Grizz Sign Dickerson

Oct 31, 2001 1:42 AM

The Sporting News reports that the Memphis Grizzlies have signed shooting guard Michael Dickerson to a contract extension.  Dickerson is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, and would have been a free agent at the end of the season if he didn't sign a contract by October 31.  Earlier reports suggested his contract would be similar to that signed by teammate Jason Williams.

Country Hits IR

Oct 30, 2001 2:06 AM

Must be the food down there.  No sooner do the Grizzlies appear to be healthy to start the season, than they put Bryant Reeves on the injured list.

Reeves has a history of back injuries, and had some problems through training camp, so his placement on IR is probably legitimate.  But it's an expensive way for a team to spend $11.56 million in a new market.

There's new hope in Memphis, even for the Grizzlies

Oct 27, 2001 11:08 AM

Shane Battier ain't nothing but a hound dog. Well, he's a Grizzly, at least until that nickname is changed.

The Vancouver Grizzlies are now the Memphis Grizzlies, in case you missed their Canada cameo. There aren't too many bears in Memphis, so the nickname has got to go.

It's the first time the NBA has been in Tennessee. And sometime this season, you might hear that the Hornets have left Charlotte, N.C., for Louisville to become the first NBA franchise in Kentucky. It's just another issue that the league is having to deal with. The reality is that being an NBA franchise isn't what it used to be.

And you thought it was weird having a team named the Jazz playing in Utah.

Grizz Looking at Jackson

Oct 26, 2001 1:41 AM

Ron Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports the Grizzlies are interested in signing veteran shooting guard Jimmy Jackson.  With Michael Dickerson out, the Grizz are relying on Nick Anderson to carry the load.  But even if he weren't injured, it's unlikely Anderson could carry a full starting load.  Last year he managed just 8 minutes per game, and during training camp he talked of retiring.

With such a gaping hole, Jackson looks like a natural fit.  Most of the summer Jackson has been saying he expects close to the $4.3 million mid-level exception.  But recently the 31-year old Jackson said he'd play for the minimum, which is about $840,000 for his years of service.  So much for strengthening his bargaining position.
