Jazz Expected To Add Point Guard

Dec 27, 2009 6:34 PM

Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor says that the team will add a point guard soon.

Utah traded rookie Eric Maynor and the contract of Matt Harpring to Oklahoma City for a German prospect.

After the deal, the Jazz have 12 players under contract and just two points guards -- Deron Williams and Ronnie Price.

"... We're going to study some tapes and make some phone calls about the availability of guys and determine what direction we're going to go," O'Connor said.

The NBA requires that teams carry 13 players, which will force the Jazz to add a player.

Maynor, Harpring Trade Saves Jazz $10M

Dec 23, 2009 7:44 AM

The Jazz saved themselves $10 million on Tuesday when they traded rookie guard Eric Maynor and Matt Harpring's expiring contract to the Thunder.

In exchange for Maynor and Harpring, Utah received the rights to a German player that has never appeared in an NBA game.

"It's good for Oklahoma City, because they get a good young player (in Maynor)," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said. "And it's good for us, because it allows us to address our financial situation.

"Basically the reason we did that was to relieve ourselves of some luxury-tax responsibilities ... and to do that we had to give up an asset," he added. "It was a difficult decision. We're disappointed that we had to do that, but in these economic times we saved a great deal of money and we're able to be aggressive, still, going forward."

The Jazz are in excess of the salary cap and luxury-tax threshold.

Boozer Talks About Joining Howard In Orlando

Dec 22, 2009 11:36 AM

On an off day Sunday, Carlos Boozer spent a good portion of it visiting Dwight Howard.

"Who wouldn't want to play with Superman?'' Boozer asked FanHouse after Utah's Monday morning workout at Amway Arena. "It would be great. We're like brothers. On top of his competitiveness, and his dominance on the court, he's so much fun to be around. Yes, the two of us could work well together, two dominant inside players. But we'll just have to see what happens.''

The Magic are over the salary cap, so a sign-and-trade would likely be required to happen in order to facilitate a trade.

"We talked about it (becoming teammates)," Howard recalled Monday after the Magic practice. "But aaaah ... we'll let that happen down the road."

Sloan Wants More From Okur

Dec 21, 2009 7:25 AM

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is looking to get more out of center Mehmet Okur.

"He's gotten off to kind of slow starts," Sloan said of Okur. "I think that's hurt him a little bit. And part of it is we try to get the ball inside, and he's caught on the outside playing out there a little bit more than usual. We haven't posted him up maybe as much as he should be."

Okur is averaging 12.8 points, down from 17.0 last season. He was an All-Star back in 2007.

"I think he's got to work harder to be able to run the floor a little bit better and get a chance to get some better looks at the basket," Sloan said, "because when we run 'power,' which we do a great deal of the time, he's the guy on the perimeter, and sometimes I think he can probably take that (post) spot if he put more into it."

Sloan did agree, however, that part of the reason for Okur's drop in production has been the aggressiveness of Carlos Boozer.

"That has something to do with it, obviously," Sloan said.

"But (Okur) needs to get some better looks at the basket. When we move the basketball, he gets opportunities."

Korver's Knee Still Isn't 100 Percent

Dec 18, 2009 4:41 PM

Jazz guard Kyle Korver has played in two games, but says that his surgically-repaired knee isn't 100 percent.

He scored seven points in 11 minutes against the Nets on Wednesday night.

"There's still some pain," said Korver, who underwent underwent arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 28 to remove a bone spur from his left knee.

"I have weightroom power back, but I don't have basketball power back. Not all the way," he added. "There's still some movements I'm not very confident in. But it's coming. It's getting better. My mind felt, for sure, better than it did the other night."

Could Jazz Package Boozer With Pick?

Dec 15, 2009 4:45 PM

The Jazz will receive a first-round pick from the Knicks this coming June and David Aldridge writes that packing Carlos Boozer with the selection could be a possibility.

Boozer has played well this season, but Utah has long been considered a long-shot to re-sign the power forward, who will hit the free agent market next summer.

Completing a sign-and-trade would give Boozer an extra year in his next contract and adding New York's unprotected pick just spices up the deal for the Jazz.

Aldridge writes that it would be hard for anyone to not at least consider a deal that would land an All-Star power forward and likely a high lottery pick.
