John Wall Using Doubters As Motivation During Surge

Nov 27, 2013 1:42 PM

John Wall has scored at least 30 points in three straight games, scoring 31 against the Los Angeles Lakers in the Washington Wizards' 116-111 win on Tuesday.

“I think I’m using what everybody said about me, that I'm not a top five point guard, that I’m not a top ten point guard,” Wall said, when asked about the motivation behind his inspired play. “My job is to go out there and not just prove it by scoring, but you get known as a point guard in this league by winning games. All that’s something I’m trying to do is lead this team and keep trying to win as many games as we can.”

“He’s playing out of his mind,” teammate Martell Webster said.

“I’ve been more consistent, just being who I am,” Wall said. “Playing the right way, taking good shots and if I’m making some more layups on the fastbreak, I’ll be a little better.

“It’s building more confidence for me, making me harder to guard. It’s making it easier for me to get to the paint and easier to run a pick and roll and find my teammates,” he said. “I just give a lot of credit to my big men, setting good screens and getting me open. A lot of teams are playing me back and I just got to be confident with my jump shot and being able to work on it like I am with my coaching staff, watching film, and doing the right things.”

Wall signed an $80 million extension this offseason.

“I think three games make a statement, but that doesn’t mean nothing when you got 60-something games left and you can go into a slump any day of the week,” Wall said. “So I’ll just keep doing the things I’ve been doing in practice and working on my game.”

Otto Porter Progressing In Rehab, Return Date Still Uncertain

Nov 24, 2013 9:50 PM

Otto Porter is doing more activities in his recovery from a left hip flexor, but the rookie forward still has an uncertain return status.

"I think each day he's getting closer," Randy Wittman said. "Now, when is that day going to be that he steps on the practice court, I still don't know. But he's doing more and more stuff individually."

Wittman and the Washington Wizards are still awaiting clearance for Porter.

"That's in somebody else's hands before the OK is given," Wittman said regarding Porter's return. "I think it's getting closer as I said last night with Chris [Singleton]. I think Chris' may be a little farther along than Otto, even. Hopefully we can get those two guys on the practice floor. It's going to take a little time. They've missed about three months of not doing a whole lot."

Porter has missed time in his first season with the Wizards ever since suffering the hip injury early in training camp.

Nene Discouraged By Wizards' Mindset, 'Getting Tired Of This'

Nov 14, 2013 2:24 AM

The Washington Wizards fell to the Spurs in San Antonio, 92-79, on Wednesday, and Nene was highly discouraged by his team's play and cited a lack of selfless play.

“They kicked our butts in the most classy way — playing the right way,” Nene said, fuming following the clinical destruction of the Wizards by the selfless Spurs. “It’s crazy, that’s what makes me mad. Our young guys think they’re so smart. But if I was young, I would watch video of that game for one week to see if I could learn something, because the way they play is how you’re supposed to play.

“They not talented as us,” Nene continued. “They have great players, a great team, but the way they execute things, the way they cut, the way they exploit weaknesses, swing the ball. They don’t think about stats. We still think about stats. Our young guys must take their heads out their butts and play the right way, because I’m getting tired of this.”

The Wizards' dynamic backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal combined for 33 points but shot just 14 for 38 from the field.

The Wizards fell to 2-6 and have lost their past 15 visits to San Antonio.
