Boozer Will Have Surgery

Dec 30, 2008 5:58 PM

Carlos Boozer will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee.

Orthopedic specialist Dr. Richard Ferkel will perform the surgery.

"What they're suspecting is that he's got some loose particles in there that are settling in the joint," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said.

Nowitzki's Flagrant Foul A Trend In Utah

Dec 27, 2008 8:27 AM

For the second time in as many seasons, a Utah forward frustrated Dirk Nowitzki and drew a flagrant foul.

Last March, Nowitzki tangled with Andrei Kirilenko under the basket and drew a Flagrant-1 foul when Kirilenko was slammed to the court on his back.

On Friday night, Matt Harpring irritated Nowitzki to the point that he retaliated with a fist to Harpring's face. Nowitzki was ejected.

"It appeared to me that it was accidental, but they said his fist was closed so it's an automatic Flagrant-2," Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. "They went and looked at the video and I said, 'What he did wasn't intentional.' He said it doesn't matter, just by the letter of the rule if there's a closed fist.

"I don't think the intent was to strike Harpring in the face. Dirk doesn't have any kind of pattern with that kind of stuff. It was microcosm of the night, really."

Utah Almost Traded Boozer

Dec 22, 2008 4:07 PM

The Jazz almost traded forward Carlos Boozer last season when it was learned that his son had been diagnosed with life-threatening sickle cell anemia.

Boozer privately requested to be dealt somewhere closer to where the child was being treated in Miami, which is an area much more conducive to recovery than Utah.

Boozer played through the season mostly away from his son, and before a trade could be worked out, his son full recovered.

"So it got back to business as usual," Jazz owner Larry Miller said, "and never really got public."

Could Pistons Go After Boozer?

Dec 19, 2008 4:27 PM

The Pistons will have a lot of extra cash this coming summer with the contracts of Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson expiring, which means they could make a play for Carlos Boozer.

Boozer famously revealed earlier this week that he'll opt out of his contact to "explore" free agency after the season.

He'll be looking for more than the $12.7 million he is scheduled to earn next season.

However, it remains to be seen if Detroit president Joe Dumars wants to keep as much money as possible open for the heralded summer of 2010.

Jazz Owner On Boozer: 'One Of The Stupidest Things I've Heard'

Dec 19, 2008 4:16 PM

Jazz owner Larry Miller wasn't happy with the comments forward Carlos Boozer made regarding the opt out clause in his contract earlier this week.

He called Boozer's comments "one of the top 10 stupidest things I've ever heard an NBA player do in 24 years."

Boozer hinted that he'd opt out of his current contract at the end of the season to explore his options.

"Carlos knows better," Miller added. "He told [Jazz general manager] Kevin [O'Connor] he just screwed up, but that doesn't fix it, so what do the fans think now?"

Since the initial comments, Boozer said that he didn't mean he was definitely leaving Utah.

Boozer Clarifies Opt Out Remarks

Dec 19, 2008 7:33 AM

Utah forward Carlos Boozer has attempted to clarify the comments he made earlier this week about opting out of his contract this coming summer.

"What I was trying to say to him was, 'Obviously, in my business, like in most people's businesses, you get a chance every now and then to sign a long-term contract and have stability,' " Boozer said. "So the smart thing for me as an individual, obviously, would be to opt out."

Boozer is in the fifth year of a six-year, $68 million contract. He has the right to opt out of the final year and, on July 1, become an unrestricted free agent.

"All I really said ? and it's the same thing I'm telling you guys now ? is that this summer I'll look at the situation," he added. "I'll make a decision then. Honestly, I have my opportunity to opt out and have a long-term deal as opposed to a one-year deal, and it's something I think will be advantageous for any athlete."

So he's leaving open the possibilty of staying with the Jazz.

"Obviously, I want to stay here with the team. I wasn't trying to say I was gonna leave or anything like that. Obviously, I'll look at my options," said Boozer.
