Jazz Focused On Building Around Rudy Gobert Instead Of Rebuilding

Jul 16, 2017 11:16 AM

The Utah Jazz are focusing on continuing to build around Rudy Gobert instead of rebuilding following the departure of Gordon Hayward.

Hayward signed with the Boston Celtics.

"We feel like we can build defensively around Rudy Gobert," Lindsey told The Tribune. "We look at him, and he's a top 10 player and unique defender. So we wanted to build a team around his talents."

The Jazz re-signed Joe Ingles while also signing Thabo Sefolosha, Jonas Jerebko and Ekpe Udoh.

"We have the chance to be very good defensively," Utah rookie guard Donovan Mitchell said. "With Rudy in the middle, that allows the guards on the perimeter to pressure their men. If we get beat, we have the big guy to erase our mistakes and challenge in the paint. It's a nice luxury to have."

Joe Ingles Jokes He May Wear Gordon Hayward's No. 20 Next Season

Jul 12, 2017 7:56 PM

Joe Ingles joked that he may take Gordon Hayward's No. 20 next season.

“I might take his number,” said Ingles, who’s worn No. 2 the last three seasons in Utah. “I might take number 20.”

Ingles is looking forward to guarding Hayward when the Jazz play the Celtics next season.

I’m definitely guarding him,” Ingles said, laughing. “I’ve already told Coach (Quin Snyder). I texted coach the next day and said between me and Donovan (Mitchell), we’ll give him a good game.”

Ingles was believed to be Hayward's closest friend on the Jazz.

“He’s always going to be a good friend of mine,” Ingles said. “But I still don’t like him for the time being because he left us, but we’ll be fine.”

Celtics Playing In East Was Key Part Of Pitch To Gordon Hayward

Jul 11, 2017 11:42 AM

A big part of the Boston Celtics pitch to Gordon Hayward was the fact that the Eastern Conference represents an easier path to The Finals, according to sources. The Miami Heat also pitched this issue but to a lesser extent.

While the Utah Jazz would surely be a contender for the Eastern Conference Finals, they're stuck playing in the West where they would surely remain behind the Golden State Warriors, and possibly the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets as well.

Hayward is also more likely to make All-Star teams in the Eastern Conference and possibly even start.

Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Memphis and Oklahoma City rank as the NBA's only metro areas shy of 1.5 million people, according to the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. Yet those four NBA areas are all in the Western Conference.

Celtics, Jazz Unable To Gain Traction On Gordon Hayward Sign-And-Trade

Jul 6, 2017 10:57 PM

The Boston Celtics and Utah Jazz have been unable to find traction on a Gordon Hayward sign-and-trade.

Boston needs to clear cap space in order to sign Hayward outright and have been engaged with teams across the NBA on Jae Crowder, Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart.

There were reports that Crowder could be traded to the Jazz.

Because Hayward already agreed to sign with the Celtics and they could easily fit him into space by trading one of the aforementioned players, Utah would have to send another asset with Hayward to acquire Crowder.
