his defense will only be as good as the guys on the floor.

"[Knight] has all the tools to be a good defender," Kelly said. "That's one of the reasons we have great interest in him."

The Raptors owe point guard Jose Calderon more than $20 million over the next two seasons and also have combo guards Leandro Barbosa (who has a player option this summer) and Jerryd Bayless on the roster. But that won't stop them from selecting Knight.

"At this point, especially when we're in the top part of the Draft at No. 5, we're looking for the best possible player," Kelly said. "And there happens to be a number of very good point guards there."
